AOR / Soft Rock aus der Italien, im Eigenvertrieb

Man mag über die „Sozialen Medien“, Youtube und Streaming sagen, was man will. Und vieles davon vermutlich zurecht. Aber: Immer wieder stolpere ich unverhofft über neue Musik, die ohne Algorithmen wohl nie den Weg in mein Gehör gefunden hätte. So auch das wundervolle „The Man With The Red Shoes“, das zweite Album des MIKE DELLA BELLA PROJECT. Und ja, ich kann davon kaum genug bekommen. Hier haben wir es für einmal nicht mit einem Rock, Metal, Thrash Album zu tun. Vielmehr widmet sich Mike dem West-Coast AOR und Soft Rock à la CHICAGO, CWF, manchmal TOTO, aber auch mit INCOGNITO oder ZERO 7 lässt sich das Werk wunderbar vergleichen.

Als ehemaliger Waldhornist in der Jugendmusik Dietikon habe ich seit jeher Freude an Bläsern in Pop- und Rock Musik (und Swing, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte), und „The Man With The Red Shoes“ spart nicht an pointiertem Einsatz selbiger. Dabei sind dies nicht Musiker „ab Konserve“, sondern die 504 HORNS, welche ihr können bereits anderen renommierten Musikern zur Verfügung stellten. Überhaupt konnte Mike einige illustre Gäste für sein Projekt gewinnen: Robbie LaBlanc (u.a. FIND ME), der einigen Songs seine Stimme leiht, Peter Friestedt oder Bill Champlin (CHICAGO und andere). Die Liste der Gäste ist lang, das Name-Dropping würde aber dem eigentlichen Fakt nicht gerecht: Die Songs sind allesamt allererste Sahne und tönen „International“. Perfekt arrangiert, perfekt eingespielt und klasse abgemischt.

Da macht „The Man With The Red Shoes“ von Anfang bis Ende Freude und grooved gediegen vor sich hin. Dabei gelingt es dem Projekt, immer wieder neue Akzente zu setzen. Und man merkt es dem Album kein Stück an, dass die Gastmusiker grösstenteils in ihren eigenen Studios ihre Beiträge aufgenommen und letztlich nach Rom gesendet haben, um aus den Teilen ein Grosses Ganzes zu machen. Neben Soft Rock / manchmal Acid Jazzigen Songs gibt es auch den einen oder andern Rocker auf dem Album.

Fazit

Mit „The Man With The Red Shoes“ ist dem MIKE DELLA BELLA PROJECT ein Überraschungs-Hit im etwas „angestaubten“ und Stiefmütterlich behandelten AOR / Soft Rock Bereich gelungen, das im Internationalen Vergleich weit vorne mitmischen kann. Es wäre Mike zu gönnen, wenn er mit seinem zweiten Album ein grösseres Interesse bekommen würde. Denn das wäre hochverdient!

You can say what you like about „social media“, YouTube and streaming. And much of it probably rightly so. But: time and again I stumble across new music that would probably never have found its way into my ears without algorithms. This includes the wonderful „The Man With The Red Shoes“, the second album by the MIKE DELLA BELLA PROJECT. And yes, I can hardly get enough of it. For once, this is not a rock, metal or thrash album. Instead, Mike devotes himself to West-Coast AOR and soft rock à la CHICAGO, CWF, sometimes TOTO, but the work can also be wonderfully compared with INCOGNITO or ZERO 7.

As a former French horn player in the youth band Jugendmusik Dietikon, I have always enjoyed horns in pop and rock music (and swing, but that’s another story), and „The Man With The Red Shoes“ doesn’t skimp on the trenchant use of them. These are not „canned“ musicians, but the 504 HORNS, who have already made their skills available to other renowned musicians. In fact, Mike was able to attract some illustrious guests for his project: Robbie LaBlanc (FIND ME, among others), who lends his voice to some of the songs, Peter Friestedt and Bill Champlin (CHICAGO and others). The list of guests is long, but name-dropping would not do justice to the actual fact: the songs are all top notch and sound „international“. Perfectly arranged, perfectly recorded and superbly mixed.

The Man With The Red Shoes“ is a joy from start to finish and grooves along solidly. The project always manages to set new accents. And you can’t tell from the album that the guest musicians mostly recorded their contributions in their own studios and ultimately sent them to Rome to make a big whole out of the parts. In addition to soft rock / sometimes acid jazz songs, there are also one or two rockers on the album.

Conclusion

With „The Man With The Red Shoes“, the MIKE DELLA BELLA PROJECT have succeeded in creating a surprise hit in the somewhat „dusty“ and neglected AOR / soft rock genre, which is well up there with its international peers. Mike would be well-deserving of greater interest in his second album. Because that would be well deserved!
