Wir schreiben das Jahr 2020. ILLUMISHADE betritt – zu einem denkbar schlechten Zeitpunkt – das musikalische Parkett mit ihrem Debut-Album „ECLYPTIC – Wake Of Shadows“. Nicht ganz unbemerkt, aber dank den Einschränkungen, die damals herrschten, ohne die Möglichkeit, das Album gross zu promoten oder Live zu spielen. Bereits auf dem Debut waren die Zutaten vielseitig und zeigten die Richtung, in welche sich ILLUMISHADE entwickeln würden. Aufmerksam wurde ich auf die Band – gegründet als „Abschlussarbeit“ der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste – damals über Youtube Vorschläge. Und einmal mehr bin ich dankbar darüber, dass YT mich so gut kennt. Während das Debut eine Art Konzeptalbum mit eigens entwickelter Parallelwelt war und sich bereits damals Genretechnisch vom Gros der Veröffentlichungen abhob, so hat mich die allererste Live-Performance der Truppe im Z7 sprichwörtlich weggeblasen. Die Songs wurden mit einer Reinheit und stimmlicher Gewalt dargeboten, die gerade nach der Corona-Zeit einer Offenbarung nah kam.
2024. Mittlerweile haben ILLUMISHADE mit Napalm Records ein starkes Label gefunden, und seit etwas mehr als einem Monat ist ihr zweiter Longplayer „Another Side Of Me“ auf dem Markt. Vor knapp einem Jahr wurde die Hörerschaft mit „ENEMY“ langsam auf die neue Ära eingestimmt, und mit jeder neuen Single steigerte sich die Vorfreude. Dabei war erkennbar, dass ILLUMISHADE zwar ihrem Stil treu bleiben, das Songwriting doch arg dazugewonnen hatte. Dabei versucht der Fünfer nicht, eingetretenen Pfaden zu folgen sondern kreiert etwas eigenes, neues. Das progressive Element ist fast allgegenwärtig, gepaart mit viel Modern (Symphonic) Metal, ein wenig Alternativ Metal und das ganze Vermengt mit der Eingängigkeit von Disney. „Cloudreader“ oder „Fairytale“ (ja, der Name ist Programm) sind bei weitem nicht der einzige Song, der sich gut als Abspann zu einem Disney Klassiker machen würde. Und das ist keinesfalls despektierlich gemeint, denn wer kennt sie nicht, die alten Disney Songs oder die modernen Klassiker von Elton John oder Phil Collins, die allesamt eingängige und doch wohlarrangierte Lieder sind?
Eine der grossen Stärken von ILLUMISHADE. Denn während es im Hintergrund nur so vor vertrackten Rhythmen, Harmoniebögen und erdig-brachialen Riffs strotzt, halten die sphären- und elfenhaften Synthesizer/Orchesterarrangements und Fabiennes gleichzeitig mächtige und doch filigrane Stimme dagegen mit eingängigen Melodien. Hell und Dunkel. Hart und Sanft. Chaos und Ordnung. Nicht nur Albumcover und Bandname zelebrieren diese Gegensätze. Auch die Musik von ILLUMISHADE ist geprägt von gegensätzlichen Elementen, die sich aber nie bekämpfen, sondern gemeinsam gestärkt als Ganzes funktionieren.
Mit „TWILY“ folgt ein eher „experimenteller“ Song, der auch mit Anleihen aus Pop spielt, um dann in das gewohnt ILLUMISHADE’sche Gewand zu schlüpfen. Und irgendwann folgt dann auch das angekündigte „Verliebt“. Braucht es einen schweizerdeutschen Song auf einem solchen Album? Ich bin da wohl etwas voreingenommen. Habe ich mich kürzlich gerade erst geoutet, dass Schweizer Musik lange Zeit nicht auf meiner Speisekarte stand. Mit Schweizerdeutscher Musik ist es noch schlimmer. Ausser „Gmües“ von PATENT OCHSNER und „Jakarta oder Bern“ von SPIEGELBILD ist in meinem Plattenschrank gähnende Mundart-Leere. Dementsprechend skeptisch war ich gegenüber „Verliebt“. Aber… der Song funktioniert. Wunderschön gespielt von Coen Janssen von EPICA und emotional gesungen ein passender Abschluss zu einem sensationellen Album.
Fazit
Nun, alles was gesagt werden musste, wurde gesagt. Für mich ein wirklich tolles, in sich stimmiges Album, kurzweilig trotz 60 Minuten Spielzeit, mit vielen Überraschungen und noch mehr, was es zu entdecken gilt. Ich freue mich auf mehr.

The year is 2020 and ILLUMISHADE is entering the musical arena – at the worst possible time – with their debut album „ECLYPTIC – Wake Of Shadows“. Not entirely unnoticed, but thanks to the restrictions in place at the time, without the opportunity to promote the album in a big way or play it live. The ingredients on the debut were already diverse and showed the direction in which ILLUMISHADE would develop. I became aware of the band – founded as a „final project“ of the Zurich University of the Arts – at the time via YouTube suggestions. And once again I’m grateful that YT knows me so well. While the debut was a kind of concept album with a specially developed parallel world and already stood out from the majority of releases in terms of genre back then, the band’s very first live performance at Z7 literally blew me away. The songs were performed with a purity and vocal power that came close to a revelation, especially after the coronavirus period.
2024: ILLUMISHADE have now found a strong label in Napalm Records, and their second longplayer „Another Side Of Me“ has been on the market for just over a month. Almost a year ago, „ENEMY“ slowly got listeners in the mood for the new era, and the anticipation grew with each new single. It was recognisable that ILLUMISHADE had remained true to their style, but that the songwriting had gained a lot. The five-piece don’t try to follow well-trodden paths but create something new and unique. The progressive element is almost omnipresent, paired with a lot of modern (symphonic) metal, a little alternative metal and the whole thing mixed with the catchiness of Disney. „Cloudreader“ or „Fairytale“ (yes, the name says it all) are by no means the only songs that would work well as the end credits to a Disney classic. And that is in no way meant disrespectfully, because who doesn’t know the old Disney songs or the modern classics by Elton John or Phil Collins, all of which are catchy yet well-arranged songs?
One of the great strengths of ILLUMISHADE. While the background is bursting with intricate rhythms, harmonic arcs and earthy, brute riffs, the spherical and elfish synthesiser/orchestral arrangements and Fabienne’s simultaneously powerful yet delicate voice hold their own with catchy melodies. Light and dark. Hard and soft. Chaos and order. It’s not just the album cover and band name that celebrate these contrasts. ILLUMISHADE’s music is also characterised by contrasting elements that never fight each other, but work together as a stronger whole.
„TWILY“ is a more „experimental“ song that also plays with pop influences before slipping into the usual ILLUMISHADE guise. And at some point, the announced „Verliebt“ follows. Do you need a Swiss-German song on an album like this? I’m probably a bit biased. I’ve only just come out and admitted that Swiss music wasn’t on my menu for a long time. It’s even worse with Swiss-German music. Apart from „Gmües“ by PATENT OCHSNER and „Jakarta oder Bern“ by SPIEGELBILD, my record cabinet is a yawning dialect void. Accordingly, I was sceptical about „Verliebt“. But… the song works. Beautifully played by Coen Janssen from EPICA and emotionally sung, it’s a fitting conclusion to a sensational album.
Conclusion
Well, everything that needed to be said has been said. For me, a really great, coherent album, entertaining despite its 60-minute playing time, with lots of surprises and even more to discover. I’m looking forward to more.
