APRIL ART – „Pokerface“ bläst dich weg!!!

Ja, ich mag „female fronted“ nicht – als Genre-Bezeichnung oder Funktionsprinzip – aber Bands mit Frauen am Mikro sind da was ganz anderes. APRIL ART zum Beispiel!

Wenn eine Band Angebote von Labeln hat und sich trotzdem entscheidet, ihr Album unter eigener Ägide und Verantwortung zu machen und auf die Welt loszulassen – dann hat die Band entweder „gojones“ oder sie weiss einfach, dass sie so gut ist, dass die Fans sie auch ohne Label finden. Bei APRIL ART dürfte Zweiteres überwiegen.

Modern Metal aus Deutschland zuhause bei sich selbst.

Was ich auch nicht besonders mag, ist rot – besonders rotes Licht, an Konzerten, im Fotograben. Das gibt verkackte Bilder und die will niemand sehen – also liebe Band; rot ist voll in Ordnung, ausser beim Bühnenlicht!
Nachdem wir das geklärt haben, konzentriere ich mich mal auf Band und Musik. Band ist Lisa-Marie Watz – die „fronted“ female, Chris Bunnell an einer gar nicht mal sooo schlechten Gitarre, Ben Juelg ist zuständig für die Batteria und Julian Schuetze am Bass liefert das stabile Fundament. Die Truppe stammt aus Giessen im Norden von Frankfurt am Main.
Die Truppe besteht seit 2014, ihr Höhenflug begann vor der Pandemie, und geht jetzt ungebremst weiter. . Diesen Sommer spielten sie bereits verschiedene Festivals – vor kurzer Zeit das ROCKHARZ und ab September geht es dann auf eine Headlinertour durch Deutschland. APRIL ART sind definitiv heisser Scheiss – leider geil!
Musikalisch bietet die Band einen Sound, den man irgendwo im Bermudadreieck zwischen Rock, Metal und Post Hardcore anordnen kann – sie selber ordnen sich dem Modern Metal zu. Diese Bezeichnung mag ich – sie erlaubt eine gewisse musikalische Freiheit. So treffen melodische und mehrstimmige Gesangpart auf hammerharte Doubleblasts und Breakdowns. Die Gitarrenriffs sollen dir so richtig fett um die Ohren fliegen und der Bass darf dir ruhig die Eingeweide umstülpen. Natürlich lebt der Sound auch von der charismatischen und Stimme von Lisa-Marie Walz – er ist jedoch vor allem das Produkt einer eingespielten Band, die harmoniert und auf Augenhöhe zusammenarbeitet.

Die Stimme der Frontfrau klingt mal wie eine heftige Popröhre – jawohl das gibt es – über weite Strecken wie die der guten DORO PESCH – allerdings eigenständig und wandelbarer. Es ist besonders der Mix zwischen Rock, Metal und Rap/HipHop-Attitüde, welcher die Stimmgewalt der Sängerin auf ein eigenes Level hebt – grosse Klasse!
Ebenso grossartig ist Gitarrero Chris Bunnell. Meiner Meinung nach spielen ja die geilsten Gitarristen eher im Rock denn im Metal – die Herren Loomis und Amott mal ausgenommen. Somit wäre Bunnell dort ebenfalls mehr als gut aufgehoben – der Mann ist schlicht eine Instanz – er kann fette Riffs ebenso wie geile Soli.

Jubeln wir doch gleich weiter; Drummer Ben Juelg hat seine Hände und Füsse extrem im Griff, hämmert die Fälle der Bassdrums mit höchster Präzision und Druck raus, Basser Julian Schuetze ist nicht nur druckvoll, sondern auch wandelbar. Genial, wie er bei „The Sky Is The Limit“ einen Bass spielt, der wie aus einer anderen Welt klingt – wann haben Bässe das letzte Mal so geklungen?

Uns liegt die „Deluxe“-Version mit 15 Tracks vor, dort drauf sind die 3 zusätzlichen Songs „Try“, „Leave It Behind“ und „Headline“. Einige Songs wurden schon vorab veröffentlicht – einerseits der Titeltrack „Pokerface“, das offizielle Musikvideo „Headline“ oder das Video zu „Rising High“. Eingestreut in das Album finden sich drei „Interludes“, also Zwischenspiele oder Übergangsstücke.

Ich habe mich gefragt, ob es bei einem 10-er-Album Nummern gibt, die man als Anspieltipps definieren könnte oder solche, die abfallen?
Klar, „POKERFACE“ und „The Sky Is The Limit“ haben mich weggeblasen. „Warrior“ ist jedoch auch spannend – quasi die Ballade auf dem Album – jawoll, die Band kann auch gesittet zumindest teilweise. Und hier klingt Frontfrau Lisa-Marie ein wenig wie eine Mischung aus DORO und MELISSA ETHERIDGE.
Mit „Superhero“ liefert die Band einen weiteren Hookliner, mit „Rising High“ dem Stomper vor dem Herrn. Also lassen wir das, das Album ist eine Zehn, ist der Hammer und hat keine Schwächen, auch wenn nicht alle Songs gleich stark reinhauen.

Fazit

Schade für euch, dass es noch so lange dauert, bis das Album rauskommt. Was braucht man, um Erfolg zu haben, die grossen Bühnen zu stürmen, geile Alben zu machen und Rezensenten wie mich zu überzeugen? Keine Ahnung – fragt APRIL ART! Das Material hat das Zeug zu meinem Album des Jahres in diesem Genre!

Kaufen? Was für eine behämmerte Frage !

If a band has offers from labels and still decides to make their album under their own aegis and responsibility and let it loose on the world – then the band either has „gojones“ or they simply know that they are so good that fans will find them even without a label. In the case of APRIL ART, the latter should prevail.

What I also don’t like very much is red – especially red light, at concerts, in the photo pit. It gives crappy pictures and nobody wants to see them – so dear band; red is totally fine, except for stage lights!
Now that we’ve cleared that up, I’ll concentrate on the band and the music. Band is Lisa-Marie Watz – the „fronted“ female, Chris Bunnell on a not sooo bad guitar, Ben Juelg is responsible for the Batteria and Julian Schuetze on bass provides the stable foundation. The troupe hails from Giessen in the north of Frankfurt am Main.
The troupe exists since 2014, their flight of fancy began before the pandemic, and now continues unchecked. . This summer they already played several festivals – a short time ago the ROCKHARZ and from September they will go on a headliner tour through Germany. APRIL ART are definitely hot shit – unfortunately awesome!
Musically the band offers a sound that can be placed somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle between Rock, Metal and Post Hardcore – they classify themselves as Modern Metal. I like this designation – it allows a certain musical freedom. So melodic and polyphonic vocals meet hammer-hard doubleblasts and breakdowns. The guitar riffs are supposed to fly around your ears and the bass may turn your guts inside out. Of course, the sound also lives from the charismatic voice of Lisa-Marie Walz – but it is above all the product of a well-rehearsed band that harmonizes and works together at eye level.

The voice of the front woman sounds sometimes like a fierce pop tube – yes there is – over long stretches like that of the good DORO PESCH – but independent and more changeable. It is especially the mix between rock, metal and rap / hip hop attitude, which raises the vocal power of the singer on its own level – great class!
Ebenso great is guitarist Chris Bunnell. In my opinion, the coolest guitarists play more in rock than in metal – Messrs. Loomis and Amott excluded. So Bunnell would be more than in good hands there as well – the man is simply an authority – he can play fat riffs as well as awesome solos.

Let’s cheer right on; drummer Ben Juelg has his hands and feet extremely under control, hammers out the cases of the bass drums with the highest precision and pressure, bassist Julian Schuetze is not only punchy, but also changeable. Ingenious how he plays a bass on „The Sky Is The Limit“ that sounds like from another world – when was the last time basses sounded like that?

We have the „Deluxe“ version with 15 tracks, on there are the 3 additional songs „Try“, „Leave It Behind“ and „Headline“. Some songs were already released in advance – on the one hand the title track „Pokerface“, the official music video „Headline“ or the video for „Rising High“. Interspersed throughout the album are three „interludes,“ or transitional pieces.

I was wondering, on a 10-song album, are there any numbers that could be defined as play-alongs or ones that fall off?
Clearly, „POKERFACE“ and „The Sky Is The Limit“ blew me away. „Warrior“ is however also exciting – quasi the ballad on the album – yep, the band can also gesittet at least in part. And here frontwoman Lisa-Marie sounds a bit like a mixture of DORO and MELISSA ETHERIDGE.
With „Superhero“ the band delivers another hookliner, with „Rising High“ the stomper before the Lord. So let’s leave that, the album is a ten, is the hammer and has no weaknesses, even if not all songs equally strong smash.

It’s a shame for you that it’s still taking so long for the album to come out. What does it take to be successful, storm the big stages, make awesome albums and convince reviewers like me? No idea – ask APRIL ART! The material has what it takes to be my album of the year in this genre!

Buy it? What a stupid question !
