VOLBEAT – „Servant Of The Mind“
Wer genau Diener des Verstandes war, als das Konzept zum achten Studioalbum der Dänen von VOLBEAT geboren worden war, bleibe einmal dahingestellt…

…was man aber definitiv sagen kann – bei Michael Poulsen und Kollegen kriegt man ordentlich was fürs Geld. Ganze 18 Titel haben Poulsen (Gesang und Gitarre), Rob Caggiano (Gitarre), Kaspar Boye Larsen (Bass) und Jon Larsen (Schlagzeug) auf die Deluxe-Version ihres neuen Albums gepresst. Auf der „normalen“ Variante sind es immer noch 13 Tracks.
Im Vorfeld der Veröffentlichung wurden die Fans laufend mit neuen Videos zu einzelnen Tracks heiss gemacht. Wenn ich mir diese Videos vor Augen führe, dann habe ich mich gefragt, ob daraus ein „rundes“ Album werden kann – so unterschiedlich waren die einzelnen Tracks.
Es fällt mir ja nicht schwer zu bekennen, dass ich VOLBEAT mag, sehr sogar. Und das nicht, weil ich vor einigen Jahren den extrem sympathischen Fronter Michael Poulsen am GREENFIELD OPENAIR interviewen durfte. VOLBEAT sind für mich „die härteste Patyband der Welt“ – und Poulsen hat das als Kompliment genommen. Ohne Zweifel, VOLBEAT unterhalten und wollen das auch. Die Dänen sind nicht dafür bekannt, dass sie musikalische Exzesse produzieren oder in ihren Texten intellektuelle Schlachten schlagen.
Was sie aber sehr wohl und sehr gekonnt schaffen; vielfältige Musik zu schreiben und diese mit enormer Live-Präsenz vor einem ebenso vielfältigen Publikum zu präsentieren. Die Mischung zwischen Teenies mit Vater, Rockabilly-Girls mit Pettycoat oder Kutten tragenden Metalheads – VOLBEAT habne für beinahe jeden Geschmack etwas zu bieten. Spiegelt sich das auch im aktuellen Album wieder?
Eigentlich müsste die CD mit dem zweiten Track beginnen, um der Geschichte der Dänen gerecht zu werden. „Wait A Minute My Girl“ ist Rockabilly vom Feinsten inklusive Piano und Saxophon. Und dem genialen Video oben!
Wer nach diesem Song nicht hellwach ist, hat definitiv ein Problem mit seinem Stoffwechsel.
Die Dänen haben sich für „Temple Of Ekur“ als Opener entschieden – passt auch und ist das, was ich eine „typische“ VOLBEAT-Rocknummer nennen würde. Das bekannte Riffing, Poulsens Stimme und die eingängige Melodie, welche einen sofort mitnimmt. Diesen Song hören und man ist zuhause angekommen. Das meine ich natürlich bildlich, also angekommen im neuen Album.
Spannend; „Shotgun Blues“. Hier liefern die Jungs ein Metalbrett in der Cowboy Tradition von Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies. Geht straight ahead, ohne Schnörkel, powervoll – passt! Und, es gibt den Song in einer zweiten Version. Kein Geringerer als JUNGLE ROT Fronter Dave Matrise ist growlend mit von der Partie. Damit schliesst sich der Kreis – zumindest für Poulsen, war er doch vor der Gründung von VOLBEAT Sängerund Gitarrist der Death Metal Combo DOMINUS.
Eine der sanfteren Tracks, die wiederum Poulsens Stimme in den Vordergrund hebt, ist „Dagen Før“ mit Stine Bramsen. Who the fuck is Stine Bramsen? Bramsen wurde bekannt als Frontfrau der dänischen ALPHABEAT, einer Pop-Rock-Band, welche von 2004 bis etwa 2013 unterwegs war und 2019 ein fulminantes Comeback feierte. Entsprechend poppig ist der Track – auch das passt bei VOLBEAT in den Range.
Denselben Song gibt es noch in einer „Michael Vox Version“, wobei ich nicht herausgefunden habe, was es mit Michael Vox hier auf sich hat. Falls der geneigte Leser mich hier erhellen kann – danke!
Einer der fünf Tracks, welcher nur auf der Deluxe-Version drauf ist, ist „Don’t Tread On Me„. Das Cover des METALLICA-Songs, haben VOLBEAT zum Album „Metallica Blacklist“ beigesteuert, der Hommage an das „Black Album“, welches dieses Jahr dreissig Jahre alt geworden ist.
Was gibt es über die Songs noch zusagen? Vielleicht, dass es keine schwachen Songs gibt? Oder dass sie alle Teile eines Puzzle sind, das VOLBEAT 2021 darstellt und das wahrscheinlich einige Fans versöhnen kann, welche von „Rewind, Replay, Rebound“ nicht beglückt waren? Oder eben, dass sie unterschiedlich und vielfältig sind?
Fazit
„Servant Of The Mind“ ist bestimmt nicht das beste Album von VOLBEAT, da stehen „Beyond Hell/Above Heaven“ oder „Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie“ definitiv vor der Sonne. Nichts desto trotz gehört die Scheibe nicht nur in die Sammlung von Fans, sondern von jedem Liebhaber gut gemachter, abwechslungsreicher Musik, welche verschiedenste Genres abdeckt und trotzdem eine kompakte Einheit bildet. Empfehlung? Zwei kaufen und eine zu Weihnachten verschenken!

Who exactly was the servant of the mind when the concept for the eighth studio album of the Danes of VOLBEAT was born, remains to be seen…
…but one thing you can definitely say – with Michael Poulsen and colleagues you get a lot for your money. Poulsen (vocals and guitar), Rob Caggiano (guitar), Kaspar Boye Larsen (bass) and Jon Larsen (drums) have pressed 18 tracks onto the deluxe version of their new album. On the „normal“ version there are still 13 tracks.
In the run-up to the release, the fans were constantly made hot with new videos for individual tracks. When I think about these videos, I wondered whether it could become a „round“ album – the individual tracks were so different.
It’s not hard for me to admit that I like VOLBEAT, very much in fact. And not because I was allowed to interview the extremely likeable frontman Michael Poulsen at the GREENFIELD OPENAIR a few years ago. For me, VOLBEAT are „the hardest paty band in the world“ – and Poulsen took that as a compliment. Without a doubt, VOLBEAT entertain and want to do so. The Danes are not known for producing musical excesses or fighting intellectual battles in their lyrics.
But what they do manage to do very well and very skilfully; write diverse music and present it with enormous live presence to an equally diverse audience. The mixture between teenies with fathers, rockabilly girls with petty coats or metalheads wearing frocks – VOLBEAT have something to offer for almost every taste. Is this also reflected in the current album?
Actually, the CD should start with the second track to do justice to the Danes‘ story. „Wait A Minute My Girl“ is rockabilly at its best including piano and saxophone. And the ingenious video above!
Whoever is not wide awake after this song definitely has a problem with his metabolism.
The Danes have chosen „Temple Of Ekur“ as opener – also fits and is what I would call a „typical“ VOLBEAT rock number. The familiar riffing, Poulsen’s voice and the catchy melody, which takes you away immediately. Listen to this song and you’ve arrived home. I mean that figuratively, of course, arrived in the new album.
Suspenseful; „Shotgun Blues“. Here the guys deliver a metal board in the cowboy tradition of Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies. Goes straight ahead, no frills, powerful – fits! And, there is a second version of the song. None other than JUNGLE ROT fronter Dave Matrise is growling in the part. This closes the circle – at least for Poulsen, as he was singer and guitarist of the death metal combo DOMINUS before VOLBEAT was founded.
One of the softer tracks, which again brings Poulsen’s voice to the fore, is „Dagen Før“ with Stine Bramsen. Who the fuck is Stine Bramsen? Bramsen became known as the frontwoman of the Danish ALPHABEAT, a pop-rock band that was on the road from 2004 to around 2013 and celebrated a brilliant comeback in 2019. The track is correspondingly poppy – which also fits in with VOLBEAT in the Range.
The same song is also available in a „Michael Vox version“, although I haven’t found out what Michael Vox is all about here. If the reader can enlighten me – thank you!
One of the five tracks, which is only on the deluxe version, is „Don’t Tread On Me„. The cover of the METALLICA song, VOLBEAT contributed to the album „Metallica Blacklist“, the homage to the „Black Album“, which turned thirty this year.
What else is there to say about the songs? Maybe that there are no weak songs? Or that they are all pieces of a puzzle that VOLBEAT 2021 represents and that can probably reconcile some fans who were not pleased by „Rewind, Replay, Rebound“? Or just that they are different and diverse?
conclusion
„Servant Of The Mind“ is definitely not VOLBEAT’s best album, „Beyond Hell/Above Heaven“ or „Seal The Deal & Let’s Boogie“ are definitely ahead of the sun. Nevertheless, the disc belongs not only in the collection of fans, but of every lover of well-made, varied music, which covers the most diverse genres and still forms a compact unit. Recommendation? Buy two and give one away for Christmas!
