THE NEW ROSES – „Attracted To Danger“ am 4.10.24

Zum dritten Mal liefern Timmy Rough und seine Kumpels ein Album ab, das direkt einen Hookliner fürs Radio liefert. Dieses Mal ist es „When You Fall In Love“ vom Album „Attracted To Danger“, das im Oktober über Napalm Records erscheinen soll.

Bereits das zweite Rockalbum innert weniger Tage, das der Frischknecht mit 10 Punkten bewertet? Hat’s dem ins wohlbekannte Hirn gesch…?
Nope, denn die Gründe liegen weiter auseinander, als dass es Alben und Bands aus demselben Genre vermuten lassen. FIGHTER V erfüllen meine Hoffnung darauf, dass es wieder einmal eine Schweizer Rockband gibt, die auf die grossen Bühnen gehört.
THE NEW ROSES hingegen sind für mich eine Rockband mit dem Herzen am rechten Fleck. Timmy Rough (vox, guitar), Norman Bites (guit), Dizzy Daniels (guit), Hardy (bass) und Urban Berz (drums) lieben, was sie tun.
Wenn ich ihren Sound höre, knallt es mich ziemlich wuchtig dahin, wo alles besser war. Zumindest der Rock der gloriosen Achtziger und Neunziger. Bei THE NEW ROSES finde ich all das, was den Rock damals ausmachte; Authentizität, Spielfreude, Rebellion und die Fähigkeiten, insbesondere den Gitarren das zu geben, was sie brauchen – Dreck und Wehmut!

Und „Attracted To Danger“? Hammer, einfach nur Hammer! Die ganz kritischen Rock-Puristen werden monieren, dass da nichts Neues drauf wäre, das alles schon einmal da gewesen wäre. Richtig – aber von welchem Sound kann man das nicht auch sagen? In unserer Welt sind alle möglichen Noten millionenfach gespielt worden, egal in welchem Genre. Neue Melodien gibt es schon gar nicht mehr, alles findet sich irgendwo. Darum kann es aber nicht gehen. Worum denn?
Man lese weiter oben; Authentizität, Spielfreude, etwas Rebellion und vor allem ein grosses Herz. THE NEW ROSES liefern das ab, genau das. Bei jedem Song fühle ich mich sofort zuhause.
Od das die Powerballade „Hold Me Up“ ist, die er gemeinsam mit Gill Montgomery, Gitarristin und Sängerin von THE AMORETTES darbietet oder das Brett „Whiskey In The Backseat“, das Cover „Rockin‘ In The Free World“ von NEIL YOUNG/CRAZYHORSE. Mal sind die Songs beinahe wie Countrysongs, manchmal hart an der Grenze zum Metal – das Herz ist immer Rock. Die Gitarrenriffs sind knackig, die Soli gandenlos – etwa beim Titeltrack „Attracted To Danger“. Der Rock der Wiesbadener Band ist klassisch und bedient viele Sehnsüchte, viel Romantik auch – etwa beim obern erwähnten „When You Fall In Love“ oder „Natural Born Vagabonds“. Was der Vollständigkeit halber noch angefügt werden sollte; das Album ist insgesamt härter als die Vorgänger.

Fazit

Die Jungs von THE NEW ROSES sind keine Rockrebellen im klassischen Sinn mehr, sie fallen nicht mit Harleys über Provinzstädte her und haben wahrscheinlich auch keine Peacemaker im Hosenbund. Aber ihre Songs stillen genau diese Sehnsüchte nach Freiheit, nach Rebellion, nach einem zumindest zeitweisen Ausstieg aus einem Alltag, der uns alle mehr oder weniger festhält. „Attracted To Danger“ ist ein grandioses, rundes Album, das in keiner Rocksammlung fehlen sollte – kaufen!

For the third time, Timmy Rough and his mates are delivering an album that provides a direct hookliner for the radio. This time it’s ‘When You Fall In Love’ from the album ‘Attracted To Danger’, which is due to be released in October via Napalm Records.

This is the second rock album within a few days that Frischknecht has given 10 points? Has it got into his well-known brain?

Nope, because the reasons are further apart than albums and bands from the same genre would suggest. FIGHTER V fulfil my hope that there will once again be a Swiss rock band that belongs on the big stages.

THE WILD ROSES, on the other hand, are a rock band with their heart in the right place. Timmy Rough (vox, guitar), Norman Bites (guit), Dizzy Daniels (guit), Hardy (bass) and Urban Berz (drums) love what they do.
When I listen to their sound, I get a pretty powerful blast to where everything was better. At least the rock of the glorious eighties and nineties. With THE NEW ROSES, I find everything that characterised rock back then; authenticity, joy of playing, rebellion and the ability to give the guitars in particular what they need – dirt and melancholy! 
And ‘Attracted To Danger’? Awesome, just awesome! The very critical rock purists will criticise that there’s nothing new on it, that it’s all been there before. True – but what sound can’t you say that about? In our world, all kinds of notes have been played millions of times, regardless of the genre. There are no longer any new melodies, everything can be found somewhere. But that can’t be the point. What is it about?

Read above; authenticity, joy of playing, a bit of rebellion and above all a big heart. THE NEW ROSES deliver exactly that. I immediately feel at home with every song.

Whether it’s the power ballad ‘Hold Me Up’, which he performs together with Gill Montgomery, guitarist and singer from THE AMORETTES, or the board ‘Whiskey In The Backseat’, the cover „Rockin In The Free World“ of NEIL YOUNG/CRAZYHORSE. Sometimes the songs are almost like country songs, sometimes hard on the edge of metal – the heart is always rock. The guitar riffs are crunchy, the solos are gangless – for example on the title track ‘Attracted To Danger’. The Wiesbaden band’s rock is classic and fulfils many longings, including a lot of romance – for example in the aforementioned ‘When You Fall In Love’ or ‘Natural Born Vagabonds’. What should be added for completeness; the album is altogether heavier than its predecessors.

Conclusion

The guys from THE NEW ROSES are no longer rock rebels in the classic sense, they don’t attack provincial towns on Harleys and probably don’t have any peacemakers in their waistbands either. But their songs satisfy precisely this longing for freedom, for rebellion, for an at least temporary escape from an everyday life that more or less holds us all down. ‘Attracted To Danger’ is a magnificent, well-rounded album that should be part of every rock collection – buy it!
