Klar, dass ein Gitarrist wie SLASH, ein Sänger und Gitarrist wie MYLES KENNEDY und eine Band wie die CONSPIRATORS ihr Handwerk verstehen und jeder enttäuscht wäre, würden sie sich unter Wert verkaufen. Wenn also Gitarrist Saul Hudson, Sänger Myles Kennedy, Bassist Todd Kerns, Drummer Brent Fitz und Rhythmusgitarrist Frank Sidoris ein neues Machwerk liefern, dann hat das gefälligst gut zu sein, lieber noch überirdisch – gleichzeitig total neu und anders aber halt doch so, wie man es von ihnen mag. Ein Widerspruch? Nicht zwingend. SLASH feat. MYLES KENNEDY & THE CONSPIRATORS legen uns mit „4“ das – wie könnte es auch anders sein – vierte Album vor, das sie bisher zusammengeschustert haben. Vier Alben in zehn Jahren ist schon ziemlich fleissig, besonders für ein Side Project. Schliesslich spielte SLASH ja seit 5 Jahren wieder bei den GUNNERs und MYLES ist nach wie vor mit ALTER BRIDGE unterwegs.
Zur Beruhigung der Fans; die Scheibe ist so, wie man sie erwarten durfte – SMKC liefern nach wie vor Hardrock der hochklassigen Sorte, straight und schnörkellos. Das Album strahlt aus, wie es gemacht wurde. Während Corona einen Musiker nach dem anderen im Studio ausknockte – einzig Sidoris blieb verschont – hinderte das die Band nicht daran, das Album „live“ einzuspielen.
„Es hat etwas sehr Spontanes und Lebendiges an sich. Das liebe ich!“, sagt Slash über „4“. „Das ist wirklich der Hauptunterschied bei dieser Platte – wir haben sie mehr oder weniger live eingespielt, inklusive aller Fehler. Es ist der Sound von uns fünf, wie wir in einem Raum zusammen jammen.“
Herausgekommen sind zehn Tracks, die ganz unterschiedliche Geschmäcker bedienen. Für einmal braucht man der Aussage des Stargitarristen nichts hinzuzufügen.
„Vom gewaltigen, andächtigen „Whatever Gets You By“, über die slinky Grooves und Talkbox-getränkten Gitarrenhooks von „C’est La Vie“, dem hymnischen Anschwellen von „The Path Less Followed“, dem Cowbell-Boogie-Shake von „Actions Speak Louder Than Words“ und dem schmutzigen Aerosmith-esken Funk von „April Fool“, bis hin zur wütenden Attacke von „Call Off The Dogs“ – „4“ lässt niemals locker!“
Wo er Recht hat…
„4“ ist nicht nur das vierte Album, sondern klar auch das Beste, weil die Jungs sich nicht auf dem Erfolg ausgeruht haben, sondern neue Wege beschritten haben, beispielsweise bei „Spirit Of Love“, das den Hörer musikalisch zurück in den Ashram spediert. Oder mit dem Lovesong „Fill My World“ – keine Ode an eine Frau, sondern an SLASHs Hund. Ziemlich poprockig, vielleicht auch ein wenig AOR.
Eine fast schon epische Nummer gibt es ganz am Ende des Albums; „Fall Back To Earth“ wird getragen von der charismatischen Stimme Kennedys und einer Komposition, welche zwischen den Tonarten mäandert wie ein Bach in den Alpen, bevor er zum Strom wird, der sich talwärts wälzt. Unwiderstehlich, wie sich Kennedy’s Stimme und SLASHs Solo ineinander verweben.
Fazit
Für zehn burning headphones reicht es nicht, weil es dazu einfach noch den Überkracher brauchen würde, zu dem diese Band fähig wäre. Aber kein Jammern auf hohem Niveau – „4“ ist das bisher stärkste SMKC-Album, sollte dringend gekauft und in die ernstzunehmende Rocksammlung integriert werden!

Maybe it sounds really stupid, but sometimes you wish that even the big names would crash on their faces again, deliver something that you can rip off so beautifully…
Clearly, a guitarist like SLASH, a singer and guitarist like MYLES KENNEDY and a band like the CONSPIRATORS know their craft and everyone would be disappointed if they sold themselves short. So when guitarist Saul Hudson, singer Myles Kennedy, bassist Todd Kerns, drummer Brent Fitz and rhythm guitarist Frank Sidoris deliver a new work of art, it has to be good, or even better, supernatural – at the same time totally new and different, but just the way you like it from them. A contradiction? Not necessarily. SLASH feat. MYLES KENNEDY & THE CONSPIRATORS present us with „4“ the – how could it be otherwise – fourth album they have cobbled together so far. Four albums in ten years is pretty busy, especially for a side project. After all, SLASH has been playing with the GUNNERs again for five years and MYLES is still on the road with ALTER BRIDGE.
To reassure fans; the disc is as you might expect – SMKC still deliver hard rock of the high class variety, straight and no frills. The album radiates how it was made. While Corona knocked out one musician after another in the studio – only Sidoris was spared – that didn’t stop the band from recording the album „live“.
„There’s something very spontaneous and lively about it. I love that!“, Slash says of „4“. „That’s really the main difference with this record – we recorded it more or less live, mistakes included. It’s the sound of the five of us jamming in a room together.“
The result is ten tracks that cater to very different tastes. For once, nothing needs to be added to the star guitarist’s statement.
„From the massive, devotional „Whatever Gets You By“, to the slinky grooves and talkbox-soaked guitar hooks of „C’est La Vie“, the anthemic swell of „The Path Less Followed“, the cowbell-boogie shake of „Actions Speak Louder Than Words“ and the dirty Aerosmith-esque funk of „April Fool“,to the furious attack of „Call Off The Dogs“ – „4“never lets up! „
Where he’s right…
„4“ is not only the fourth album, but clearly also the best, because the guys haven’t rested on their success, but have broken new ground, for example with „Spirit Of Love“, which musically sped the listener back to the ashram. Or with the love song „Fill My World“ – not an ode to a woman, but to SLASH’s dog. Quite pop-rocky, maybe a little AOR.
An almost epic number comes at the very end of the album; „Fall Back To Earth“is carried by Kennedy’s charismatic voice and a composition that meanders between the keys like a stream in the Alps before it becomes a river rolling downhill. Irresistible how Kennedy’s voice and SLASH’s solo interweave.
Conclusion
It’s not enough for ten burning headphones, because it would simply take the over-the-top stuff this band is capable of. But no complaining on a high level – „4“ is the strongest SMKC album so far, should be bought urgently and integrated into the serious rock collection!
