„Carpe Diem“ – neues Album von SAXON

Logisch, die Fans werden die Scheibe bereits haben. Lohnt sich die Anschaffung auch für Freunde des NWOBHM an sich?

Biff Byford – Gesang, Paul Quinn – Gitarre, Nigel Glockler – Schlagzeug, Doug Scarratt – Gitarre und Nibbs Carter – Bass, das sind SAXON. Die Helden des New Wave Of British Heavy Metal prägen das Musikgeschehen seit 1979 – nicht viele Bands können eine dermassen lange Bühnenpräsenz vorweisen – und nach wie vor frisch und mit neuem Material aufwarten. Das Quintett schafft es immer noch, jede Bühne zu rocken und manche jüngere Band alt aussehen zu lassen.
Mittlerweile haben die Jungs 24! Studioalben herausgebracht, allein 1980 gleich zwei Kultscheiben; „Wheels Of Steel“ und „Strong Arm Of The Law“. Schaffen sie es, mit „Carpe Diem“ an die grossen Erfolge anzuknüpfen? Jene in ferner Vergangenheit oder an die Hammeralben „Sacrifice“ und „Battering Ram“? Meine Meinung dazu gibt es etwas weiter unten…
Produziert wurde „carpe Diem von Andy Sneap und Biff Byford / gemixt und gemastert von Andy Sneap, Die Gitarren wurden von Andy Sneap in den Backstage Recording Studios, Derbyshire (UK) aufgenommen. Die Vocals von Seb Byford in Big Silver Barn, York (UK); Drums aufgenommen von Jacky Lehmann (Audiosound) bei Velbyproductions in Grünenplan, Deutschland.

Klar, es ist nicht das beste SAXON Album. Die Band hat dermassen viel Kultmaterial veröffentlicht, dass es irgendwannn einfach nciht mehr möglich ist, nochmals draufzulegen. Es ist den Jungs auch in den letzten Jahren nochmals gelungen, Alben zu schreiben, die es schwer machen, sie zu toppen. „Battering Ram“ ist für mich eines der besten SAXON Alben überhaupt – das etwa mag „Carpe Diem“ nicht zu toppen. Und doch gehört es in den Kreis der zehn „must have“-Scheiben der Briten.
„Carpe Diem“ ist ein fast durchgehendes Brett. Bereits der Opener und Titelsong „Carpe Diem“ haut uns gewaltig was vor den Latz, „Supernova“ verlangt Drummer Nigel Glockler einiges ab – präzise double blasts können nicht nur Junge!

Sensationell auf dem ganzen Album ist die Gitarrenarbeit. Sollten die Finger am einen oder anderen Ort langsam etwas an Geschwindigkeit verlieren, Paul Quinn und Douglas Scaratt kompensieren das durch Soli, welche musikalisch überzeugen, welche auch langsameren Phrasen ihren Platz geben.
Was ich ja mag, sind die treibenden Tracks wie „Lady In Gray“. Man möchte sie immer etwas anschieben, voran stossen – und trotzdem die Power und Kompaktheit des Riffings nicht missen.
Eine ganz starke Nummer und mein persönlicher Favorit ist „Black Is The Night“ – fett, druckvoll und geprägt durch Biff Byfords charismatische und einzigartige Stimme. WAs für das gesamt Album gilt; es erlaubt sich keine Hänger, keine Schwächen. Ich feinde keinen Track, den ich lieber nicht auf dem Album gehabt hätte.

Fazit

„Carpe Diem“ ist selbsterklärend – SAXON haben jeden der Tage genutzt, als sie diese Songs schrieben mund einspielten. Das Album gehört zwingend ins Regal des SAXON Fans, aber auch all derer, welche richtig guten Heavy Metal sammeln – über die NWOBHM – Gemeinde hinaus. Unbedingt kaufen!

The heroes of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal have been shaping the music scene since 1979 – not many bands can boast such a long stage presence – and still come up with fresh and new material. The quintet still manages to rock every stage and make some younger bands look old.
In the meantime, the guys have released 24! In 1980 alone, they released two cult albums, „Wheels Of Steel“ and „Strong Arm Of The Law“. Will they be able to continue their great successes with „Carpe Diem“? Those of the distant past, or the hammer albums „Sacrifice“ and „Battering Ram“? You can find my opinion below…

Clearly, it’s not the best SAXON album. The band has released so much cult material that at some point it’s just not possible to add to it. The guys have managed to write albums again in the last few years that make it hard to top them. For me, „Battering Ram“ is one of the best SAXON albums ever – „Carpe Diem“, for example, cannot top it. And yet it belongs in the circle of the ten „must have“ records of the Brits.
„Carpe Diem“ is an almost continuous board. Already the opener and title track „Carpe Diem“ hits us hard, „Supernova“ demands a lot from drummer Nigel Glockler – not only boys can do precise double blasts!

Sensational throughout the album is the guitar work. Should the fingers slowly lose some speed in one place or another, Paul Quinn and Douglas Scaratt compensate with solos which are musically convincing, which also give slower phrases their place.
What I like are the driving tracks like „Lady In Gray“. You always want to push them a bit, push them forward – and still not miss the power and compactness of the riffing.
A very strong number and my personal favourite is „Black Is The Night“ – fat, powerful and characterised by Biff Byford’s charismatic and unique voice. Which is true for the whole album; it doesn’t allow itself any hang-ups, no weaknesses. I don’t host a track I would rather not have had on the album.

Conclusion

„Carpe Diem“ is self-explanatory – SAXON made the most of every one of the days they spent writing and recording these songs. This album belongs on the shelf of the SAXON fan, but also of all those who collect really good heavy metal – beyond the NWOBHM community. Definitely buy it!
