SABATON – „War To End All Wars“ erscheint heute
Es mutet gerade ziemlich schräg an, wenn in der aktuellen Situation ein Album diesen Namens angekündigt wird. SABATON können natürlich nichts für diese Situation…

Wer mich kennt, weiss, dass ich ein durchaus gespaltenes Verhältnis zu SABATON habe. Einerseits sind sie eine Band, die live absolut überzeugt und jede Bühne rocken kann. Sie packen das Publikum im „kleinen“ Club ebenso wie auf der Bühne eines W:O:A.
Andererseits ist die Band thematisch extrem festgelegt auf ihre historischen Themen und musikalisch nicht für enorme Abwechslung bekannt.
Joakim Brodén (Gesang, Keyboard), Pär Sundström (E-Bass,) Chris Rörland (Gitarre), Tommy Johansson (Gitarre) und Hannes Van Dahl (Schlagzeug) gehören aber eindeutig zur Speerspitze des Powermetal und schenken sich technisch nichts. Songwriting, Composing, Mastering – alles keine Fremdwörter für die Jungs, an ihren Alben arbeiten jeweils grosse Namen mit, insbesondere Peter Tägtgren, der den Sound der Band massgeblich beeinflusst.
Also, was meine ich mit „musikalisch nicht für enorme Abwechslung bekannt“? SABATON haben einen extrem typischen Sound , den man auf Anhieb erkennt – das Riffing, die Rhythmen und die meist mehrstimmigen Gesangsparts. Die meisten Songs sind episch und gekennzeichnet entweder im schnellen Powermetal- oder im stampfenden Marschtempo. Der Sound ist sehr kompakt und knackig, leider zu oft auch voraussehbar. Insgesamt würde ich „The War To End all Wars“ als düsterer und ein Stück weit härter beurteilen als frühere Werke. Immer wieder gibt es Kirschen auf der Torte – etwa das Gitarrensolo bei „Lady Of The Dark“. Da wäre auch noch „The Valley Of Death“ – das Brett auf der Scheibe. Etwas unerwartet und überraschend ist „Christmas Truth“. Es ist eine der wenigen Balladen von SABATON, Fronter Joakim liefert den Pianopart, Floor Jansen trägt ein Stück Gesang bei. Die Geschichte dahinter ist natürlich rührend; an der Westfront in Flandern gibt es 1914 eine unautorisierte Waffenruhe zwischen deutschen und britischen Truppen. Damit nicht genug, die Soldaten zweier Regimenter treffen sich im Niemandsland und feiern gemeinsam Weihnachten. Bei aller Idylle – am nächsten Tag ging der sinnlose Krieg auch an diesem Frontabschnitt mit unverminderter Härte weiter, und wahrscheinlich hat der eine oder andere einen Menschen getötet, mit dem er am Vorabend noch gefeiert hat. Krieg kennt letztlich immer nur Verlierer.
Fazit
Also, der grosse Knaller ist das Album nicht. Es ist auch nicht zu erwarten, dass die Schweden irgendwann etwas völlig Überraschendes abliefern werden. Nichts desottrotz; das Album wird den Fans gefallen, Tausende werden SABATON wieder zujubeln, wenn die Bühnen in Hallen und auf Openairs wieder bespielt werden. SABATON werden weiterhin eine Live-Institution sein, authentisch bleiben und die Massen begeistern.
Das Album darf man also durchaus kaufen!

Those who know me know that I have a very divided relationship with SABATON. On the one hand, they are a band that is absolutely convincing live and can rock any stage. They grab the audience in the „small“ club as well as on the stage of a W:O:A.
On the other hand, the band is thematically extremely fixed on their historical themes and musically not known for enormous variety.
Joakim Brodén (vocals, keyboard), Pär Sundström (electric bass,) Chris Rörland (guitar), Tommy Johansson (guitar) and Hannes Van Dahl (drums), however, clearly belong to the spearhead of powermetal and give nothing to each other technically. Songwriting, composing, mastering – these are not foreign words for the guys, big names work on their albums, especially Peter Tägtgren, who has a significant influence on the band’s sound.
So, what do I mean by „not known for enormous variety musically“? SABATON have an extremely typical sound , which is instantly recognisable – the riffing, the rhythms and the mostly polyphonic vocal parts. Most of the songs are epic and characterised either in a fast powermetal or in a stomping marching tempo. The sound is very compact and crisp, unfortunately too often also predictable. All in all, I would judge „The War To End all Wars“ as darker and a bit heavier than earlier works. Again and again there are cherries on the cake – for example the guitar solo in „Lady Of The Dark“. There’s also „The Valley Of Death“ – the album’s main track. Somewhat unexpected and surprising is „Christmas Truth“. It is one of the few ballads by SABATON, fronter Joakim delivers the piano part, Floor Jansen contributes a piece of vocals. The story behind it is of course touching; there is an unauthorised truce between German and British troops on the Western Front in Flanders in 1914. As if that were not enough, the soldiers of two regiments meet in no man’s land and celebrate Christmas together. For all the idyll – the next day, the senseless war continued with undiminished ferocity on this section of the front as well, and probably one or two of them killed someone with whom they had been celebrating the night before. In the end, war only knows losers.
Conclusion
Well, the album is not a big hit. It is also not to be expected that the Swedes will deliver something completely surprising at some point. Nevertheless, the fans will like the album, thousands will cheer for SABATON again when they play the stages in halls and at open airs. SABATON will continue to be a live institution, remain authentic and inspire the masses.
