REMEDY – „Something That Your Eyes Won’t See“
Ein Album wie eine Chimäre – Melodic Rock meets Hard Rock, und alles mit einem Hauch 80er

Manchmal braucht Musik etwas länger, bis sie das Ohr des Hörers erreicht. So geschehen beim Erstling „Something That Your Eyes Won’t See“ der Schweden REMEDY, welches bereits vor gut einem Jahr erschienen ist und vermutlich auch weiterhin an uns vorbei gezogen wäre, hätte der nordische Fünfer nicht bei Rocknews um einen Review angefragt. Da kann man natürlich nicht nein sagen, besonders wenn einem solche Songs ins Gehör gemeisselt werden. Und eins vorweg: Schon lange habe ich keine so toll gestaltete und umfangreiche Band-Bio mehr zu lesen bekommen. Ein Bonuspunkt dafür!
REMEDY hat sich Mitte 2020 gegründet. Wie bei vielen anderen Projekten mussten sich die Jungs neue Betätigungsfelder suchen, da das Touren und damit eine wichtige Einnahmequelle verloren ging. Nun hatten die Herren vor allem eins: Viel Zeit. Eins führte zum anderen, und so kam es, dass Robert Van Der Zwan (Vocals and Guitar), Roland ”Rolli” Forsman (Guitar), Jonas Öijvall (Keyboards), Jonas Dicklo (Bass) und Fredrik Karlberg (Drums) als REMEDY zusammentaten, um sich songwriterisch dem Hard Rock Sound der 80er anzunähern.
Das Album selbst beginnt selbstbewusst mit dem Melodic Rock Kracher „Living On The Edge“, der mit „I Wanna Have It All“ und „Marilyn“ dem klassischen 80er Hair-/Melodic Rock huldigt. Alle drei Songs haben sämtliche Ingredienzien, die es dazu braucht: Ein satter Refrain, gerade genügend Synthies, treibende Beats und cooles Riffing. Die anderen sieben Songs – respektive die Balladen mal ausgenommen – orientieren sich stilistisch mehr an den PRETTY MAIDS oder HOUSE OF LORDS aus den 2010ern aber auch die Post-1990 EUROPE kommen mir in den Sinn. Alles etwas dreckiger, roher und weniger Hook-getrieben. Auch hier hat es klasse Songs darunter, nicht alle jedoch können das Versprechen halten, das REMEDY mit den 3 Einstiegs-Songs gegeben hat, denn dafür folgt der Rest des Albums zu sehr einem ähnlichen Schema. Das soll aber nicht heissen, dass die Songs nicht gut sind. So manch eine andere Band würde sich wohl wünschen, auch nur einen Song des 10 Stücke umfassenden „Something That Your Eyes Won’t See“ auf ihrer Scheibe zu haben. Mich persönlich sprechen die „poppigeren“ Nummern am Anfang einfach mehr an. Mit „Sundays At Nine“ gibt es eine klassische Ballade, bei der das Wort „iPad“ für meine Begriffe ein paar mal zu oft vorkommt, „Thunder In The Dark“ ist ein Mid-Tempo-Rocker der WHITESNAKE vibes versprüht (zu „Slip Of The Tongue“ Zeiten) und „My Devil Within“ bekam ein sakrales Intro spendiert – das den Teufel aber nicht auf Abstand halten konnte und ordentlich Dampf macht und wieder ein wenig in die klassische Melodic Rock Schublade vordringt.
Fazit
Auch wenn bereits seit einem Jahr auf den Markt lohnt es sich, REMEDY für sich neu zu entdecken. Stilistisch etwas durchwachsen kann das andererseits aber genau wieder die nötige Spannung aufrechterhalten, um „Something That Your Eyes Won’t See“ von Anfang bis Ende durchzuhören. Meine Favoriten sind dabei ganz klar die mehr am Melodic Rock anbiedernden Songs. Bleibt zu hoffen, dass die Band auch jetzt, wo das Tourleben halbwegs wieder Fahrt aufnimmt, den Drang verspüren, weiterhin zusammen Musik zu machen. Mit dem Bonuspunkt für die Bio/Presskit gibt das satte 8 Punkte.

Sometimes music takes a little longer to reach the listener’s ear. This is what happened with the first album „Something That Your Eyes Won’t See“ by the Swedes REMEDY, which was released about a year ago and would probably have passed us by if the Nordic five-piece hadn’t asked Rocknews for a review. Of course you can’t say no, especially when songs like this are chiselled into your ears. And one thing in advance: It’s been a long time since I’ve read such a great and extensive band bio. Bonus point for that!
REMEDY was formed in the middle of 2020. As with many other projects, the guys had to look for new fields of activity, as touring and thus an important source of income was lost. Now the gentlemen had one thing above all: a lot of time. One thing led to another, and so it came about that Robert Van Der Zwan (vocals and guitar), Roland „Rolli“ Forsman (guitar), Jonas Öijvall (keyboards), Jonas Dicklo (bass) and Fredrik Karlberg (drums) joined forces as REMEDY to approach the songwriting of the hard rock sound of the 80s.
The album itself starts confidently with the melodic rock smash „Living On The Edge“, which pays homage to classic 80s hair/melodic rock with „I Wanna Have It All“ and „Marilyn“. All three songs have all the ingredients needed: a rich chorus, just enough synths, driving beats and cool riffing. The other seven songs – except for the ballads – are stylistically more like PRETTY MAIDS or HOUSE OF LORDS from the 2010s, but also post-1990 EUROPE come to mind. Everything a bit dirtier, rougher and less hook-driven. There are also great songs here, but not all of them can keep the promise REMEDY made with the 3 introductory songs, because the rest of the album follows too much of a similar pattern. But that doesn’t mean that the songs are not good. Many a band would probably wish to have even one song of the 10 track „Something That Your Eyes Won’t See“ on their disc. Personally, the „poppier“ numbers at the beginning simply appeal to me more. With „Sundays At Nine“ there is a classic ballad where the word „iPad“ appears a few times too often for my liking, „Thunder In The Dark“ is a mid-tempo rocker that exudes WHITESNAKE vibes (in „Slip Of The Tongue“ times) and „My Devil Within“ was given a sacral intro – which couldn’t keep the devil at bay though and makes a good head of steam and moves back into the classic melodic rock pigeonhole a bit.
Conclusion
Even though it’s already been on the market for a year, it’s worth rediscovering REMEDY for yourself. Stylistically a bit mixed, but on the other hand it can maintain the necessary tension to listen to „Something That Your Eyes Won’t See“ from beginning to end. My favourites are clearly the songs that lean more towards melodic rock. Let’s hope that now that touring is picking up again, the band will feel the urge to keep on playing.
