RAGE – es gibt noch Doppelalben – „Afterlifelines“
RAGE sind nach wie vor etwas vom Besten, was so richtiger Powermetal zu bieten hat. Am 29.03.24 veröffentlichen die deutschen ihre Doppel-LP „Afterlifelines“ voll auf die Zehn!

Der Albumtitel könnte direkt aus der Werbekampagne der Schweizerischen Post stammen – die beschriften ihre LKW’s seit einigen Jahren mit besonderen Wortkombinationen. RAGE machen das bei ihren neuen Scheiben ebenso, die erste CD heisst „Afterlifes“, die zweite „Lifelines“ . Und das Teil hat sehr ordentlich Dampf.
Klar, von Peavy Wagner und seinen Kumpels kam noch nie weichgespülter Sound. Auch wenn die Truppe langsam einige Jährchen auf dem Buckel hat – von Altersmilde ist da definitiv nichts zu spüren. Zum knallharten Sound kommt aber auch eine klare Botschaft: „Schon heute gibt es auf unserem Planeten ein dramatisches Artensterben, und ein Ende ist noch nicht abzusehen.“ Damit weist der Fronter auf das Aussterben von Orang Utan’s hin („Dead Man’s Eyes“) oder die Tausenden Tonnen Plastikmüll, welche unsere Gesellschaft in die Weltmeere kippt „Toxic Waves“. Die beiden Alben reihen sich nahtlos an „Resurrection Day“ an. Ging es im letzten ALbum um die Menschheitsgeschichte vom Jäger und Sammler hin zum sesshaften Ackerbauern, so beschreibt „Afterlifelines“ nicht nur die Fortführung, sondern gleich auch die Fiktion vom Untergang, vom Zusammenbruch aller Systeme. Und niemand mag ernsthaft sagen, dass wir da nicht auf gutem Weg wären.
Musikalisch ist es einmal mehr nicht erstaunlich, aber zumindest beeindruckend, dass das RAGE-Geballer von nur gerade drei Personen verursacht wird, Neben Peavy Wagner an Bass und Mikro hämmert Vassilios “Lucky” Maniatopoulos auf die Trommeln und Jean Bormann spielt eine geniale Gitarre. Was da an Power kommt, bringen andere Bands nicht mit deutlich mehr Personal auf die Bühne. Okay, hier sein ein kleiner Hinweis vermerkt; auf dem zweiten Silberling integriert die Band klassische Orchesterarrangements, allerdings stammen auch diese von lediglich einer Person, Keyboarder Marco Grasshoff liefert sie. Der Keyborder ist als Sänger von ANGELINC ebenso bekannt wie als Produzent.
Dass RAGE auch nach vierzig! Bühnenjahren musikalisch breit aufgestellt ist, zweigt sich einmal mehr deutlich. Eingestreute Growls finden sich ebenso wie Balladen oder Thrash-Bretter. So zeigen beide Opener „In The Beginning“ als auch „Cold Desire“ jeweils einen sanften Einstieg, der sich bald in bretthartes Material verwandelt. Aber auch vor Balladen fürchten sich die Powermetaller nicht, das zeigt „Dying To Live“.
Fazit
„Afterlifelines“ ist ein absolutes Hammeralbum und bisher das beste, das auf meinem Schreibtisch gelandet ist. RAGE garantieren seit vierzig Jahren für geilen Sound, für engagierte Mucke. Dieses Doppelalbum ist das Sahnehäubchen auf ihrem bisherigen musikalischen Schaffen! Richtig, richtig geil gemacht, Jungs!

The album title could have come straight from a Swiss Post advertising campaign – they have been labelling their lorries with special word combinations for several years now. RAGE do the same with their new discs, the first CD is called „Afterlifes“, the second „Lifelines“. And it’s got a lot of steam.
Of course, Peavy Wagner and his mates have never produced a soft sound. Even though the band is getting on in years, there’s definitely no sign of ageing. The hard-hitting sound is accompanied by a clear message: „There is already a dramatic extinction of species on our planet today, and there is no end in sight.“ The frontman is referring to the extinction of orangutans („Dead Man’s Eyes“) or the thousands of tonnes of plastic waste that our society is dumping into the world’s oceans („Toxic Waves“). The two albums follow on seamlessly from „Resurrection Day“. While the last album was about the history of mankind from hunter-gatherers to sedentary farmers, „Afterlifelines“ not only describes the continuation, but also the fiction of the downfall, the collapse of all systems. And nobody can seriously say that we are not on the right track.
Musically, it is once again not surprising, but at least impressive, that the RAGE banging is created by just three people. Alongside Peavy Wagner on bass and microphone, Vassilios „Lucky“ Maniatopoulos pounds the drums and Jean Bormann plays an ingenious guitar. The power that comes from this is something that other bands don’t bring to the stage with significantly more personnel. Okay, here’s a little hint: on the second disc, the band integrates classical orchestral arrangements, but these are also provided by just one person, keyboardist Marco Grasshoff. The keyboarder is as well known as the singer of ANGELINC as he is as a producer.
The fact that even after forty! years on stage, it is once again clear that RAGE is musically diverse. There are interspersed growls as well as ballads and thrash planks. Both openers „In The Beginning“ and „Cold Desire“, for example, have a gentle introduction that soon turns into hard-hitting material. But the power metallers are not afraid of ballads either, as „Dying To Live“ shows.
Conclusion
„Afterlifelines“ is an absolute hammer album and so far the best that has landed on my desk. RAGE have been guaranteeing great sound and committed music for forty years. This double album is the icing on the cake of their musical oeuvre to date! Really, really well done, guys!
