Im 16. Jahr ihres Bestehens bringen die progressiven Metaller aus Arkansas ihr fünftes Album auf den Markt. Die Band ist ein Phänomen, denn ihre Lineup-Wechsel haben immer nur den Drummer betroffen. So ist Mark Lierly der mittlerweile fünfte Drummer der Band. Möglicherweise ist es auch Teil einer Philosophie, dass die Band für jedes Album einen neuen Drummer sucht? Am E-Bass spielt Joseph D. Rowland, Devin Holt macht den Leadgitarristen, Gitarre und Gesang liefert Brett Campbell und Mark Lierly agiert als Drummer. Die Band setzt sich immer wieder mit der Wirkung unserer Gesellschaft auf den Menschen auseinander – auch dieses Mal geht es weitgehend um die psychische Gesundheit und deren Bezug zu den Entwicklungen auf dieser Welt.
„Es sind Vignetten, die die Geschichten von Menschen erzählen, die mit unzähligen Krankheiten des Geistes zu kämpfen haben. Es sind Krankheiten, die von der Welt, in der wir leben, vermittelt werden, und die Protagonisten sind die Symptome dieser Krankheit.“

Das Album selber besticht einmal mehr durch lange, für progressive Musik typische, Songs, deren sechs ausreichen, um ein fünfzigminütiges Album zu füllen. Die Musik? Melancholisch, nachdenklich, dem Thema angepasst. Von der Fachpresse wird die Band immer wieder einmal dem Doom zugeordnet, und zwar Doom im Sinne dessen, was BLACK SABBATH dereinst erfunden hat. Und ja, mit dem Track „With Desease“ zielen sie genau in diese Richtung; schwer, langsam und schleppend in der Konstruktion. Für einmal ist das genau jene musikalische Umsetzung psychischer Belastungen, die jedermann nachvollziehen kann. Ähnlich der Titeltrack, wenn auch insgesamt beinahe etwas „heller und hoffnungsfroher“.

Fazit

Mir gefällt das Album gut, es ist eine gelungene Synthese der Musik mit den schwierigen Inhalten – und beides braucht eine gewisse Auseinandersetzung. Wenn ich es nicht schon hätte, ich würde das Album kaufen!

In their 16th year of existence, the progressive metallers from Arkansas are releasing their fifth album. The band is a phenomenon, as their line-up changes have only ever affected the drummer. Mark Lierly is now the band’s fifth drummer. Perhaps it is also part of the band’s philosophy that they look for a new drummer for every album? Joseph D. Rowland plays electric bass, Devin Holt is the lead guitarist, Brett Campbell provides guitar and vocals and Mark Lierly is the drummer. The band repeatedly explores the impact of our society on people – this time, too, it’s largely about mental health and how it relates to developments in the world.
„These are vignettes that tell the stories of people struggling with a myriad of mental illnesses. They are illnesses mediated by the world we live in, and the protagonists are the symptoms of that illness.“

The album itself is once again characterised by long songs typical of progressive music, six of which are enough to fill a fifty-minute album. The music? Melancholic, thoughtful, adapted to the theme. The trade press repeatedly categorises the band as doom, and doom in the sense of what BLACK SABBATH once invented. And yes, with the track „With Desease“ they are aiming precisely in this direction; heavy, slow and sluggish in construction. For once, this is exactly the kind of musical realisation of psychological stress that everyone can relate to. The title track is similar, although almost a little „brighter and more hopeful“ overall.

Conclusion

I like the album, it’s a successful synthesis of music and difficult content – and both require a certain amount of dialogue. If I didn’t already have it, I would buy the album!
