Eine Band, die es seit den Achtzigern gibt und die es „nie über lokale Berühmtheit hinaus“ gebracht hat? Eine Band, die gerade ihr zweites Album getauft hat und so ungefähr zwei Shows im Jahr spielt? Was für ein schräges Ding ist das bitte?
Und dann spielen die Jungs noch Hardrock, der wie AC/DC klingt – oder so…

Aber alles zum Anfang – OVEN KANE sind deutlich mehr als eine AC/DC-Coverband oder -Kopie. Das würde weder Urs „Wabble“ Schiess gerecht, dem Sänger, der ziemlich nach Bon Scott klingt, noch den anderen Bandmitgliedern. Da wäre Sacha „Sash“ Leuenberger an der Gitarre, der Saitenarbeit unter Anderem bei THE BOSS HOSS geleistet hat. Der Junge hat extrem flexible, flinke Finger und kann Hochgeschwindigkeit ebenso wie jene grandiosen Soli, die langsamer, getragener sind, und bei denen Ton sauber auf Ton gesetzt wird. Er wird unterstützt vom Benjamin und Metalhead Siro Giger, ein Shredder vor dem Herrn, auf der Bühne beinahe etwas schüchtern – und trotzdem ein Gitarrero, der keine Gefangenen macht. Er spielt und singt auch beim Metalabrisskommando TERONATION.
Dann wäre da noch Drummer Chrigel Bosshard, der seine Sticks ehemals bei BONAPARTE traktiert hat und heute bei STEFFE LA CHEFFE seinen Job leistet – eine professionelle, hammerharte und hochpräzise Rhythmusmaschine im Hintergrund. Bleibt noch Marco „Blö“ Blöchlinger, der sich seine Sporen schon längst verdient hat und seine Dienste auch bei den COWBOYS FROM HELL zur Verfügung stellt.

Während ich mir die Scheibe, diese Notiz einer Rock’n’Roll-Karriere, wieder einmal zu Gemüte führe, realisiere ich gerade, dass Wabble’s Stimme eigentlich mindestens so stark nach Ozzy Osbourne klingt wie nach Bon Scott. Wie auch immer, das ist eine Rockstimme, die gleichzeitig auch Bluesqualitäten hat, auf die man nicht von Anfang an kommen würde. Ein grandioses Beispiel dafür ist „Scotch’n’Beer“, klingt gitarrenmässig bisschen nach ZZ TOPs „La Grange“, eine Southernrock-Nummer, die klar und ehrlich knallt.
Überhaupt, mit jedem Hören wird klar, welches die kreativen Köpfe dieser Band, dieser Musik sind. Neben Frontmann Urs Schiess am Mik ist das Leadgitarrist Sacha Leuenberger. „Sash“ kommt nicht nur mit seiner Technik dem „gleichnamigen“ Gunners-Gitarrero ziemlich nah, er ist es, der letztlich den Range des Albums über die Rock – Jahrzehnte stretcht. Beispiele gefällig? „Go Down“ ist eine klassische Hardrock-Breitseite im AC/DC-Stil. Bei „Shot Through The Night“ erinnert mich das Riffing und der leicht wimmernde Gitarrensound an TED NUGENT. „War“ knallt rein wie gewisse Nummern von DEF LEPPARD, „Friends“ hingegen holt eher die AOR-Generation ab, WHITESNAKE und Co. etwa.

Klar, man kann meine Bezüge vollständig anders sehen – was ich damit sagen will – die Band ist breit aufgestellt, kreativ und life eine absolute Wucht. Die Taufe dieses Albums haben sie in der St. Galler Grabenhalle zelebriert – obwohl das Album noch gar nicht erhältlich ist. Da wird es dann wohl noch eine Release Party geben müssen. Wobei da einiges zusammenspielen muss. Der Gitarrero muss gerade wieder einmal statt in Schweden in der Schweiz sein, Fronter Schiess auf Heimaturlaub von Schiff, Steffe La Cheffe muss ihrem Drummer frei geben, TERONATION müssen mal gerade nicht auf Krawall gebürstet sein und der Bassist sollte es sich auch noch irgendwie einrichten können. Wenn das geschieht – geht unbedingt hin, erlebt diese Band live! Denn was sie auf diesem Album an musikalität und Power andeuten, toppen sie auf der Bühne um ein Vielfaches. Wehe, wenn sie losgelassen.
Und bei all dem Können kann es sich die Truppe auch leisten, mal noch eine Disco-Rock Cover vom Pop Rock Altmeister ROD STEWART einfliessen zu lassen: da ya think I’m sexy? They are!

Fazit

Gute Musik hat drei Attribute – sie muss knallen, sie muss Spass machen und sie muss GUT sein. OVEN KANE zeigen mit „Outlet Of A Rock’n’Roll Career“, was eine Harke ist, wo der Rockhammer hängt. Zu schade einfach, dass man die Jungs kaum zu Gesicht bekommt.

A band that has been around since the eighties and has „never made it beyond local fame“? A band that has just christened its second album and plays about two shows a year? What kind of weird thing is that?
And then the guys play hard rock that sounds like AC/DC – or even straight covers of the Australians…

But let’s start at the beginning – OVEN KANE are much more than just an AC/DC cover band or copy. That wouldn’t do justice to Urs „Wabble“ Schiess, the singer, who sounds a lot like Bon Scott, or the other band members. There’s Sacha „Sash“ Leuenberger on guitar, who has done string work with THE BOSS HOSS, among others. The boy has extremely flexible, nimble fingers and can play high speed as well as those grandiose solos that are slower, more sustained and where tone is placed cleanly on tone. He is supported by Benjamin and metalhead Siro Giger, a shredder before the Lord, almost a little shy on stage – and yet a guitarist who takes no prisoners. He also plays and sings in the metal demolition squad TERONATION.
Then there’s drummer Chrigel Bosshard, who used to beat his sticks with BONAPARTE and now does his job with STEFFE LA CHEFFE – a professional, hard-hitting and highly precise rhythm machine in the background. That leaves Marco „Blö“ Blöchlinger, who has long since earned his spurs and also lends his services to COWBOYS FROM HELL.

As I listen to the disc, this memoir of a rock’n’roll career, once again, I realise that Wabble’s voice actually sounds at least as much like Ozzy Osbourne as Bon Scott. However, it’s a rock voice that also has blues qualities that you wouldn’t think of from the start. A great example of this is „Scotch’n’Beer“, which sounds a bit like ZZ TOP’s „La Grange“ in terms of guitar, a Southern rock number that bangs clearly and honestly.
With every listen, it becomes clear who the creative minds behind this band and this music are. Alongside frontman Urs Schiess on the mic is lead guitarist Sacha Leuenberger. Not only does „Sash“ come pretty close to the „eponymous“ Gunners guitarist with his technique, it is he who ultimately stretches the range of the album across the rock decades. Want some examples? „Go Down“ is a classic hard rock broadside in the AC/DC style. The riffing and slightly wailing guitar sound of „Shot Through The Night“ reminds me of TED NUGENT. „War“ bangs like certain DEF LEPPARD songs, while „Friends“ is more for the AOR generation, WHITESNAKE and the like.

Sure, you can see my references completely differently – what I’m trying to say is that the band is broad-based, creative and an absolute blast live. They celebrated the christening of this album in the St. Gallen Grabenhalle – even though the album isn’t even available yet. There will probably have to be a release party. But a lot of things have to come together. The guitarist has to be in Switzerland again instead of Sweden, frontman Schiess is on home leave from a ship, Steffe La Cheffe has to give her drummer time off, TERONATION don’t have to be in a riotous mood and the bassist should be able to make it somehow. If that happens – go and see this band live! Because what they hint at in terms of musicality and power on this album, they top many times over on stage. Woe betide them when they let loose.
And with all this skill, the band can also afford to throw in a disco rock cover by pop rock old master ROD STEWART: da ya think I’m sexy? They are!

Conclusion

Good music has three attributes – it has to bang, it has to be fun and it has to be GOOD. With „Outlet Of A Rock’n’Roll Career“, OVEN KANE show what a rake is, where the rock hammer hangs. It’s just too bad that you hardly ever get to see these guys.
