NWOBHM? GIRLSCHOOL, TIGERS OF PAN TANG, IRON MAIDEN, SAXON oder eben OBSIDIAN BLACK haben eines gemeinsam – sie lieben den Heavy Metal, wie er in den Siebzigern und Achtzigern gepflegt wurde.

Die NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL entstand in genau jener Zeit, markierte quasi einen Neustart oder eine Weiterentwicklung und setzte schliesslich den Grundstein für den HEAVY METAL an sich.
Da wären wir dann also bei OBSIDIAN BLACK, einer Harteisentruppe aus der Ostschweiz. «Fünf Freunde, wie fünf Finger zu einer musikalischen Faust geballt», so bezeichnen die in der Ostschweiz beheimateten Marco Predicatori, Michael Edvi, Daniel Maggi sowie Oscar und Giorgio Chinellato den Zusammenhalt in ihrer Band. Dem aufmerksamen Leser dieser Plattform wird ein Name bekannt vorkommen. Als Sänger amtet Marco Predicatori, ebenfalls Teil des Trios PILOT OF THE DAYDREAM. In der aktuellen Besetzung taucht jedoch Marc Premonti am Mikrofon auf. Der Schreiberling dieser Review ist den Jungs auf den Leim gekrochen und hat erst nach einer Weile geschnallt, dass Premonti das Pseudonym hinter Predicatori ist.
OBSIDIAN BLACK bringen mit „Judgement Day“ am 25. Februar ihre zweite EP auf den Markt, nachdem sie 2020 ihr Debut „Change The World“ veröffentlicht hatten. Die Jungs aus Goldach und weiterer Umgebung haben sich bewusst der traditionellen Metalvariante verschrieben, der etwas weniger technischen und brutalen Version. Letztlich ist es aber auch der Groove, der etwas roher, ungeschliffener, dreckiger um die Ecke kommt.
Jetzt legen die Jungs also fünf neue Titel vor, die bereits eine deutliche Weiterentwicklung aufzeigen. Das Album ist kompakter, technisch feiner und reifer. Die Titel des Vorgängers schienen noch eher etwas wackelig zu sein, als ob die Band noch nicht ganz zusammengefunden hätte.
„Judgement Day“ erreicht ein neues Level, ist das Produkt einer Band, die sich gefunden und einen eigenen Stil entwickelt hat. Als bekennender SAXON-Fan sind die Briten mein absoluter Massstab, was dieses Genre anbelangt. Klar kann man eine Band bei ihrem zweiten Album nicht mit den Helden vergleichen – oder zumindest nur teilweise. Auf dem Track „Gates Of Babylon“ spielt Michael Edvi auf jeden Fall ein Solo, das sich gewaschen hat. Nicht wegen der Geschwindigkeit und technischen Perfektion, wie wir sie heute vor allem von den jungen Bands kennen – es ist eher diese Fähigkeit, auch mit eher wenigen, genau gesetzten Tönen die Gitarre zum Singen zu bringen, ihr jenes wolllüstige Jaulen zu entlocken, welches dieses Instrument im Rock auszeichnet.
Insgesamt gefällt mir die Gitarrenarbeit über das gesamte Album, neben den Soli das fette, unspektakuläre Riffing, das gemeinsam mit Drums und Bass einen festen Boden schafft, auf welchem Sänger Premonti aufsetzt.
Seine Stimme bestimmt den Groove der Band, kann seine Herkunft nicht verbergen, wechselt zwischen einem fast schon leichten Krächzen und den Höhen des Klargesangs – so muss eine Rockstimme klingen.
„Gates Of Babylon“ habe ich schon angetönt, „Lost Life In The Beautiful Storm“ ist der Opener, ein Midtempotrack, der sämtliche Ingredinezen ankündigt, welche die restlichen Tracks aufnehmen und ausfeilen. Der Titeltrack „Judgement Day“ mäandert zwischen Midtempo und Powerballade, „Lights In The Dusk“ hat den Weg aus der ersten Demo EP der Band auf die Scheibe gefunden . Der Track bedient sich beim Blues und dem Doom, wie wir ihn in der Ausprägung bei BLACK SABBATH finden – ein eindrücklicher Song, der den Körper zum Schwingen bringt.
„Fall Of The Dragon“ ist dann das beste Beispiel für ein typisches Metal-Riffing, fett und durchgehende Basis des Tracks.
Es verwundert nicht, dass die Truppe schon mit KING ZEBRA und NAZARETH auf der Bühne standen.
Fazit
Natürlich, wir unterstützen Musik aus der Schweiz besonders, sind vielleicht das eine oder andere Mal etwas gnädiger, positiver in der Besprechung. OBSIDIAN BLACK haben das nicht nötig. Ihre zweite EP ist ausgewachsen, technisch und musikalisch mehr als gelungen. Es ist eigentlich schade, dass daraus kein ausgewachsenes Album gemacht wurde – ich hätte problemlos nochmals fünf Titel auf diesem Niveau vertragen. Prädikat – holt euch den geilen Scheiss!

So here we are with OBSIDIAN BLACK, a hardcore troupe from eastern Switzerland. „Five friends, like five fingers clenched into a musical fist“, that’s how Marco Predicatori, Michael Edvi, Daniel Maggi and Oscar and Giorgio Chinellato, who are based in Eastern Switzerland, describe the cohesion in their band. The attentive reader of this platform will recognise one name. Marco Predicatori, also part of the trio PILOT OF THE DAYDREAM, is the singer. In the current line-up, however, Marco Premonti appears on the microphone. The writer of this review was taken in by the guys and only realised after a while that Premonti is the pseudonym behind Predicatori.
OBSIDIAN BLACK will release their second EP „Judgement Day“ on 25 February after releasing their debut „Change The World“ in 2020. The guys from Goldach and further afield have consciously dedicated themselves to the traditional metal variant, the somewhat less technical and brutal version. Ultimately, however, it’s also the groove that’s a bit more raw, unpolished, dirty around the corner.
So now the guys present five new tracks that already show a clear further development. The album is more compact, technically finer and more mature. The tiel of the predecessor still seemed rather shaky, as if the band hadn’t quite come together yet.
„Judgement Day“ reaches a new level, is the product of a band that has found itself and developed its own style. As a self-confessed SAXON fan, the Brits are my absolute benchmark as far as this genre is concerned. Of course, you can’t compare a band with the heroes on their second album – or at least only partially. On the track „Gates Of Babylon“, Michael Edvi definitely plays a solo that’s something to behold. Not because of the speed and technical perfection that we know today, especially from the young bands – it’s rather this ability to make the guitar sing even with rather few, precisely placed notes, to elicit from it that voluptuous yelp that distinguishes this instrument in rock.
Overall, I like the guitar work over the whole album, besides the solos the fat, unspectacular riffing, which together with drums and bass creates a solid ground on which singer Premonti sits.
His voice determines the groove of the band, can’t hide his origin, changes between an almost light croak and the heights of clear vocals – that’s how a rock voice has to sound.
„Gates Of Babylon“ I’ve already touched on, „Lost Life In The Beautiful Storm“ is the opener, a midtempo track that announces all the ingredients that the remaining tracks take up and polish. The title track „Judgement Day“ meanders between midtempo and power ballad, „Lights In The Dusk“ has found its way from the band’s first demo EP onto the disc. The track makes use of blues and doom, as we find it in the expression of BLACK SABBATH – an impressive song that makes the body vibrate.
„Fall Of The Dragon“ is then the best example of a typical metal riffing, fat and continuous basis of the track.
conclusion
Of course, we’re particularly supportive of music from Switzerland, perhaps being a little more gracious, more positive in our review a time or two. OBSIDIAN BLACK don’t need that. Their second EP is fully grown, technically and musically more than successful. It’s actually a pity that they didn’t make a full-fledged album out of it – I could have easily taken another five tracks on this level. Predicate – get the horny shit!
