OBSIDIAN BLACK – „Black Painted World“

Nachdem die Ostschweizer NWOBHMer bereits zwei EPs auf den Markt gebracht haben, liefern sie nun ihren ersten Volllänger. Hören wir mal rein, was die Scheibe taugt.

2022 haben Michael Edvi an der Gitarre, Marco Predicatori am Mikrofon, die Brüder Giorgio und Oscar Chinellato an Bass und Gitarre sowie Daniel Maggi an den Drums, ihre letzte EP „Judgement Day“ veröffentlicht. Nun folgt also „Black Painted World“, das mit einer Releaseparty am 27.09.25 im Krempel zu Buchs gefeiert werden wird. 10 Tracks haben es auf die Scheibe geschafft.
Diese wird es übrigens selbstverständlich als Stream und Download geben, ebenso als CD und exklusiv 50 Exemplare auf Vinyl. Wenn ich die Jungs das nächste Mal sehe, werde ich sie fragen, welchen Impact es für eine Band hat, wenn sie beim grössten Label der Welt unter Vertrag ist – wer kennt nicht den „Selbstverlag“…

Der Sound der Band orientiert sich an der New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, welche durch Grössen wie SAXON, IRON MAIDEN oder JUDAS PRIEST geprägt wurde. Orientiert meint hier, dass OBSIDIAN BLACK ihren Stil entwickelt haben, den Sound mit eigenen Elementen gespickt hat, modernisiert hat. Das kann man als Band, die weniger der Tradition verpflichtet ist, als es die grossen Protagonisten sind.
es sind Elemente wie der Beginn des Openers und Titeltracks, der mit einem Basslauf startet, wie wir ihn auch aus dem Klassikrock kennen, kommen die Drums und die ersten Riffs dazu, könnte man auch Bands in der Richtung von PINK FLOYD erwarten.

Leider gibt es noch kein Videomaterial der Band, deshalb ein Track aus der letzten EP, um einen Eindruck zu erhalten, wie die Band klingt…

Auch die Stimme Marco Predicatoris, die wir aus der Rockformation PILOTS OF THE DAYDREAMS kennen, ist nicht typisch für das Genre. Diese hohe Tonlage, die getragene Melancholie, aber auch die eindringliche Kraft – passt das nun besser zum Pilotenrock oder doch zum angereicherten Heavy Metal? Das Urteil dazu überlasse ich getrost dem Publikum.
In „Crucified Sins zeigt sich, dass Predicatori durchaus die tieferen Parts beherrscht, sich schon beinahe den klassischen Growls annähert. Das könnte mir als Mittel gefallen, das öfter eingesetzt werden darf.
Prägend wirken im Album etwa das Miteinander der beiden Gitarren. Oft spielen sich die beiden Protagonisten den Ball hin und her, die zweistimmigen Leads lassen dadurch die Begriffe Lead- und Rhythmusgitarre verschmelzen.
Was eine gute Band braucht, was sie auszeichnet und oft zu sehr in den Hintergrund rückt, ist die Bass- und Drum-Sektion. Im vorliegenden Fall zeigt sie für ein präzises und tragendes Fundament verantwortlich. Mir ist es schwer gefallen, aus den zehn Tracks Anspieltipps zu definieren. Was mich aber sehr beeindruckt hat, ist der Titeltrack – insbesondere die Gitarrensoli.
Ebenfalls spannend ist der Track „Defender Of Justice“, eine der Powerballaden auf dem Album. Einmal mehr ist es die Gitarrenarbeit, welche den Duktus dieser Nummer ausmacht. Ich gehe jede Wette ein, dass Michael Edvi auch ein Fan von David Gilmour ist.

Fazit

„Black Painted World“ ist eine Weiterentwicklung dessen, was ich von OBSIDIAN BLACK kenne – welche aber die Qualität des bisherigen Schaffens mitnimmt. Warum sollte man auch ändern, was sich bewährt hat? Manchmal sind es die feinen Erweiterungen, welche eine Entwicklung auszeichnen und das grosse Ganze nicht aus dem Auge lassen.
OBSIDIAN BLACK haben sich als Metalband über die Region hinaus etabliert, Auftritte auf grossen Bühnen sind ihnen zu wünschen – es muss ja nciht gerade die Hauptbühne vom W:O:A sein. Ich kann das Album ohne Einschränkung zum Kauf empfehlen – mal sehen, ob ich eine der Vinyls ergattern kann…

In 2022, Michael Edvi on guitar, Marco Predicatori on vocals, brothers Giorgio and Oscar Chinellato on bass and guitar, and Daniel Maggi on drums released their latest EP, “Judgement Day”. Now comes “Black Painted World,” which will be celebrated with a release party on September 27, 2025, at Krempel in Buchs. Ten tracks made it onto the album.
Incidentally, it will of course be available to stream and download, as well as on CD and, exclusively, 50 copies on vinyl. Next time I see the guys, I’ll ask them what impact it has on a band when they’re signed to the biggest label in the world – who isn’t familiar with “self-publishing”…

The band’s sound is based on the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, which was shaped by greats such as SAXON, IRON MAIDEN, and JUDAS PRIEST. Based here means that OBSIDIAN BLACK have developed their own style, peppered the sound with their own elements, and modernized it. This is possible as a band that is less committed to tradition than the big protagonists are.
There are elements such as the beginning of the opener and title track, which starts with a bass line familiar from classic rock, followed by the drums and the first riffs, which could also be expected from bands in the vein of PINK FLOYD.

Marco Predicatori’s voice, which we know from the rock formation PILOTS OF THE DAYDREAMS, is also not typical for the genre. This high pitch, the solemn melancholy, but also the haunting power—does that fit better with pilot rock or with enriched heavy metal? I’ll leave that judgment to the audience.
In “Crucified Sins,” it becomes clear that Predicatori has mastered the lower parts, almost approaching classic growls. I could like that as a device that is used more often.

The interplay between the two guitars has a formative effect on the album. The two protagonists often play the ball back and forth, with the two-part leads merging the concepts of lead and rhythm guitar.

What a good band needs, what sets it apart and often takes too much of a back seat, is the bass and drum section. In this case, they are responsible for a precise and supporting foundation. I found it difficult to pick out recommended tracks from the ten on offer. But I was very impressed by the title track—especially the guitar solos. 

The track “Defender Of Justice,” one of the power ballads on the album, is also exciting. Once again, it is the guitar work that defines the style of this song. I would bet anything that Michael Edvi is also a fan of David Gilmour.

Conclusion

“Black Painted World” is a further development of what I know from OBSIDIAN BLACK – but it maintains the quality of their previous work. Why change something that has proven itself? Sometimes it’s the subtle enhancements that characterize a development and keep the big picture in mind.

OBSIDIAN BLACK have established themselves as a metal band beyond the region, and we wish them performances on big stages – it doesn’t have to be the main stage at W:O:A. I can recommend the album without reservation – let’s see if I can get my hands on one of the vinyls…
