GODSMACK sind ein Phänomen – sie haben so viele top ten Hits geschrieben, dass sie locker eine Show mit ausschliesslich diesen Tracks spielen könnten – eine lange Show inklusive Zugaben. Sie stellen damit nicht nur die FOO FIGHTERS in den Schatten, sondern auch die Kultrocker AEROSMITH, welche ebenfalls aus Boston kommen. Erstaunlich dabei; GODSMACK haben in unseren Breitengraden nie denselben Status wie die beiden genannten Bands erreicht. Sind Sully Erna, Robbie Merrill, Tony Rombola und Shannon Larkin ein amerikanisches Phänomen? Oder sind die Jungs einfach zu schlecht im Marketing? So ähnlich wie Apple Computer in den frühen Jahren – jede Menge Qualität und trotzdem im Verhältnis zu wenig Aufmerksamkeit. Die Frage bleibt offen. Auf jeden Fall legen die Jungs ein neues Album vor – das achte mittlerweile – bei dem es unmöglich ist, nicht die volle Punktzahl zu geben.
„Lighting Up The Sky“ ist einhundert Prozent GODSMACK-DNA, jeder Ton, jeder Track kann niemand Anderen zugeordnet werden, als genau dieser Band. Haben GODSMACK Bands, die sie beeinflusst haben? Falsche Frage – eher; wie viele Bands werden die Bostoner Rocker als ihren Einfluss nennen? Oder wie soll sich eine Band noch beweisen können und müssen, die bereits ihr Debutalbum vierfach mit Platin veredeln konnte? Eigentlich klar – mit einer Scheibe, die wiederum viel Hitmaterial liefert. Noch mehr Hitmaterial? Irgendwie ist das kaum möglich – und doch finden sich verschiedene Tracks, welche auf jeden Fall wieder das Potenzial haben, ganz vorne in den verschiedensten Charts mitzumischen. Und vielleicht wird es dann ja auch mal was mit einem Grammy?
Anspieltipps? Ja, da gibt es mehr, als ich hier besprechen möchte. Ich picke mir einmal „Growing Old“ heraus, eine epische, kraftvolle Ballade, welche besonders Sully Erna’s Stimme zu ihrer vollen Blüte verhilft. Überhaupt ist das ja eine Stimme, die alle Ingredienzen hat, die eine grosse Rockvoice auszeichnen. Dann wäre da noch „Surrender“, der Track zeigt genau, was GODSMACK auszeichnet – die Jungs lieben, was sie tun und sind eine grandiose Liveband – Spielfreude pur!
Fazit
Nicht umsonst hat diese Truppe mehr Nummer 1 – Hits als die FOO FIGHTERS. Zusammen mit Dave Grohls Kapelle sind das für mich zwei der letzten, richtig grossen Rock- und Stadionbands, Grohl und Erna zwei gigantische Rockstars. GODSMACK as its best – kaufen ist ja eh klar, oder?

GODSMACK are a phenomenon – they have written so many top ten hits that they could easily play a show with only these tracks – a long show including encores. They not only outshine the FOO FIGHTERS, but also the cult rockers AEROSMITH, who also come from Boston. Surprisingly, GODSMACK have never reached the same status in our latitudes as the two aforementioned bands. Are Sully Erna, Robbie Merrill, Tony Rombola and Shannon Larkin an American phenomenon? Or are these guys just too bad at marketing? Kind of like Apple Computer in the early years – lots of quality, yet proportionately too little attention. The question remains open. In any case, the guys present a new album – the eighth by now – for which it is impossible not to give the full score.
„Lighting Up The Sky“ is one hundred percent GODSMACK DNA, every note, every track can’t be assigned to anyone else but exactly this band. Do GODSMACK have bands that have influenced them? Wrong question – rather; how many bands will the Boston rockers name as their influence? Or how should a band still be able to and have to prove itself, which could already ennoble its debut album with quadruple platinum? Actually clear – with a disk, which supplies again much hit material. Even more hit material? Somehow that’s hardly possible – and yet there are several tracks that definitely have the potential to be at the top of the charts again. And maybe it will be something with a Grammy?
Tips for playing? Yes, there are more than I would like to discuss here. I’ll pick out „Growing Old“, an epic, powerful ballad, which especially helps Sully Erna’s voice to its full bloom. In general, this is a voice that has all the ingredients that distinguish a great rock voice. Then there is „Surrender“, the track shows exactly what distinguishes GODSMACK – the guys love what they do and are a great live band – pure joy of playing!
Conclusion
Not for nothing this band has more number 1 hits than the FOO FIGHTERS. Together with Dave Grohl’s band these are for me two of the last, really great rock and stadium bands, Grohl and Erna two gigantic rock stars. GODSMACK as its best – buy it is clear anyway, right?
