Ich bin ja jetzt nicht der absolut bekennende Hardcore-Fan. Was EMMURE angeht, bin ich da schon bei ihrem Album „Eternal Enemies“ von 2014 eingeknickt.

Das amerikanische Trio aus Connecticut ist seit 2003 unterwegs und besteht heute aus Frankie Palmeri am Mikrofon, Josh Travis an der Gitarre und Josh Miller an den Drums. Wikipedia bezeichnet die Jungs als Metalcore-Band. Falls dem so sein sollte, sind sie die härtesten Jungs der Szene – für mich ist das astreiner Hardcore, allerdings mit klaren Avancen in Richtung Rap. EMMURE sind so eine Art LIMP BIZKIT ohne Weichspüler.
Die Band hat diverse Lineup-Wechsel schadlos überstanden und sich musikalisch stets weiterentwickelt. Für mich gehören sie heute zu den ganz Grossen des Genres.

Mit „Hindsight“ liefern die Jungs ihr achtes Studioalbum ab. Sie haben nichts an Härte verloren, kein Jota weniger Wut in ihrer Musik und trotzdem erscheint mir die aktuelle Scheibe „feiner“, differenzierter und melodischer als frühere Werke. Auf jeden Fall ist das Album ein Dampfhammer an Intensität und Druck, da werden keine Gefangenen gemacht. Wer Lautstärke, hammermässige Bässe, gandenloses Screaming und Growling nicht verträgt, sollte die Finger von der Scheibe lassen.
Muss man sich einzelne Songs genauer anhören? Nee, Bretter sind grundsätzlich alle Tracks und wie es sich für Metal- und Hardcore gehört, unterscheiden sie sich jeweils nicht total. Balladen zum Beispiel sucht man ebenso vergebens wie bluesige oder jazzige Tracks. Allerdings gibt es zum Beispiel Scratch-Elemente bei „Finally Understanding Nothing“. Ansonsten ist das gesamte Album ein Stapel von verflucht hartem Holz. Irgendwie gefällt mir zum Beispiel die schräge „Gypsy Disco“ gut. Allerdings befürchte ich, dass die Jungs den Track umbenennen müssen, spätestens wenn sie in der Schweiz aufschlagen. Wo schon Mohrenköpfe zum Politikum werden, was wird dann erst mit Zigeunern?
Die Jungs spielen auch wie gewohnt mit der Sprache – etwa beim ziemlich doomig-industrial angehauchten „I’ve Scene Good“. Man kann sagen, was man will; EMMURE sind eine verflucht kreative Truppe und ohne sie den entsprechenden Genre zuzuordnen – sie sind im besten Sinne progressiv.

Fazit

Wie gesagt, Hardcore ist eigentlich nicht so mein Ding. EMMURE waren hier schon immer eine Ausnahme, weil sie einfach intelligenten Sound machen, hart aber nicht dumpf. Mit „Hindsight“ haben sie mich total um den Finger gewickelt, das Album ist einfach grandios.

In any case, the album is a steam hammer of intensity and pressure, no prisoners are taken. If you can’t stand volume, hammering bass, gandenlossy screaming and growling, you should keep your hands off the record.
Do you have to listen to single songs more closely? Nah, Bretter are basically all tracks and as it is true for Metal- and Hardcore, they donŽt differ totally. Ballads for example are just as vain as bluesy or jazzy tracks. But there are scratch elements on „Finally Understanding Nothing“ for example. Otherwise the whole album is a pile of fucking hard wood. Somehow I like the weird „Gypsy Disco“ for example. But I’m afraid that the guys will have to rename the track, at the latest when they hit the road in Switzerland. Where already carrots become a political issue, what will happen to gypsies?
The guys also play with the language as usual – for example in the rather doomy-industrial „I’ve Scene Good“. You can say what you want; EMMURE are a fucking creative troop and without assigning them to the corresponding genre – they are progressive in the best sense of the word.

Conclusion

As I said, hardcore is not really my thing. EMMURE have always been an exception, because they just make intelligent sound, hard but not dull. With „Hindsight“ they have me totally wrapped around my finger, the album is just great.
