Wer ist diese ELLES BAILEY, die 2021 zum UK Blues Artist of the Year bei den UK Blues Awards 2021 gewählt wurde und für die
UK Americana Awards 2022 als Artist Of The Year nominiert ist?
Zum Einen haben wir es hier mit einer grandiosen Sängerin zu tun. Eine unheimlich warme, klare Stimme mit einer Kraft und Dynamik, wie wir sie beispielsweise bei einer BETH HART finden. Und doch gefällt mir Bailey’s Timbre noch ein Stück besser. Die Sängerin sucht ihresgleichen!
Die Motivation zu diesem Album dürfte zumindest teilweise ein Resultat der Pandemie sein. So kommentiert die Musikerin:
„Bei diesem Album ging es darum, herauszufinden, wer ich ohne die Show, die Bühne und den Glanz bin, die Schichten zu entwirren und damit klarzukommen.„

„Shining In The Half Light“ ist Baileys drittes Studioalbum. Sie nahm es zusammen mit Gitarrist Joe Wilkins, Bassist Matthew Waer, Pianist Jonny Henderson und Schlagzeuger Matthew Jones im Dezember 2020 in den Middle Farm Studios (Devon) auf. Niemand Geringerer als Dan Weller (ENTER SHIKARI) produzierte die Scheibe.

Wer mich kennt weiss, dass ich abwechslungsreiche Alben mag, Blues für mich nach wie vor die Basis dessen ist, was wir heute im Rockbereich kennen. Jetzt höre ich mir das Album also an, das mit dem Label „Blues’n’Roots“ aufwartet, im weitesten Sinn auch als Spreizung zwischen Blues und Americana bezeichnen werden kann.
Americana? Das ist doch dieser Country-Verschnitt, oder? Für mich nicht zwingend, sondern vielmehr Musik, welche sich zwar in der Nähe der amerikanischen Volksmusik bewegt, letztlich aber ursprünglicher ist und mehr Freiheiten in der Interpretation zulässt.
Und doch; „Shining In The Half Light“ ist für mich ein Blues-Album, teilweise sogar Bluesrock im Midtempo-Bereich.
Ein Beispiel dafür ist etwa „Sunshine City“ – wobei genau hier auch Country durchdrückt – etwa mit der typischen Slide Guitar. Ein anderes Beispiel ist „The Game“ – groovy und zum coolen Boots-Spitzen-Wippen geeignet.
Selbst in die „typischen“ Bluestracks sind Elemente anderer Stile eingearbeitet. So ist „Riding Out The Storm“ leicht jazzig angehaucht, der Titeltrack nimmt etwas psychedelische Stimmung auf. Zudem erinnert mich Bailey’s Stimme hier an Dani Klein, die Sänger von VAYA CON DIOS.
„Stones“ erinnert mich von der Stimmung und dem leicht schleppenden Groove an TOM WAITS‘ „Cold Cold Ground“.

Fazit

Warum gebe ich dem Album nur acht anstelle von neun oder zehn Punkten, wenn es mich doch so begeistert? Einerseits – zehn gibt’s, wenn mich was völlig und sofort aus den Schuhen knallt, neun, wenn schon alles stimmt, aber das letzte Quäntchen fehlt. Und schliesslich; acht „burning headphones“ gibt es nur, wenn es ein überdurchnittliches Album ist.
Und genau das haben wir hier vorliegen – ein faszinierendes, abwechlungsreiches Album mit einer faszinierenden, charismatischen Frontfrau, von der wir noch viel hören dürften. Fans von gutem Blues mit Country- und Americana-Anleihen; kaufen!

Who is this ELLES BAILEY, who was voted UK Blues Artist of the Year at the 2021 UK Blues Awards and is nominated for the
UK Americana Awards 2022 as Artist Of The Year?
For one thing, we are dealing here with a terrific singer. An incredibly warm, clear voice with a power and dynamic that we find, for example, in a BETH HART. And yet I like Bailey’s timbre even more. The singer is second to none!
The motivation for this album is probably at least partly a result of the pandemic. As the musician comments:
„This album was about finding out who I am without the show, the stage and the glamour, unravelling the layers and coming to terms with that.„
„Shining In The Half Light“ is Bailey’s third studio album. She recorded it with guitarist Joe Wilkins, bassist Matthew Waer, pianist Jonny Henderson and drummer Matthew Jones at Middle Farm Studios (Devon) in December 2020. None other than Dan Weller (ENTER SHIKARI) produced the disc.

Those who know me know that I like varied albums, blues for me is still the basis of what we know in rock today. So now I’m listening to the album that comes with the label „Blues’n’Roots“, which in the broadest sense can also be described as a straddle between Blues and Americana.
Americana? That’s that country-flavour, isn’t it? For me, not necessarily, but rather music that is close to American folk music, but ultimately more original and allows more freedom in interpretation.
And yet; „Shining In The Half Light“ is for me a blues album, partly even blues rock in the midtempo range.
An example of this is „Sunshine City“ – although it is precisely here that country comes through – for example with the typical slide guitar. Another example is „The Game“ – groovy and suitable for cool boat-tip bobbing.
Even in the „typical“ blues tracks, elements of other styles are incorporated. Thus, „Riding Out The Storm“ has a slight jazzy touch, the title track takes on a somewhat psychedelic mood. Moreover, Bailey’s voice here reminds me of Dani Klein, the singer of VAYA CON DIOS.
„Stones“ reminds me of TOM WAITS‘ „Cold Cold Ground“ from the mood and the slightly dragging groove.

conclusion

Why am I only giving this album eight points instead of nine or ten, when it excites me so much? On the one hand – ten is given when something completely and immediately knocks me off my feet, nine when everything is already right but the last bit is missing. And finally; eight „burning headphones“ are only given if it’s an above-average album.
And that’s exactly what we have here – a fascinating, varied album with a fascinating, charismatic front woman from whom we should still hear a lot. Fans of good blues with country and Americana leanings; buy!
