CRAZY LIXX – «Street Lethal»
Frontiers Records haben ihren Output an neuen Alben und Bands ordentlich nach Oben geschraubt. Zusammen mit einer Vielzahl an Retorten-Projekten des Frontiers-Masterminds Serafino Perugino und Stamm-Komponisten/Quantitäts-Weltmeisters Alessandro Del Vecchio gab es in den letzten Jahren eine für Frontiers untypisch grosse Anzahl an zumindest fragwürdigen Veröffentlichungen. Umso schöner, wenn eine alteingesessene Band ihr mittlerweile siebtes Studioalbum – plus ein Livealbum – veröffentlicht (das sechste Studioalbum bei Frontiers Records).

American Glam-Hard-Rock made in Sweden mit durchzogener Bilanz zuhause bei Frontiers Records

Und so viel vorweg: Die Schweden bleiben ihrer Richtung treu. Zu hören gibt es sleazig-glamig amerikanischen Hard Rock made in Sweden. Die Band erfindet sich selbst und das Genre nicht neu, versteht es aber wie wenig andere, die Essenz des 80er Hard Rocks zu extrahieren und eigene Songs daraus zu formen. Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Guns ‘n Roses, Mötley Crüe und viele weitere standen Pate und finden sich im CRAZY LIXX Sound wieder. Oft mit einer gehörigen Portion Schalk und einem Augenzwinkern, aber immer als Hommage und nicht als Persiflage zu verstehen. Zieht man das Intro und ein Intermezzo ab, liefert die Band ihren Hörern 9 Songs zwischen Haarspray und Ledermütze, Zuckerwatte und Bourbon.

Mit «Rise Above» ist dem Fünfer ein fulminanter Start in «Street Lethal» gelungen, gefolgt von der ersten Single-Auskopplung «Anthem For America». Der Song soll ein Weckruf für die amerikanische Jungend sein, welche den Rock aus ihren Herzen verbannt hat. Und tatsächlich würde ich beim Hören dieses Stücks am liebsten ins Cabrio steigen und mit Sonne im Herzen durch die Landschaft cruisen. Und das, obwohl ich gar kein Cabrio habe. Und es draussen neblig und 5 Grad kalt ist. Die beiden ersten Songs führen einen 40 Jahre zurück, als der Hard Rock noch Stammplätze in den Hitparaden belegte und ich noch Haare hatte, und machen Lust auf mehr.
Mit «The Power» folgt eine für CRAZY LIXX ungewöhnliche Überraschung: Als motivierender Power-Party-Song im Def Leppard Kleid gedacht, wirkt das Stück aufgesetzt und zu gewollt. Der einzige Totalausfall auf «Street Lethal» (und vermutlich der erste überhaupt im Schaffen der CRAZY LIXX).
Mit «Reach Out» folgt eine kurze Versöhnung, ein Gute-Laune-Song mit Mitsinggarantie. Der Rest des Albums bietet gute Abwechslung. Und dennoch: Das goldene Händchen der CRAZY LIXX, welche uns seit jeher mit grossartigen Melodien verwöhnen, hat auf «Street Lethal» etwas Patina angesetzt.

Fazit
Nicht immer zünden die Refrains, nicht immer treffen die Hooks ins Schwarze. Nicht immer packen einen die Riffs am Mitwipp-Nerv. Das Album ist mit seinem bis in die höchsten Noten perfekt zelebrierten EOR (Eighties Oriented Rock) immer noch weit über dem Durchschnitt ähnlicher Combos. Dennoch scheint die Band etwas festgefahren und bedarf für den achten Longplayer einiger neuer Ideen und Inspirationen. Vielleicht würde etwas von dem Dreck der früheren Alben guttun. Vielleicht hat Danny Rexton seine besten Song-Ideen dieses Jahr auch einfach an Chez Kane abgegeben.

Frontiers Records have been ramping up their output of new albums and bands. Together with a multitude of retort projects by Frontiers mastermind Serafino Perugino and regular composer/quantity world champion Alessandro Del Vecchio, there has been an uncharacteristically large number of at least questionable releases in recent years. All the nicer, then, when a long-established band releases its now seventh studio album – plus a live album (the sixth studio album on Frontiers Records).
And this much in advance: The Swedes stay true to their direction. You can listen to sleazy-glam American hard rock made in Sweden. The band doesn’t reinvent itself and the genre, but understands like few others how to extract the essence of 80s hard rock and form their own songs from it. Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Guns ’n Roses, Mötley Crüe and many others were the inspiration and are reflected in the CRAZY LIXX sound. Often with a good portion of mischief and a wink, but always as homage and not as persiflage. If you subtract the intro and an intermezzo, the band delivers 9 songs to their listeners between hairspray and leather hat, candyfloss and bourbon.

With „Rise Above“, the five-piece has managed a brilliant start to „Street Lethal“, followed by the first single release „Anthem For America“. The song is supposed to be a wake-up call for the American youth, who have banned rock from their hearts. And indeed, when I hear this song, I would love to get into a convertible and cruise through the countryside with the sun in my heart. And that even though I don’t have a convertible. And it’s foggy and 5 degrees cold outside. The first two songs take you back 40 years, when hard rock still occupied regular places in the charts and I still had hair, and make you want more.
With „The Power“ follows an unusual surprise for CRAZY LIXX: Intended as a motivational power party song in Def Leppard dress, the piece seems forced and too deliberate. The only total failure on „Street Lethal“ (and probably the first ever in the work of CRAZY LIXX).
With „Reach Out“ follows a short reconciliation, a good mood song with sing-along guarantee. The rest of the album offers good variety. And yet: The golden touch of CRAZY LIXX, who have always spoiled us with great melodies, has put on some patina on „Street Lethal“.

conclusion
The choruses don’t always hit, the hooks don’t always hit the mark. The riffs don’t always grab you by the nerve to bounce along. The album with its EOR (Eighties Oriented Rock), perfectly celebrated up to the highest notes, is still far above the average of similar combos. Nevertheless, the band seems a bit stuck and needs some new ideas and inspirations for the eighth longplayer. Maybe some of the grime of the earlier albums would do good. Or maybe Danny Rexton just gave his best song ideas to Chez Kane this year.
