CIRCLE OF FRIENDS ist ein Projekt des Eigentümers und Herausgebers des kultigen Fireworks Magazines Bruce Mee. Bereits früher war der Mann, der im Hintergrund der Melodic Rock Welt ein bekannter Player ist, Chef der renommierten Now & Then Records.

Das Projekt, aus dem nun das aktuelle Album „The Garden“ entstanden ist, hat er als Tribut für seine an Krebs verstorbene Mutter ins Leben gerufen. Welche Bedeutung der Mann hat, zeigt allein das Lineup der Gäste auf diesem Album. Man kann das getrost ein „Who Is Who“ der Classic und Melodic Rockszene lesen:

Musikalisch zeichnet in erster Linie die Band Heartwind verantwortlich, sie bilden den Kern des Projektes, Gitarrist Göran Engvall hat die meisten der Tracks auf dem Album geschrieben. Und was findet sich nun auf dem Album?

In erster Linie finden sich 13 Tracks auf dem Album, zusätzlich finden sich Cover wie „Trick Of The Light“ von THE WHO, „Knowing Me Knowing You“ von ABBA, zu welchem Robin Beck ihre einmalige Stimme beiträgt oder (Don’t Fear) The Reaper von BLUE ÖYSTER CULT, gesungen von Robin McAuley.
Allein die enorme Klasse der beteiligten Gäste macht das Album zu einem Stück Musikgeschichte. Dem Freund melodischen Rocks werden all jene Anleihen gefallen, die sich seit den Siebziger- und Achtzigerjahren durch das Genre ziehen – Keyboards, die typischen Gitarrenriffs, oft unspektakuläre dafür top präzise Gitarrensoli und natürlich die eher hohen, meist mehrstimmigen Gesangsparts.

Es macht definitiv wenig Sinn, auf die einzelnen Titel einzugehen, jeder steht für sich, erzählt ein eigene Geschichte und repräsentiert die Musiker, die dahinter stehen. Sicher, die Spanne zwischen eher harten Tracks wie „Little Piece Of Heaven“ mit Doro oder das hart am Pop vorbei schrammende „Knowing Me Knowing You“ ist gewagt. Aber, wer nichts wagt, der nichts gewinnt. „The Garden“ ist ein Album ohne Hänger oder Füller, alle Songs haben ihre Berechtigung, passen ins runde Gesamtkonzept.
Schade nur; man wird diese Musik wohl nur vereinzelt live zu hören kriegen, das Gesamtwerk ist zum Verbleib auf dem Datenträger verdammt…

Fazit

„The Garden“ ist ein grossartiges Album und für den AOR/Melodic Rock Fan ein absolutes Muss! Man mag den einen oder anderen Song zu soft, vielleicht gar etwas schnulzig finden – andere vielleicht zu hart für das Genre. Diese Breite an Musikalität macht das Album zu etwas Besonderem – kaufen, kaufen, kaufen!

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS is a project of the owner and publisher of the iconic Fireworks Magazine Bruce Mee. Already previously, the man who is a well-known player in the background of the melodic rock world was head of the renowned Now & Then Records.

The project, which has now given rise to the current album „The Garden“, he created as a tribute to his mother who died of cancer. The importance of the man is shown by the line-up of guests on this album alone. One can confidently read this a „Who Is Who“ of the classic and melodic rock scene:

Musically, the band Heartwind is primarily responsible, they form the core of the project, guitarist Göran Engvall wrote most of the tracks on the album. And what can be found on the album?

First and foremost, there are 13 tracks on the album, plus covers like „Trick Of The Light“ by THE WHO, „Knowing Me Knowing You“ by ABBA, to which Robin Beck contributes her unique voice, or (Don’t Fear) The Reaper by BLUE ÖYSTER CULT, sung by Robin McAuley.
The enormous class of the guests involved alone makes the album a piece of music history. The friend of melodic rock will like all those borrowings that have been running through the genre since the seventies and eighties – keyboards, the typical guitar riffs, often unspectacular but top precise guitar solos and of course the rather high, mostly polyphonic vocal parts..

There is definitely little point in going into detail about the individual tracks, each stands on its own, tells its own story and represents the musicians behind it. Sure, the span between rather hard tracks like „Little Piece Of Heaven“ with Doro or the hard scraping past pop „Knowing Me Knowing You“ is daring. But, nothing ventured, nothing gained. „The Garden“ is an album without hanger or filler, all songs have their justification, fit into the round overall concept.
But it’s a pity; you will probably only get to hear this music live occasionally, the complete work is doomed to remain on the data carrier…

conclusion

„The Garden“ is a great album and an absolute must for the AOR/Melodic Rock fan! One might find one or the other song too soft, maybe even a bit schmaltzy – others maybe too hard for the genre. This breadth of musicality makes the album something special – buy, buy, buy!
