Hätte mir jemand gesagt, dass es in Indien Heavy Metal gibt, hätte ich erst einmal die Stirn gerunzelt. Allerdings, weshalb eigentlich nicht? Hätte mir derselbe Jemand gesagt, dass da eine Truppe ein Debutalbum präsentieren würde, das dir das Hirn rausbläst, hätte ich wohl laut gelacht. Ich stellte mir dann diese übercolorierten Inder vor, die irgendwo in Gstaad auf den Alpweiden rumtanzen und dabei etwas härtere Musik machen. Und jetzt das!
BLOODYWOOD sind Karan Katiyar (Gitarre, Flöte), Jayant Bhadula (Gesang), Raoul Kerr (Rap), Sarthak Pahwa (Dhol), Roshan Roy (Bass) und Vishes Singh (Drums). Die Kapelle stammt aus Neu Delhi und spielt seit 2016 zusammen. Und ziemlich erstaunlich – auf ihrer ersten Europatour spielte die Truppe 2019 gleich mal WACKEN. Doch was bringt mich dazu, dem Debut der Band gleich die Maximalpunktzahl zu geben? Eines ist klar, ich habe noch nie eine Review mit so vielen Videos geschrieben – warum nicht etwas Metalkino?
Der Albumtitel „Rakshak“ bedeutet soviel wie Wächter und beschreibt nicht zuletzt das soziale Engagement der Band.
Musikalisch haben die Jungs hier eine Meisterleistung vollbracht. Da werden Folkelemente mit klassischer indischer Musik und Rap vermischt – und das Ganze in eine Metalhülle verpackt. Das Album strotzt vom ersten bis zum letzten Ton nur so von Power, ist mehr als fett, haut dir die Beine weg und lässt dich staunend im Dreck liegen. In ein Genre kann man den Sound eigentlich nicht packen, der Begriff „Panjabi-Metal“ wird dem Ganzen am ehesten gerecht, weil er keine Grenzen setzt.
Bereits der Opener „Gaddaar“ verblüfft – da wird kurz auf indisch gerappt, dann fahren sofort die fetten Riffs und hochpräzisen Drums auf. Sofort fliegen dir Metalwände um die Ohren, die auch Hardcore-Fans erfreuen würden. Das gesamte Album ist – positiv – wütend und ein Brett, es gibt definitiv keine Schwächen.
Beispiele gefällig – dann hört euch jeden verdammten Track an – die Jungs sind eine Sensation!
Wie gesagt, da gibt es Anleihen bei Hardcore, Gesang wie beim Metalcore, Flöten, die klingen, als wären ELUVEITIE Gäste auf der Scheibe – selbst die kurze Passage einer weiblichen Gesangsstimme erinnert an Anna Murphy (früher ELU, heute CELLAR DARLING).
Was ich glauben muss – und will – die Band ist sozial engagiert, ist politisch motiviert, kämpft für eine bessere Welt und den Frieden unter den Menschen. „Erwartet einen Aufstand – Machi Bhasad“!
Fazit
Irgendwie mag ich gar nicht mehr zu dem Album schreiben. Hört euch „Rakshak“ einfach an, es ist definitiv eines der besten Alben 2022 und wird Metalbands in Europa, UK oder den USA die Schweissperlen auf die Stirn treiben. Wer sich dieses Album nicht beschafft, ist sowas von selber Schuld!!!
Nur noch dies; diesen Sommer werden die Jungs das SUMMER BREEZE rocken – fahrt hin!

If someone had told me that there was heavy metal in India, I would have frowned at first. However, why not actually? If the same person had told me that there was a troupe presenting a debut album that would blow your brains out, I would probably have laughed out loud. I then imagined these over-coloured Indians dancing around in the alpine meadows somewhere in Gstaad, playing some harder music. And now this!
BLOODYWOOD are Karan Katiyar (guitar, flute), Jayant Bhadula (vocals), Raoul Kerr (rap), Sarthak Pahwa (dhol), Roshan Roy (bass) and Vishes Singh (drums). The band hails from New Delhi and has been playing together since 2016. And quite amazingly – on their first European tour, the troupe played WACKEN right away in 2019. But what makes me give the band’s debut the maximum score right away? One thing is clear, I’ve never written a review with so many videos – why not some metal cinema?
The album title „Rakshak“ means guardian and describes not least the band’s social commitment. Musically, the boys have achieved a masterpiece here. Folk elements are mixed with classical Indian music and rap – and the whole thing is wrapped in a metal shell. The album is bursting with power from the first to the last note, is more than fat, knocks your legs off and leaves you lying in the dirt in amazement. You can’t really put the sound into one genre, the term „Panjabi-Metal“ does the best justice to the whole thing, because it doesn’t set any limits.
The opener „Gaddaar“ already amazes – there is a short rap in Indian, then the fat riffs and highly precise drums start immediately. Immediately, walls of metal fly around your ears, which would also please hardcore fans. The whole album is – positively – furious and a board, there are definitely no weaknesses.
Examples willing – then listen to every damn track – these guys are a sensation!
As I said, there are borrowings from hardcore, vocals like metalcore, flutes that sound like ELUVEITIE are guests on the disc – even the short passage of a female vocal reminds of Anna Murphy (former ELU, now CELLAR DARLING).
What I have to believe – and want to believe – the band is socially engaged, is politically motivated, fights for a better world and peace among people. „Expect an uprising – Machi Bhasad!“
conclusion
Somehow I don’t even like to write more about the album. Just listen to „Rakshak“, it is definitely one of the best albums of 2022 and will make metal bands in Europe, UK or USA sweat. If you don’t get this album, it’s so your own fault!!!
