Einmal kurz zu Beginn – die BLACK SPACE RIDERS sind nicht zu verwechseln mit der THIN LIZZY-Nachfolgetruppe BLACK STAR RIDERS! Auf der einen Seite ein Genre-Feuerwerk, auf der anderen Hardrock mit Geschichte.
BSR sind JE für Gesang, Gitarre, Elektronik, Keyboard und Orgel, SEB ebenfalls für Gesang sowie Elektronik, SLI an der Gitarre, C.RIP am Schlagzeug und MEI am Bass. Was die Jungs seit 2008 veranstalten, ist schwierig für den Erfolg und anspruchsvoll für die Zuhörerschaft – ihre Musik ist enorm vielfältig und anspruchsvoll. Die obige Aufzählung der Genrebezüge ist durchaus realistisch, als Einflüsse müsste wohl eine ganze Batterie an Bands aufgelistet werden. Gleichzeitig kann die Band Vorbild für viele Kapellen sein; solche, die mit ähnlicher Vielfalt und solche, die sich eine bestimmte Scheibe abschneiden wollen. Die einzelnen Bandmitglieder zeichnen sich durch ein hohes technisches Geschick aus und es kann angenommen werden, dass die Kreativität nicht nur aus einem Kopf, einer Feder stammen kann.
Was hat jetzt das Album zu bieten und warum gebe ich nach soviel Lobhudelei bloss acht von zehn möglichen Punkten? Also erstens sind acht von zehn Punkten ein sehr gutes Resultat und zweitens hat das Album aus meiner Sicht eine „Schwäche“. Dazu weiter unten mehr.
„Oft scheint es, als verliefe alles in Phasen, in wiederkehrenden, langsam voran mäandernden Zyklen. Auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen – persönlich, gesellschaftlich, kosmisch – dreht sich das Album thematisch und textlich um diesen Grundgedanken, dabei stets der Musik folgend.“
Dieses Zitat aus den Promounterlagen beschreibt das Album ziemlich gut, zeigt die Komplexität und den Anspruch auf, den die Band an ihre Musik und an ihre Fans stellt. BSR liefert auch auf dem neuen Album keine einfache „Headbanger“-Kost. Mal kracht es, mal wird es episch, manchmal auch beides. Insgesamt ist das Album reifer als frühere Werke, detailreifer, insgesamt runder und stimmiger.
Der Fan der Münsteraner kommt auf jeden Fall voll auf seine Kosten, sei es bei den treibenden Songs wie dem Titeltrack WHBHB oder dem an BOWIE erinnernden „Beautiful“. Verschiedene Tracks – wie etwa „Fear No More“ erinnern mich an die Musik meiner Jugend, an die Psychedelic Bands der Siebziger und frühen Achtziger. Dass bei fast jedem Track Bezüge zu anderen Bands hergestellt werden können, hat vor allem zwei Gründe – einerseits die Breite der Genreelemente, andererseits die hohe, musikalische und technische Qualität – die Jungs können es einfach.
Gibt es Hänger oder Anspieltipps? Für mich war diese Frage schwer, kaum, nicht zu beantworten. Und hier sind wir bei einem Grund für „nur 8 Punkte“ – irgendwie klingt alles sehr ähnlich, fehlen mir Ecken und Kanten, Überraschungen. Man kann das positiv formuliert auch Konsistenz nennen, mir fehlt einfach etwas. Wie gesagt, das ist Jammern auf hohem Niveau.
Und das andere ist; das Album ist reifer und ausgefeilter, aber das macht allein keine Faszination aus. Gerade eine Band, welche sich von Stil her dermassen breit aufstellt, hat Potenzial für „positive Ausrutscher“, für Experimente, welche den Zuhörer herausfordern. So gesehen hätte ich mir nach vier Jahren etwas mehr Mut gewünscht.
Fazit
Wie mehrfach gesagt, BSR legen hier ein sehr gutes Album vor, kreativ, technisch und musikalisch hochstehend und abwechslungsreich. Mir persönliche fehlen etwas Ecken und Kanten, Überraschungen. Aber wie gesagt, das Album wird nicht nur die Fans erfreuen, sondern jeden Musikliebhaber, der anspruchsvollen Rock mag, der gerne genau hinhört – eben wie auch mich. Die Empfehlung kann deshalb nur lauten – holt euch diese Scheibe!

Once briefly at the beginning – the BLACK SPACE RIDERS are not to be confused with the THIN LIZZY successor troupe BLACK STAR RIDERS! Genre fireworks on one side, hard rock with history on the other.
BSR are JE for vocals, guitar, electronics, keyboard and organ, SEB also for vocals as well as electronics, SLI on guitar, C.RIP on drums and MEI on bass. What the guys have been performing since 2008 is difficult for success and demanding for the audience – their music is enormously diverse and sophisticated. The above enumeration of genre references is quite realistic, as influences would probably have to list a whole battery of bands. At the same time, the band can be a model for many bands; those with similar diversity and those who want to take a certain leaf out of their book. The individual band members are characterized by a high technical skill and it can be assumed that the creativity can not come only from one head, one pen.
What does the album have to offer now and why do I give only eight out of ten possible points after so much adulation? Well, first of all, eight out of ten points is a very good result and secondly, the album has a „weakness“ from my point of view. More about that below.
„Often it seems as if everything goes in phases, in recurring, slowly meandering cycles. On different levels – personal, social, cosmic – the album thematically and lyrically revolves around this basic idea, always following the music.“
This quote from the promo materials describes the album pretty well, showing the complexity and the demand that the band places on their music and on their fans. BSR also delivers on the new album no simple „headbanger“ fare. Sometimes it crashes, sometimes it becomes epic, sometimes both. Overall, the album is more mature than previous works, more detailed, more rounded overall and more coherent.
The fan of the Münsteraner comes in any case fully at his expense, whether with the driving songs such as the title track WHBHB or the „Beautiful“ reminiscent of BOWIE. Various tracks – such as „Fear No More“ remind me of the music of my youth, the psychedelic bands of the seventies and early eighties. The fact that almost every track can be made references to other bands, has two main reasons – on the one hand, the breadth of genre elements, on the other hand, the high, musical and technical quality – the guys can simply do it.
Are there any hangers or Anspieltipps? For me, this question was difficult, hardly, not to answer. And here we are at a reason for „only 8 points“ – somehow everything sounds very similar, I lack corners and edges, surprises. You can call that positively formulated also consistency, I simply lack something. As I said, this is complaining on a high level.
And the other is; the album is more mature and sophisticated, but that alone does not make a fascination. Especially a band, which is so broad in style, has potential for „positive slips“, for experiments, which challenge the listener
Conclusion
As said several times, BSR present here a very good album, creative, technically and musically high and varied. Personally, I miss something corners and edges, surprises. But as I said, the album will please not only the fans, but every music lover who likes sophisticated rock, who likes to listen carefully – just like me. The recommendation can therefore only be – get this disc!
