Die Band
ATTIKA sind alles ausser Newcomer. Die amerikanischen Metaller treiben ihr Unwesen seit den frühen Achtzigern des letzten Jahrhunderts. Damals gehörten sie zur Speerspitze des Metal von jenseits des Atlantik. Heute sind sie leider etwas in Vergessenheit geraten – zu Unrecht.
ATTIKA sind Robert Van War am Mikrofon, Joe Longobardi spielt eine mehr als gepflegte Gitarre, Jeff Patelski spielt Rockdrums genau so, wie sie sein müssen und Scott Miller liefert den Bass.

Das Album
„When Heroes Fall“ ist wie gesagt kein neues Album. Bereits Ende der Achtziger bastelten die Jungs daraus eine Kassette, also eines jener in Hartplastik verpackten Magnetbänder, sie sich gerne aufwickelten und schweineteuer waren. 1991 legte ihre Plattenfirma die Scheibe dann als hypermoderne CD auf. Das Album schlug damals gelinde gesagt ein wie eine Bombe – ATTIKA bildeten so etwas wie die Gegenbewegung zu Deathmetal, Punk oder Grunge.
Heute erhält das Album Bedeutung, weil es einerseits wieder den Geschmack der Zeit trifft und es andererseits die Qualitätsansprüche an Musik und Aufnahmetechnik erfüllt. Remastert wurde die Scheibe von Robert Romagna, zusätzlich zu den Originaltracks enthält es den Bonussong „Silent Rage“ als Livetrack.
Insgesamt ist und bleibt das Album ein ziemlich fettes Brett. Was mich persönlich weghaut – die Saitenarbeit des Joe Longobardi. Wahrscheinlich ist der Junge Nachkomme eines italienischen Mafiaclans – jedenfalls brettert er dermassen los, als wäre er auf der Flucht vor der Polizei.
Was mir schwer fällt; ich finde keine eigentlichen Anspieltipps. Das Niveau sämtlicher Tracks ist hoch, weder fällt ein Song ab noch sticht einer besonders hervor. Für mich sind die eigentlichen Anspieltipps jene Passagen, in welcher Gitarrrenheld Longobardi in die Saiten greift und Soli, Licks oder Riffs erster Güte produziert.

„When Heroes Fall“ is not a new album. Already at the end of the eighties the guys made a cassette out of it, so one of those hard plastic packed magnetic tapes, they liked to wind themselves up and were expensive as pigs. In 1991 their record company released the record as a hypermodern CD. To put it mildly, the album hit like a bomb – ATTIKA formed something like a counter-movement to Deathmetal, Punk or Grunge.
Today, the album takes on meaning because it meets the taste of the times on the one hand and fulfils the quality demands of music and recording technology on the other. The album was remastered by Robert Romagna, in addition to the original tracks it contains the bonus song „Silent Rage“ as a live track.
All in all the album is and remains a pretty fat board. What personally blows me away – the string work of Joe Longobardi. Probably the boy is a descendant of an Italian mafia clan – at least he’s getting so excited as if he were fleeing from the police.
What’s hard for me is that I can’t find any real hints. The level of all tracks is high, neither a song falls off nor one stands out. For me, the actual playing tips are the passages in which guitar hero Longobardi reaches into the strings and produces solos, licks or riffs of the first order.
