Also, Swiss/International Outfit – was zum Teufel bedeutet das? Da wäre einmal Sänger Jordan Cutajar; der stammt aus Malta. Rhythmusgitarrist Andy La Morte und Basser Jan Thomas stammen aus der Schweiz, Leadgitarrero Michael Piranio sowie Drummer Benjamin Mann kommen aus dem grossen Kanton. Zudem hat die Band für dieses Album noch Gastmusiker aufgeboten; Sänger Jonas Ambühl aus der Schweiz, Basser Albert Bell ebenfalls aus Malta, Sologitarrist Mick Jelinic stammt aus Australien und mit Sologitarrist Benjamin schliesst sich der Kreis zurück in die Schweiz wieder.

Soweit zur Statistik, aber was taugt das Album? Musikalisch liegen wir hier im Bereich harter Hardrock oder etwas weniger harter Heavy Metal. Dieses Zwischending ist spannend. Ich kenne die früheren Werke nur flüchtig, die neue Scheibe scheint aber härter als auch schon geworden zu sein. Meine Meinung? Drums, Bass und über gewisse Strecken würde ich auch die Gitarren als metallisch bezeichnen. Was ganz klar Hardrock ist, sind die Stimmen sowohl von Frontmann Jordan Cutajar als auch von Gastsänger Jonas Ambühl. Interessant – Jordan Cutajar klingt ein wenig wie Ozzy in seinen frühen Jahren. Beide Stimmen sind sehr druckvoll, bedienen die Hardrock-Stimm-Obergeschosse und überzeugen durch Charisma.
Mich beeindruckt bei dem Album insbesondere die Gitarrenarbeit. Da sind diese jaulenden Teile, diese gequält und doch glücklich klingenden Sechssaiter. Sie prägen das Album, sind intensiv und so, wie ich sie mag – eine gute Balance zwischen schnellen, technischen anspruchsvollen Parts und den eher „leiseren Passagen“, in denen der einzelne Ton im Zentrum steht.
Mit „Fortress Of Home“ liefern die Jungs auch, was zu einem guten Hardrock-Album gehört – eine amtliche Ballade.

Fazit

„Almost Holy“ hat mich nicht auf den ersten Moment gefesselt – das Album verdient es, sich auf die Facetten, die Details einzulassen. Dann eröffnet sich ein starkes Rockalbum, das viele Geschmäcker bedient und zu den stärkeren Scheiben gehört, welche dieses Jahr über meinen Harddisk gehuscht sind. Aber halt – für einmal gab es wieder eine physische CD- nice!

So, Swiss/International Outfit – what the hell does that mean? There’s singer Jordan Cutajar, who comes from Malta. Rhythm guitarist Andy La Morte and bassist Jan Thomas are from Switzerland, lead guitarist Michael Piranio and drummer Benjamin Mann come from the big canton. The band has also called on guest musicians for this album; singer Jonas Ambühl is from Switzerland, bassist Albert Bell is also from Malta, solo guitarist Mick Jelinic comes from Australia and solo guitarist Benjamin brings the band full circle back to Switzerland.

So much for the statistics, but what is the album good for? Musically, we are in the area of hard hard rock or slightly less hard heavy metal. This in-between is exciting. I’m only vaguely familiar with the earlier works, but the new disc seems to be heavier than ever. My opinion? The drums, bass and, for certain stretches, I would also describe the guitars as metallic. What is clearly hard rock are the voices of both frontman Jordan Cutajar and guest singer Jonas Ambühl. Interesting – Jordan Cutajar sounds a bit like Ozzy in his early years. Both voices are very punchy, cover the upper echelons of hard rock vocals and impress with their charisma.
I am particularly impressed by the guitar work on the album. There are these howling parts, these tormented and yet happy-sounding six-stringers. They characterise the album, are intense and just the way I like them – a good balance between fast, technically demanding parts and the rather „quieter passages“ in which the individual note takes centre stage.
With „Fortress Of Home“, the boys also deliver what belongs on a good hard rock album – an official ballad.

Conclusion

„Almost Holy“ didn’t captivate me at first listen – the album deserves to be savoured in its facets and details. Then a strong rock album opens up that caters to many tastes and is one of the stronger discs that have flitted across my hard drive this year. But wait – for once there was a physical CD again – nice!
