Volle Power! WINGS OF STEEL – „Winds Of Time“ am 17. Oktober

Mal wieder etwas old school Hardrock/Metal gefällig? Wer es gerne kompakt, hart und trotzdem melodisch mag, dürfte mit dem zweiten Album der Band aus Los Angeles gut bedient sein.

Das aktuelle Lineup der Truppe aus der kalifornischen Sonnenstube besteht aus Leo Unnermark (vocals), Parker Halub (lead guitar), Stefan John-Bailet (rhythm guitar), Mathieu Trobec (bass), und Marcel Binder (drums). Die Band besteht seit 2019, hat 2022 ihre erste EP „Wings Of Steel“ und 2023 ihr erstes Album „Gates Of Twilight“. Jetzt liefern sie ihren zweiten Volllänger – und der hat es in sich.

Mit „Winds Of Time“ liefert die Truppe das, was man klassischen 70er und 80er Hardrock oder eben Heavy Metal nennt. Also genauer; da gibt es eine Art Hardrockbasis gespickt mit vielen Metalelementen – oder umgekehrt. Der Sound lässt sich definitiv nicht in eine einzige Genreschublade stecken. Was man aber sagen kann – Genre hin oder her, das ist ein richtig gutes Album, fetter Sound und enormer Druck auf die Gehörgänge.

Nur gerade acht Songs warten auf diesem Album darauf, entdeckt zu werden. Dass weniger manchmal mehr ist, beweisen die West Coast Rocker eindrücklich.
Eigentlich wollte ich mich mal wieder auf diese „Anspieltipps“-Sache einlassen, hat aber nicht geklappt. Klar, die Band hat die drei Clips in diesem Beitrag vorab veröffentlicht und scheint ihnen damit viel Gewicht beizumessen. Trotzdem gibt es auf dem Album keine qualitative Zweiklassengesellschaft.
Zu diesen Videos brauche ich also sowieso nichts zu erzählen, weil ihr ja die Videos hier ansehen/anhören könnt…

Dann wären da weitere Riffgewitter wie die Powermetal-Hymne „Saints And Sinners“ – mit einer Stimme, wie sie DRAGONFORCE guttun würde. Leo Unnermark hat wirklich eine geile, aussergewöhnliche Ansammlung von Stimmbändern.
Mit „Crying“ findet auch eine anständige Powerballade ihren Platz auf dem Album. Das ist jetzt nicht der absolute Hookliner, die Paarung sensationeller Gitarrenarbeit mit der enorm charismatischen Stimme macht den Track trotzdem zu einen wuchtigen Song.
„To Die In Holy War“ ist so etwas wie ein Midtempotrack mit schnelleren Passagen, ebenfalls volle Kanne vorwärts.
Bei „Lights Go Out“ wird es dann doomig. Also nicht so, wie Doom als dunkler, schleppender Metalstil definiert wird, sondern als Doom Osbournescher Prägung; etwas schleppend, etwas tiefer, leicht schwermütig – grandios.

Fazit

„Winds Of Time“ ist eines der bisher besten Hardrock- und Metalalben des Jahres. Aussergewöhnliche Shredarbeit an den Sechssaitern, ein präzises und druckvolles Bollwerk an Bass und Drums und eine überragende Leistung am Mikrofon.
Wer sich im angetönten Genrerahmen wohlfühlt, sollte dieses Album seiner CD-Sammlung einverleiben. Unbedingt kaufen!

The current lineup of the band from sunny California consists of Leo Unnermark (vocals), Parker Halub (lead guitar), Stefan John-Bailet (rhythm guitar), Mathieu Trobec (bass), and Marcel Binder (drums). The band has been around since 2019, released their first EP „Wings Of Steel“ in 2022 and their first album „Gates Of Twilight“ in 2023. Now they’re delivering their second full-length album – and it’s a doozy.

With „Winds Of Time“, the band delivers what is known as classic 70s and 80s hard rock or heavy metal. More precisely, there is a kind of hard rock base peppered with many metal elements – or vice versa. The sound definitely cannot be pigeonholed into a single genre. But what can be said is that, genre aside, this is a really good album with a rich sound and enormous impact on the ear.

There are just eight songs waiting to be discovered on this album. The West Coast rockers impressively prove that less is sometimes more.
I actually wanted to get back into this „recommended tracks“ thing, but it didn’t work out. Sure, the band released the three clips in this article in advance and seems to attach a lot of importance to them. Nevertheless, there is no two-tier society in terms of quality on the album.

Then there are more riff storms like the power metal anthem „Saints And Sinners“ – with a voice that would suit DRAGONFORCE. Leo Unnermark really has an amazing, extraordinary set of vocal cords.
With „Crying“, a decent power ballad also finds its place on the album. It’s not the absolute hookliner, but the combination of sensational guitar work and the enormously charismatic voice still makes the track a powerful song.
„To Die In Holy War“ is something of a mid-tempo track with faster passages, also full throttle forward.
„Lights Go Out“ then takes on a doom-like feel. Not in the sense that doom is defined as a dark, sluggish metal style, but rather in the style of Ozzy Osbourne; somewhat sluggish, somewhat deeper, slightly melancholic – magnificent.

Conclusion

„Winds Of Time“ is one of the best hard rock and metal albums of the year so far. Exceptional shredding on the six-string, a precise and powerful bulwark of bass and drums, and an outstanding performance on the microphone.
Anyone who feels at home in this genre should add this album to their CD collection. Definitely buy it!
