Live-Alben sind ja Ansichtssache – viele lieben sie, viele finden sie ein Unding. Klar ist, wer ein bestimmtes Konzert besucht hat, wird sich kaum das Livealbum dazu kaufen. Wer jedoch kein Live-Konzert der Band zu seinem Lieblingsalbum besuchen kann, für den sind Live-Alben eine Alternative.

Torsten Reichert am Bass, Andreas Lill an Schlagzeug und Percussion, Stephan Lill an der Gitarre, Günter Werno am Keyboard und Andreas Kuntz am Mikrofon, das ist die Band, welche seit 1986 eine eindrückliche Duftmarke im Prog-Sektor hinterlassen haben – international. Der durchschlagende Erfolg in Deutschland blieb bisher weitgehend aus. Das Quintett besteht seit 1986 in unverändertem Lineup. Die Musiker, insbesondere Sänger Andreas Kuntz, haben sich in ihrer Karriere immer wieder auch im Theater oder im Musical engagiert, spielten mit Symphonieorchestern.

„Live And Immortal“ wurde am 30. Dezember 2016 in Kaiserslautern, aufgenommen, dort legten VANDEN PLAS eine epische Performance vor einem begeisterten Publikum hin. Der Grossteil der Setlist basiert auf den beiden „Chronicles Of The Immortals“-Alben (2013 bzw. 2014) und enthält zudem Tracks, die noch nie live gespielt worden waren, wie das atmosphärische „Scarlet Flower Fields“ und „The Final Murder“. Letzteres entpuppt sich als fesselndes 11-Minuten-Monster. Ausserdem erwarten die Fans All-Time-Favoriten aus dem Repertoire der Band wie „Holes In The Sky“, „Iodic Rain“, „Postcard To God“ oder „Christ 0“.

Da es sich um ein Livealbum handelt, macht es keinen Sinn, sich über einzelne Tracks auszulassen oder gar Anspieltipps zu benennen. Es geht vielmehr darum zu beurteilen, inwiefern das Album ein Liveevent ersetzen kann. Es kann – abgesehen natürlich davon, dass der Bier- und Schweissduft der Venue fehlt. Ebenso das Gefühl, in einer Menge an Fans wie in einer grossen Familie aufgehoben zu sein, nachdem man das Anstehen und die Ticketkontrollen hinter sich gebracht hat.
Es kann aber trotzdem, weil es in einer Hammerqualität aufgenommen und abgemischt wurde. Der Sound ist knackig und klar, fein abgestimmt und detailreich und trägt damit der Komplexität der Musik Rechnung – schliesslich ist Prog nicht einfach „hau-drauf-Sound“.

Fazit

„Live And Immortal“ ergänzt jede CD-Sammlung, insbesondere natürlich jene von VANDEN PLAS Fans, aber auch jene der Freunde von Live-Alben. Nicht zuletzt repräsentiert das Album ein Stück Musikgeschichte, es zu kaufen, ist also bestimmt kein Fehler.

Live albums are a matter of opinion – many love them, many find them an absurdity. It is clear, who has visited a certain concert, will hardly buy the live album to it. But for those who can’t attend a live concert of the band to their favorite album, live albums are an alternative.

Torsten Reichert on bass, Andreas Lill on drums and percussion, Stephan Lill on guitar, Günter Werno on keyboards and Andreas Kuntz on microphone, this is the band, which since 1986 have left an impressive scent mark in the prog sector – internationally. The resounding success in Germany has so far remained largely absent. The quintet has existed in an unchanged lineup since 1986. The musicians, especially singer Andreas Kuntz, have also been involved in theater or musicals throughout their career, played with symphony orchestras.

„Live And Immortal“ was recorded on December 30, 2016 in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where VANDEN PLAS put on an epic performance in front of an enthusiastic audience. The majority of the setlist is based on the two „Chronicles Of The Immortals“ albums (2013 and 2014 respectively) and also includes tracks that had never been played live before, such as the atmospheric „Scarlet Flower Fields“ and „The Final Murder“. The latter turns out to be a captivating 11-minute monster. In addition, fans can expect all-time favorites from the band’s repertoire like „Holes In The Sky,“ „Iodic Rain,“ „Postcard To God“ and „Christ 0.“

Since this is a live album, it makes no sense to dwell on individual tracks or even to name play tips. It is rather a matter of judging to what extent the album can replace a live event. It can – apart from the fact that the smell of beer and sweat of the venue is missing, of course. As well as the feeling of being in a crowd of fans like in a big family, after you have passed the queue and ticket checks.
It can but still, because it was recorded and mixed in a hammer quality. The sound is crisp and clear, finely tuned and rich in detail, doing justice to the complexity of the music – after all, prog isn’t just „bang-for-the-buck sound.“

conclusion

„Live And Immortal“ complements every CD collection, especially those of VANDEN PLAS fans, of course, but also those of friends of live albums. Last but not least, the album represents a piece of music history, so buying it is certainly not a mistake.
