Brittney Slayes – Vocals, Scott Buchanan – Drums, Grant Truesdell – Guitar, Vocals, Andrew Kingsley – Guitar, Vocals und Nick Miller – Bass – das ist eine Hammertruppe, die Hammersound macht. Leider sieht man die Band viel zu selten in Europa. Diesen Sommer sind sie jedoch wieder unterwegs, zumindest auf verschiedenen Festivals (siehe weiter unten).
Es tummeln sich ja viele Bands im Teich, der sich Powermetal nennt. UTA sind meiner persönlichen Meinung nach einer der grössten Karpfen darin, weil die Truppe ein geniales Gesamtpaket sind. Klar, da stechen Fronterin Brittney Slayes und die Shredder an den Stromrudern heraus, die enorme Power und Kompaktheit der Band wäre ohne Bass und Drums so nicht machbar. Stark macht die Truppe ebenfalls, weil sie an Genregrenzen stösst, mäandert und sie überschreitet. Die Basis ist tatsächlich ein knackiger Powermetal, gleichzeitig bringen die Stimmen viel klassischen Heavymetal ein, gewisse Soundelemente kann man aber getrost dem Modern Metal zuordnen und Hardrock gibt es auch.
Das Album „Phantoma“, das hier vorliegt und heute erscheint, kommt nicht an meine persönlichen Favoriten „Time Stands Still“ von 2015 mit dem Hammertrack „Test Your Metal“ oder „Apex“ von 2017 mit „The Coward’s Way“ heran. Was Slayes besonders bei „test Your Metal“ stimmlich entfesselt, sucht seinesgleichen.
Und trotzdem, die neue Scheibe hat was, hat viel. Einer der Knaller ist der Titeltrack in Passwortmanier. Straight forward ohne Schnörkel, einfach Metal as Metal Can Be. Schnelle, präzise Drums, einer tragfähigen Bassline, knackiges Riffing und Slayes für einmal beinahe zurückhaltend – also ein wenig.
Bei „The Collective“ kriegt man schon beinahe den Eindruck, die Kanadier würden hier ein Ballade abliefern – die Hoffnung oder Angst verflüchtigt sich aber bereits nach ca. 30 Sekunden wieder. Hammer an dieser Nummer – die Gitarrensoli, Ton für Ton gesetzt, nicht spektakulär schnell, dafür episch und tragend.
Ebenfalls spannend ist „Gods In Decay“ – hier wird klar, was ich mit Hardrock meine. Nicht ganz so hart wie die restlichen Tracks, eher midtempo, zeigt der Track gut, dass die Band nicht „nur“ schredern kann und einmal mehr saubere Gitarrenarbeit leistet.
Mit „Give It Up Or Give It All“ liefert die Band dann doch noch eine Powerballade, erneut mit den bekannt faszinierenden Gitarren.
Fazit
Ich lasse es jetzt, jeden einzelnen Track zu loben. Mich interessiert an Alben ja eh immer der Gesamteindruck – sonst könnte ich auch Singles besprechen. „Phantoma“ ist schlicht ein geiles Album mit weitgehend harten Tönen, dazwischen aber immer wieder kleine Ruhepausen, während denen man etwas durchatmen kann. Kaufen? Kaufen!

Unfortunately, you see the band far too rarely in Europe. This summer, however, they are back on the road, at least at various festivals (see below).
There are a lot of bands in the pond that is called power metal. In my personal opinion, UTA are one of the biggest carp in it, because the band are a brilliant overall package. Of course, frontwoman Brittney Slayes and the shredders on the drums stand out, the enormous power and compactness of the band would not be possible without bass and drums. The band is also strong because it pushes, meanders and crosses genre boundaries. The basis is indeed crunchy power metal, while at the same time the vocals bring in a lot of classic heavy metal, but certain sound elements can be confidently categorised as modern metal and there is also hard rock.
The album „Phantoma“, which is available here and is being released today, doesn’t come close to my personal favourites „Time Stands Still“ from 2015 with the hammer track „Test Your Metal“ or „Apex“ from 2017 with „The Coward’s Way“. What Slayes unleashes vocally, especially on „Test Your Metal“, is unrivalled.
And yet, the new disc has something, a lot. One of the hits is the title track in password style. Straight forward without frills, simply metal as metal can be: fast, precise drums, a sustainable bassline, crisp riffing and Slayes almost restrained for once – a little.
With „The Collective“ you almost get the impression that the Canadians are delivering a ballad here – but the hope or fear evaporates again after about 30 seconds. The guitar solos, set note for note, aren’t spectacularly fast, but epic and carrying.
Also exciting is „Gods In Decay“ – here it becomes clear what I mean by hard rock. Not quite as hard as the other tracks, more mid-tempo, the track shows well that the band can do more than „just“ scream and once again delivers clean guitar work.
With „Give It Up Or Give It All“, the band then deliver a power ballad, once again with the familiar mesmerising guitars.
Conclusion
I’ll stop praising every single track now. I’m always interested in the overall impression of albums anyway – otherwise I could also review singles. „Phantoma“ is simply a great album with mostly hard sounds, but in between there are always little breaks where you can take a deep breath. Buy it? Buy it!
