THE REVENANTS – „Ghosts“ am 21.04.23

Zwei Instrumentalisten – die zugegebenermassen ziemlich viele Instrumente beitragen – und ein Sänger liefern ein genreübergreifendes Machwerk ab. Lohnt sich das Reinhören?

Sänger Michelle Darkness, bestens bekannt als Fronter von END OF GREEN – hat sich von den beiden italienischstämmigen Multiinstrumentalisten Fabiano Arganese | Guitars, Keys und Marc Ayerle | Guitars, Keys, Bass, Drums bequatschen lassen und gleich ein Doppelalbum mitgebaut. Was hat eine Band zu liefern, die sich an Fans von BILLY IDOL, ROXETTE und NASHVILLE wendet und dabei eine Prise HIM beiwürzt? Der Anspruch und die Fallhöhe sind auf jeden Fall schon einmal ziemlich hoch. Zudem zeugt es irgendwie von ziemlich grossen Eiern und überquellender Kreativität, auf sein Debut gleich 20 Tracks zu hauen.

Ich gebe zu, mich hat das Album schon nach dem ersten Mal hören im Sack gehabt, oder am Haken oder in seinen Fängen. Es ist einfach zu dreist, was die Jungs da raushauen. Nachdem der Opener „Ghosts“ irgendwo aus der Ecke TOM WAITS oder NICK CAVE oder THE BEAUTY OF GEMINA in die Gehörgänge rauscht, erschüttert der zweite Track meine Hörerwartung mit einer ziemlich poppigen Nummer „Into The Fire“. Hier würde ich den Bezug zu den populären Songs von BILLY IDOL sehen. Noch einen Schritt weiter – also weg vom klassischen Rock – bewegen wir uns mit „Emerald“ – funkiger Einstieg und dann quasi profilierter und knackiger Indie Rock, wenn es sowas überhaupt gibt.

Und so weiter, und so weiter – Ausloten der Grenzen von Track zu Track, keine Gnade für den Hörer – und die Hörerinnen und die Unentschiedenen und überhaupt. Was das kreative und in seiner Diversität schon beinahe anstrengende Werk zusammenhält, quasi den roten Faden macht – Mikrofonmann Michelle Darkness ist das verbindende Element, der rote Faden.
Ja, ich erspare es mir, jetzt auf jeden Track einzeln einzugehen. Erwähnen möchte ich natürlich noch meine Lieblinge. Beispielsweise die faszinierende Powerballade „Disclosures“ – ein tragender Hammertrack – ich liebe den! Dasselbe kann ich von „The End IS Black“ sagen. Ebenfalls geil; das rockigste Stück Musik auf dem Album; „Roofless“ knallt dir Südstaaten Bluesrock in die Gehörgänge. Davon hätte ich mir mehr gewünscht! Als letztes hat mich Track Nummer 20 ebenfalls gepackt, „Worlds Collide“ ist grossartig und schliesst den Kreis zum Titeltrack „Ghosts“.

Fazit

„Ghosts“ von THE REVENANTS ist schlicht ein grossartiges Album. Einen kleinen Abzug mache ich in der B-Note, weil ich mir noch etwas mehr Härte gewünscht hätte, zumindest noch den einen oder anderen Song ähnlich wie „Roofless“. Das ist aber Jammern auf hoherm Niveau und meine Empfehlung ist klar; kaufen, denn solche Bands müssen unterstützt werden.

In addition, it somehow testifies to pretty big balls and overflowing creativity to hit on his debut immediately 20 tracks.

I admit, the album had me already after the first time listening in the bag, or on the hook or in its clutches. It’s just too brazen, what the guys throw out there. After the opener „Ghosts“ somewhere from the corner of TOM WAITS or NICK CAVE or THE BEAUTY OF GEMINA rushes into the auditory canals, the second track shakes my listening expectation with a pretty poppy number „Into The Fire“. Here I would see the reference to the popular songs of BILLY IDOL. One step further – so away from classic rock – we move with „Emerald“ – funky entry and then quasi profiled and crisp indie rock, if there is such a thing at all.
And so on, and so on – exploring the boundaries from track to track, no mercy for the listener – and the listeners and the undecided and in general. What holds the creative and in its diversity already almost exhausting work together, makes the red thread, so to speak – microphone man Michelle Darkness is the connecting element, the red thread.
Yes, I spare myself to go into each track individually now. Of course I would like to mention my favorites. For example the fascinating power ballad „Disclosures“ – a carrying hammer track – I love that one! I can say the same about „The End IS Black“. Also cool; the most rocking piece of music on the album; „Roofless“ slams southern blues rock into your ear canals. I would have liked more of that! Lastly, track number 20 also grabbed me, „Worlds Collide“ is great and closes the circle to the title track „Ghosts“.

Conclusion

„Ghosts“ by THE REVENANTS is simply a great album. I make a small deduction in the B grade, because I would have liked a little more hardness, at least one or two songs similar to „Roofless“. But this is complaining on a high level and my recommendation is clear; buy, because such bands must be supported.
