THE HALO EFFECT – besser spät als nie…

Jawohl, das neue Album „March Of The Unheard“ der Melodic Deathmetaller THE HALO EFFECT ist bereits seit knapp zwei Wochen auf dem Markt – jetzt verliere ich doch einige Worte darüber.

Dass die Band auf sehr hohem Niveau unterwegs ist, versteht sich wie von selbst, besteht sie doch aus aktuellen und ehemaligen Mitgliedern von IN FLAMES.
Gegründet vom Gitarristen Niclas Engelin, der seit 2010 Mitglied von In Flames ist, aber seit 2019 nicht mehr mit der Band auftritt, kam schnell Sänger Mikael Stanne dazu, er hatte das Debütalbum „Lunar Strain“ von IN FLAMES eingesungen, war aber nie ein festes Bandmitglied. Kurze Zeit später meldete sich der Bassist Peter Iwers, der von 1997 bis 2017 bei IN FLAMES spielte. Komplettiert wurde die Besetzung durch den Gitarristen Jesper Strömblad, der im Jahre 1990 Gründungsmitglied von IN FLAMES war und die Gruppe im Jahre 2010 verließ, und dem Schlagzeuger Daniel Svensson, der von 1998 bis 2015 bei IN FLAMES spielte.

Soviel zur Truppe, doch was bietet das Album? Einerseits ist es ein würdiger Nachfolger des eh schon starken Debuts „Days Of The Lost“, andererseits eine moderne Interpretation des Melodic Death Metal, wie ihn bisher am ehesten ARCH ENEMY bieten.
Die Puristen mögen enttäuscht sein und monieren, dass zu viele Einflüsse von Stannes Stammband DARK TRANQUILITY ins Album eingeflossen sind. Ich sehe es anders; das Album ist mit seiner Melodiösität eher eine moderne Interpretation der klassischen Gotenborg School. Dabei gibt es etwa Elemente, welche man sonst eher von den oben erwähnten ARCH ENEMY kennt – Growls werden ergänzt durch Klargesang, welcher oft die stimmlichen Fähigkeiten entlarvt – Stanne besteht hier ausgezeichnet, braucht sich definitiv nicht zu verstecken. Neben den sehr melodischen Tracks wie „What We Become“ und „This Curse Of Silence“ bietet das Album diverse Bretter, welche jene Kritiker Lügen strafen, die dem Album zu wenig Härte attestieren. So erledigt „Detonate“ seinem Titel gemäss seinen Job, „A Death That Becomes Us“ liegt zwar ein etwas ruhigeres Tempo zugrunde, die Intensität bläst die aber wie eine steife, nordische Brise ins Gesicht.
Ach ja, da wäre dann noch „Forever Astray“, viel Power gekoppelt mit der Klarstimme des Frontmannes sowie der Titeltrack „March Of The Unheard“, der die unbestritten hochgradigen Qualitäten der GItarrenarbeit abbilden. Diese ist eines der starken Markenzeichen nicht nur der Band, sondern insbesondere des gesamten Albums. Niclas Engelin und Jesper Strömblad zeigen hier, wie gutes Zusammenspiel aussieht – so bekannt etwa von Michael Amott und Jeff Loomis, der ARCH ENEMY leider 2023 verlassen hat.

Fazit

„March Of The Unheard“ ist definitiv das bisher beste Melodic Death Metal Album des Jahres und wird auch bis Ende Jahr an der Spitze meiner persönlichen Bestenliste stehen. So kann moderner Melodic Death klingen, die nicht im Gegensatz zur klassischen Göteborger Schule steht, sondern sie weiterentwickelt – kaufen versteht sich von slebst!

It goes without saying that the band performs at a very high level, as it consists of current and former members of IN FLAMES.
Founded by guitarist Niclas Engelin, who has been a member of In Flames since 2010 but has not performed with the band since 2019, the band was quickly joined by singer Mikael Stanne, who sang on IN FLAMES‘ debut album “Lunar Strain” but was never a permanent member of the band. A short time later, bassist Peter Iwers, who played with IN FLAMES from 1997 to 2017, joined the band. The line-up was completed by guitarist Jesper Strömblad, who was a founding member of IN FLAMES in 1990 and left the band in 2010, and drummer Daniel Svensson, who played with IN FLAMES from 1998 to 2015.

So much for the band, but what does the album offer? On the one hand, it is a worthy successor to the already strong debut ‘Days Of The Lost’, while on the other hand it is a modern interpretation of melodic death metal, as previously best offered by ARCH ENEMY. 
Purists may be disappointed and criticise that too many influences from Stanne’s regular band DARK TRANQUILITYhave been incorporated into the album. I see it differently; with its melodiousness, the album is more of a modern interpretation of the classic Gotenborg School. There are elements that are otherwise more familiar from the aforementioned ARCH ENEMY – growls are complemented by clear vocals, which often expose the vocal abilities – Stanne is excellent here and definitely doesn’t need to hide. In addition to the very melodic tracks such as ‘What We Become’ and ‘This Curse Of Silence’, the album offers various planks that prove those critics wrong who say the album lacks toughness. ‘Detonate’ does its job according to its title, “A Death That Becomes Us” is based on a somewhat calmer tempo, but the intensity blows like a stiff Nordic breeze in your face.
Oh yes, there is also ‘Forever Astray’, a lot of power coupled with the clear voice of the frontman, as well as the title track ‘March Of The Unheard’, which shows the undisputed high quality of the guitar work. This is one of the strong trademarks not only of the band, but especially of the entire album. Niclas Engelin and Jesper Strömblad show what good teamwork looks like here – as known from Michael Amott and Jeff Loomis, who unfortunately left ARCH ENEMY in 2023.

Conclusion

‘March Of The Unheard’ is definitely the best melodic death metal album of the year so far and will remain at the top of my personal favourites list until the end of the year. This is what modern melodic death can sound like, which is not in contrast to the classic Gothenburg school, but develops it further – buy it goes without saying!
