SUZI QUATRO – ein Teufelsweib!

Da könnten sich so manche jungen Rockerinnen und Rocker eine Scheibe abschneiden – SUZI QUATRO veröffentlicht mit siebzig Jahren ein neues Album – und wie!

Also, da kommt wieder einmal die Frage auf, ob das gendermässig okay ist, wenn man behauptet, eine Frau hätte Eier – Suzan Kay Quatro hat sie definitiv!

Während andere Frauen – und Männer – ihr beschauliches Rentner- und Grosseltern dasein geniessen, tourt die Powerfrau durch die Welt und haut eben wieder einmal ein Album raus, das sich gewaschen hat.
Zur Erinnerung; das ist die Rockröhre und Bassistin, die seit ihrem vierzehnten Altersjahr auf der Bühne steht und der Welt Hammertracks wie „Can The Can“ geliefert hat oder „48 Crash“. Dann hat sie nebenbei Chris Norman von SMOKIE geadelt, indem sie mit ihm die Ballade „Stumblin’In“ veröffentlicht hat.
Suzi Quatro ist auch deshalb ein Phänomen, weil sie mithalf, den Frauen den Weg in die Rockszene zu ebnen. Gemeinsam mit anderen Rockerinnen wie Joan Jett oder Pat Benatar liess sie es bereits in den Siebzigern krachen. Die „kleine“ Frau wuchs musikalisch deutlich über ihre körperliche Grösse hinaus – und bis heute traut sie sich, im knappen Lederoutfit die Bühne zu rocken. Seit 1971 lebt und arbeitet Suzi Quatro in England oder Hamburg.

Mit „The Devil In Me“ liefert Quatro ihr neues und zwölftes Studioalbum ab – das notabene mit zwölf Tracks bestückt ist. Das Album bietet eine musikalische Breite, die sich üblicherweise nur Musiker und Musikerinnen trauen, welche sich schon längst bewiesen haben, keinen Genregrenzen mehr verpflichtet sind – ohne damit Fans zu verlieren. Bestes Beispiel ist der Weihnachtssong „My Heart Ans Soul“.
Dass sie aber auch ganz anders kann – nämlich rockig wie eh und je – beweist sie etwa bei „I Sold My Soul“, einem Track, der deutliche Anleihen beim Punk genommen hat. Oder sie spielt Blues, der durchaus auch von einer schwarzen Musikerin stammen könnte, „Isolation Blues“ steht dafür..

Mit „Motor City Riders“ hat sie auch einen Umtempo-Song als Hommage an ihre Heimatstadt Detroit eingespielt. Mir persönlich gefällt auf dem Album der groovige Song „Betty Who“ sehr gut – Power und Drive mit einer eingängigen Hookline. Der Track hat durchaus Hitparadenpotenziel – und zwar im positiven Sinn. „You Can’t Dream It“ wiederum steht für den „straight ahead „-Rock, für den Quatro seit über fünfundfünfzig Jahren steht. Wie viele Jungs in meinem Alter damals in die Sängerin verknallt waren, kann ich nur mutmassen – war ich es auch ein klein wenig? Wahrscheinlich hätte ich es damals nicht zugegeben…

Fazit

„The Devil In Me“ ist Programm und das reife Werk einer Musikerin, die ihr Leben lang nichts anderes wollte, als auf der Bühne zu stehen. Damit hat sie auch ihren Sohn Richard Tuckey angesteckt, der das Album gemeinsam mit ihr produziert hat. Ich kann das Album nur empfehlen, wer sich das nicht kauft ist selber schuld!

So, once again the question comes up whether it’s okay gender-wise to claim that a woman has balls – Suzan Kay Quatro definitely has them!

While other women – and men – are enjoying their tranquil retirement and grandparenthood, the power woman is touring the world and has just released another album that is quite something.
Just to remind you, this is the rock singer and bass player who has been on stage since she was fourteen years old and who has delivered hammer tracks like „Can The Can“ or „48 Crash“ to the world. Then, along the way, she ennobled Chris Norman of SMOKIE by releasing the ballad „Stumblin‘ In“ with him.
Suzy Quatro is also a phenomenon because she helped pave the way for women in the rock scene. Together with other female rockers such as Joan Jett or Pat Benatar, she already let it rip in the seventies. Musically, the „small“ woman clearly outgrew her physical size – and to this day she dares to rock the stage in a skimpy leather outfit. Since 1971, Suzy Quatro has lived and worked in England and Hamburg.

With „The Devil In Me“ Quatro delivers their new and twelfth studio album – which, nota bene, is equipped with twelve tracks. The album offers a musical breadth that usually only musicians who have long since proven themselves and are no longer bound by genre boundaries dare to offer – without losing fans. The best example is the Christmas song „My Heart Ans Soul“.
But she can also do something completely different – as rocky as ever – as she proves with „I Sold My Soul“, a track that clearly borrows from punk. Or she plays blues that could also come from a black musician, „Isolation Blues“ is a case in point.

With „Motor City Riders“ she also recorded an uptempo song as a tribute to her hometown Detroit. Personally, I really like the groovy song „Betty Who“ on the album – power and drive with a catchy hookline. The track definitely has hit parade potential – in a positive sense. „You Can’t Dream It“ on the other hand stands for the „straight ahead“ rock that Quatro has stood for for over fifty-five years. How many boys my age had a crush on the singer back then, I can only guess – was it also me a little bit? I probably wouldn’t have admitted it back then…

Conclusion

„The Devil In Me“ is the programme and the mature work of a musician who has wanted nothing more than to be on stage all her life. She has also infected her son Richard Tuckey, who produced the album together with her. I can only recommend the album, if you don’t buy it, it’s your own fault!
