FEUERSCHWANZ, wer kennt diese deutschen Mittelalter-Metaller aus dem Raum Erlangen nicht? Sie machen mittlerweile nicht mehr nur Mittelaltermärkte unsicher sondern spielen längst auch die grossen Festivals. Sie parodieren die Mittelalterszene, machen sich lustig darüber und stecken doch auch mittendrin.

FEUERSCHWANZ sind Hauptmann Feuerschwanz (Gesang, Akustik-Gitarre), Johanna von der Vögelweide alias Stephanie Pracht (Geige, Drehleier), Hans der Aufrechte alias Hans Platz (E-Gitarre), Prinz R. Hodenherz III alias Benjamin Metzner (Akustik-Gitarre, Flöten, Rauschpfeife, Dudelsack, Gesang), Jarne Hodinsson alias Jan Jamaszyk (E-Bass), Rollo H. Schönhaar alias Rolf Hering (Schlagzeug), Mieze Musch-Musch (Performance & Tanz) und Mieze Myu alias Jenny Diehl (Performance, Tanz, Harfe).

Das Album? „Todsünden“ ist der absolute Hammer! Wieso? Das braucht etwas mehr Zeit und eine Betrachtung aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln. Zuerst die Geschichte mit den Eiern. Die braucht man nämlich, wenn man sich auf einen Schlag die Fangemeinden von AMON AMARTH, ABBA, DIE TOTEN HOSEN, GHOST, SABATON, EUROPE und einiger mehr zu Feinden machen will. Als Support von MANOWAR werden die Deutschen definitiv nicht gebucht werden – da versteht Joey De Mayo wohl definitiv keinen Spass. Also, Eier haben die Mädels und Jungs. Check!

Dann die Auswahl. „Gimme, Gimme, Gimme“ oder „Hier Kommt Alex“, „Engel“, „Warriors Of The World United“ und „Twilight Of The Thunder God“ – keine zweitklassigen B-Single-Titel, sondern gleich die grossen Hits der jeweiligen Bands. Hauptmann Feuerschwanz, Johanna von der Vögelweide und ihre Kumpane haben Fantasie und können das bereits eingegangene Risiko damit noch einmal toppen. Check!

Dann wäre da noch die Auswahl der gecoverten Künstler. Dass sich eine Metalband andere Metalbands vornimmt, ist einigermassen naheliegend. Die konnten sie zumindest auf dem einen oder anderen Festival mit einigen Bier bestechen oder vorwarnen. Von AMON AMARTH, SABATON, POWERWOLF oder GHOST brauchen sie also nichts zu befürchten haben. Der BLOODHOUND GANG werden sie kaum über den Weg laufen, die Schnittmenge an gemeinsamen Konzerten oder Festivals dürfte relativ klein sein. ED SHEERAN? Der hat erst kürzlich auch Metalsound gemacht, also dürfen sie auch umgekehrt.
Weniger naheliegend aber ebenfalls keine Gefahr; SEEED sind kein Problem, die Reggae-aner sind eh dauernd bekifft. THE WEEKND kann man auch abhaken, der wird vor den schwer bewaffneten Mittelalter-Schergen Angst bekommen und das Weite suchen. RAMMSTEIN stehen über der Sache, O-ZONE sind froh um etwas Publicity, ebenso wie EUROPE. DIE ÄRZTE und DEICHKIND – keine Ahnung, wohl aber auch kein Problem. Und ABBA – die sind ungefährlich, weil sie wahrscheinlich eh nur noch AVATARE sind.

Und was haben die Jungs musikalisch geschafft? Ihre Instrumentalisierung ist allgemein bekannt, da gehören Geigen, Pfeifen und Dudelsack dazu, was den musikalischen Range einigermassen definiert. Etwas hat die Band aber definitiv vollständig richtig gemacht; die Schweizer Melissa Bonny (AD INFINITUM, EVERMORE) und Thomas Winkler (Angus McSix!) als Gastsänger mit an Bord zu nehmen, war eine richtig gute Idee. Besonders Bonni’s Stimme bereichert den Sound. Auch SALTATIO MORTIS Jörg Roth aka Alea gibt dem Album zusätzlichen Würde.

Und welche der Cover sind nun die Besten? ABBAs „Gimme, Gimme, Gimme“ gefällt mir, weil es sich einerseits relativ nahe am Original hält und dem Song andererseits viel metallischen Wumms und Glanz. „Ding“ von SEEED finde ich richtig gut gelungen, die Mischung zwischen Humor und Härte entspricht dem Beuteschema von FEUERSCHWANZ, ist ihnen quasi auf den Leib geschrieben. „I See Fire“ von ED SHEERAN schafft, dass man den Song schon fast etwas lieb bekommt. So richtig erstaunlich ist das nicht, denn ob man ihn mag oder nicht, eines kann ED SHEERAN – Melodien!
Eine der besten Nummern finde ich persönlich „Bad Touch“ von der BLOOD HOUND GANG – das ist ein unerwartetes Brett, eine richtig fette Nummer – mehr Power als das Original. Ebenso spannend ist „Engel“ von RAMMSTEIN – dem Track steht das mittelalterliche Gewand. POWERWOLF und SABATON sind keine Herausforderung, sind nahe am Original.

Und dann – AMON AMARTHs „Twilight Of The Thunder God“. Als absoluter und gnadenloser Fan der Schweden-Wikinger hab ich mir das Ding mehrfach gut angehört, nach einem Grund gesucht, die Deutschen zu teeren und zu federn. Sinnlos, das Cover ist einfach zu gut. Klar, die Ausgangslage ist schon optimal, aber den Viking-Metal Kracher in ein folkloristisches Gewand zu kleiden, etwas an brachialer Kraft zu nehmen und dafür mit kreischender Sleaze-Rock-Stimme zu dekorieren – check! Check!

Negative Seiten, also abgekackt? Definitiv, den Track „Der Graf“ von den Ärzten hätten sie sich sparen können – absolut unbrauchbar – wobei ich auch das Original schon nicht zwingend notwendig fand. „Dragostea Din Tei“ finde ich auch keine musikalische Meisterleistung, scheint der Band aber Spass gemacht zu haben.

Fazit

„Todsünden“ ist nicht das musikalisch beste Album, aber es ist mit Abstand die beste Coversammlung, die ich je gehört habe. Das Ding macht das, wofür FEUERSCHWANZ stehen – Spass, sich selber nicht zu ernst zu nehmen, tun, was einem Freude macht. Ich freue mich darauf, die Jungs kommenden Sommer wieder auf einer Festivalbühne zu sehen – das wird ein Spass!

FEUERSCHWANZ, who doesn’t know these German medieval metallers from the Erlangen area? In the meantime, they no longer only make medieval markets unsafe, but have also been playing the big festivals for a long time. They parody the medieval scene, make fun of it and yet are also right in the middle of it.

FEUERSCHWANZ are Hauptmann Feuerschwanz (vocals, acoustic guitar), Johanna von der Vögelweide alias Stephanie Pracht (violin, hurdy-gurdy), Hans der Aufrechte alias Hans Platz (electric guitar), Prinz R. Hodenherz III alias Benjamin Metzner (acoustic guitar, flutes, rauschpfeife, bagpipes, vocals), Jarne Hodinsson alias Jan Jamaszyk (electric bass), Rollo H. Schönhaar alias Rolf Hering (drums), Mieze Musch-Musch (performance & dance) and Mieze Myu alias Jenny Diehl (performance, dance, harp).

The album? „Todsünden“ is the absolute hammer! Why? That takes a bit more time and a look at it from different angles. First the story with the eggs. You need them if you want to make enemies of AMON AMARTH, ABBA, DIE TOTEN HOSEN, GHOST, SABATON, EUROPE and many more. The Germans will definitely not be booked as support for MANOWAR – Joey De Mayo is definitely not joking about that. So, the girls and boys have balls. Check!

Then the selection. „Gimme, Gimme, Gimme“ or „Hier Kommt Alex“, „Engel“, „Warriors Of The World United“ and „Twilight Of The Thunder God“ – no second-rate B-single titles, but the big hits of the respective bands. Hauptmann Feuerschwanz, Johanna von der Vögelweide and their pals have imagination and can thus top the risk they have already taken. Check!

Then there’s the choice of artists covered. That a metal band takes on other metal bands is somewhat obvious. They could at least bribe or forewarn them with a few beers at one festival or another. So they have nothing to fear from AMON AMARTH, SABATON, POWERWOLF or GHOST. They will hardly run into the BLOODHOUND GANG, the intersection of common concerts or festivals should be relatively small. ED SHEERAN? He recently did Metalsound as well, so they may do the other way round.
Less obvious but also no danger; SEEED are no problem, the reggae-ans are stoned all the time anyway. You can also tick off THE WEEKND, who will get scared of the heavily armed medieval henchmen and run for the hills. RAMMSTEIN are above it all, O-ZONE are happy for some publicity, as are EUROPE. DIE ÄRZTE and DEICHKIND – no idea, but probably no problem. And ABBA – they’re harmless because they’re probably just AVATARE anyway.

And what have the boys achieved musically? Their instrumentation is well known, including violins, whistles and bagpipes, which defines the musical range to some extent. But the band definitely did something completely right; taking Swiss Melissa Bonny (AD INFINITUM, EVERMORE) and Thomas Winkler (Angus McSix!) on board as guest vocalists was a really good idea. Especially Bonni’s voice enriches the sound. Also SALTATIO MORTIS Jörg Roth aka Alea gives the album additional dignity.

And which of the covers are the best? I like ABBA’s „Gimme, Gimme, Gimme“ because on the one hand it stays relatively close to the original and on the other hand it gives the song a lot of metallic oomph and shine. I think „Ding“ by SEEED is really good, the mixture between humour and harshness corresponds to FEUERSCHWANZ’s style, it’s almost tailor-made for them. ED SHEERAN’s „I See Fire“ almost makes you like the song a bit. That’s not really surprising, because whether you like it or not, ED SHEERAN can do one thing – melodies!
One of the best numbers I personally find is „Bad Touch“ by the BLOOD HOUND GANG – this is an unexpected board, a really fat number – more power than the original. Just as exciting is „Engel“ by RAMMSTEIN – the track suits the medieval garb. POWERWOLF and SABATON are no challenge, are close to the original.

And then – AMON AMARTH’s „Twilight Of The Thunder God“. As an absolute and merciless fan of the Swedish Vikings, I listened to this thing well several times, looking for a reason to tar and feather the Germans. Pointless, the cover is just too good. Sure, the starting position is already optimal, but to dress up the Viking-Metal hit in a folkloristic garment, to take away some of the brute force and to decorate it with a screaming Sleaze-Rock voice – check! Check!

Negative sides, so fucked up? Definitely, they could have saved the track „Der Graf“ by Die Ärzte – absolutely useless – although I didn’t think the original was absolutely necessary either. I don’t find „Dragostea Din Tei“ a musical masterpiece either, but the band seems to have had fun.

Conclusion

„Todsünden“ is not the best album musically, but it is by far the best collection of covers I have ever heard. This thing does what FEUERSCHWANZ stand for – fun, not taking yourself too seriously, doing what you enjoy. I’m looking forward to seeing the guys on a festival stage again next summer – it’s going to be fun!
