Wenn du da nur kurz in die Promo reinhörst, wird augenblicklich klar – über die Band musst du zumindest ein paar Worte verlieren. Besonders, wenn die Truppe als Vorabsingle zum neuen Album eine Akkustiksingle veröffentlicht, welche sämtliche Erwartungen negiert. Da kriegen wir gleich mal eine Single vor den Latz geknallt, die eher in der Tradition der alten Classicrocker oder bei den Herren CAVE oder WAITS erwartet würde. Jedoch, keine Angst – die Jungs können nach wie vor brettern, was die Single „Broken Boy“ eindrücklich zeigt. Einmal mehr belegen die Jungs mit dem neuen Album, dass das Genre Metalcore oder Post Hardcore zu kurz greift. Da ist viel roher Rock drin, Punkattitüde ebenso. RIVERHEAD können gar nicht anders, als Genregrenzen zu sprengen.
RIVERHEAD sind Jacob Bredahl – Vocals, Martin Medom Olsen – Guitar, Mixen Lindberg – Bass und Mads Folmer Richter – Drums. Der Titel des Albums bezieht sich darauf, dass Sänger Bredahl an Krebs erkrankte, nachdem er der Band als neuer Sänger beitrat und die Inhalte durch diese Auseinandersetzung mit Krankheit und möglichem Tod stark beeinflusste, obwohl die ARbeit am Album schon weite fortgeschritten war.
Auf dem Album „Cancer“ zeigen sie das, indem sie von Beginn weg nur eine Richtung kennen „straight ahead“, volle Kraft voraus. Allerdings können die Dänen auch besinnlich; „Numb Of The World etwa, oder das erwähnte 0806. Diesen Tracks wohnt aber eine seltsame Schwere inne, die Geschichten werden stimmungsmässig sehr stringent umgesetzt. Sänger Jacob Bredahl meint dazu: „Wahrscheinlich der wichtigste Track auf dem Album, da wir den Mut aufbringen mussten, einen Song wie ‚0806‘ zu schreiben und aufzuführen, der so ehrlich, roh und zerbrechlich ist, wie er nur sein kann. Er wurde eines Nachts während der Aufnahmesession in einem Hotel fertiggestellt, in dem wir wohnten, direkt gegenüber demselben Krankenhaus, in dem sich die Geschichte im Jahr zuvor abspielte.“
Es ist diese Spannweite und Authentizität, welche die Faszination von RIVERHEAD ausmacht, die absolute Kraft, welche aus jedem Track strömt. „Cancer“ lässt kaum Pausen zu, auch die langsamen Tracks ziehen dich rein in eine Tiefe, die emotional packt, dich auf deine eigenen, dunklen Seiten oder Phasen zurückwirft – ohne dabei schwermütig zu sein. Letztlich spricht aus sämtlichen Tracks eine lebensbejahende Energie mit der Erkenntnis, dass auch diese dunklen, schweren, traurigen Phasen zum Leben gehören.
Fazit
„Cancer“ ist schon rein thematisch einigermassen schwer verdaulich – es verlangt Auseinandersetzung – musikalisch und textlich. Mit seiner Rohheit verlangt es dem Zuhörer einiges ab. Wenn du stark genug bist, dich darauf einzulassen, musst du das Album unbedingt kaufen!

The title of the album refers to the fact that singer Bredahl fell ill with cancer after joining the band as a new vocalist and the content was strongly influenced by this confrontation with illness and possible death, although the work on the album was already well advanced.
On the album „Cancer“ they show this by knowing only one direction from the beginning „straight ahead“, full speed ahead. However, the Danes can also be contemplative; „Numb Of The World, for example, or the aforementioned 0806. But these tracks have a strange heaviness, the stories are implemented very stringently in terms of atmosphere. Singer Jacob Bredahl comments: „Probably the most important track on the album, as we had to muster up the courage to write and perform a song like ‚0806‘, which is as honest, raw and fragile as it gets. It was finished one night during the recording session at a hotel we were staying at, right across the street from the same hospital where the story took place the year before.“
It is this span and authenticity that is the fascination of RIVERHEAD the absolute power that flows from each track. „Cancer“ hardly allows any breaks, even the slow tracks pull you in, into a depth that emotionally grabs you, throws you back to your own dark sides or phases – without being melancholic. Ultimately, all the tracks speak of a life-affirming energy with the realization that even those dark, heavy, sad phases are part of life.
Conclusion
„Cancer“ is already purely thematically somewhat difficult to digest – it demands confrontation – musically and lyrically. With its rawness it demands a lot from the listener. If you are strong enough to get involved with it, you absolutely have to buy the album!
