Eigentlich ist „kleine Gitarre“ falsch – denn zumeist liegt eine ausgewachsene, abgewetzte Fender Stratocaster in den Händen des Schwergewichtes. Die wirkt aber ein wenig wie eine Kinder- oder Spielzeuggitarre, denn Popa ist gross und schwer – nicht nur körperlich, auch musikalisch.Was mich an seinen Live-Auftritten immer wieder erstaunt hat – der Mann hat Hände, die es eigentlich kaum möglich erscheinen lassen, so präzise und flink über die Saiten zu huschen.
Klar, Theodore Joseph Horowitz ist kein Hochgeschwindigkeitsgitarrist wie wir sie aus der Rock- und Metalszene kennen. Er spielt auch keinen technisch ausgefeilten Blues wie ein JOE BONAMASSA – nicht, weil er es nicht könnte, sondern weil er den Blues in einer ursprünglichen Weise spielt.
Jetzt kommt mit „Emotional Gangster“ sein 35stes!!! Album seit 1991 auf den Markt. Der Mann liefert also fast jedes Jahr ein Album ab. Stimmt jetzt nicht ganz, manchmal macht er ein oder zwei Jahre Pause, um dann gleich zwei oder drei Alben in einem Jahr rauszuhauen. Dabei gelingt ihm immer wieder eine spannende Mischung von Covers und eigenen Tracks. Was erwartet uns im neuesten Werk?
Gehen wir gleich auf die Cover ein. Da gibt es den Klassiker „Hootchie Cootchie Man“ von MUDDY WATERS – ein Blues, wie er klassischer nicht sein könnte. Weiter geht es mit einer Hommage an Willie Dixon, den jüngst verstorbenen Bassisten von ZZ TOP – ein grandioser, grooviger Blues, bei dem zumindest die Hüfte mitwippt.
Letztlich aber machen den Godfather of New York Blues die Eigenkompositionen aus. Und da hat sich Daddy wirklich was einfallen lassen. „Fly Away“ ist ein Slow Blues erster Güte, in welchem Popa über einen Vater singt, der erlebt, wie sein Kind das elterliche Nest verlässt – melancholisch und trotzdem hoffnungsfroh. EBenfalls ein Schmankerl – jedoch in die andere Richtung – ist „Tonight I’m Gonna Be The Man“ ist ein schneller Blues und Popa brilliert mit Slide Guitar im Riffing und beim Solo. Unbeschwert und fröhlich agiert der Barde dann bei „Equal Opportunity“ – tanzbar und zum Mitsingen.
Interessant auch, was Popa mit „Why You Wanna Make War“, das er einmal in englischer und einmal in französischer Version singt. Ziemlich direkt fragt er nach, warum man Krieg führen sollte, wenn man stattdessen eine Liebesnacht mit anschliessendem Frühstück haben könnte. Will man sich jetzt nicht mit Putin vorstellen – aber eine Alternative ist das allemal.
Fazit
Wenn POPA CHUBBY in die Saiten greift, kommt allemal etwas Gutes dabei raus. Im vorliegenden Fall ist das ebenso. Die volle Punktzahl verpasst das Album, weil mir so ein richtig wuchtiger Track fehlt – das ist jedoch Jammern auf hohem Niveau. Prädikat – musst du dir holen!

Actually, „small guitar“ is wrong – because mostly a full-grown, worn-out Fender Stratocaster lies in the hands of the heavyweight. But it seems a bit like a child’s or toy guitar, because Popa is big and heavy – not only physically, but also musically.What has always amazed me at his live performances – the man has hands that actually make it seem hardly possible to dart so precisely and nimbly over the strings. Of course, Theodore Joseph Horowitz is not a high-speed guitarist like we know from the rock and metal scene. Nor does he play technically polished blues like a JOE BONAMASSA – not because he couldn’t, but because he plays the blues in a primal way.
Now „Emotional Gangster“, his 35th!!! album since 1991 on the market. So the man delivers an album almost every year. That’s not quite true, sometimes he takes a break of one or two years and then releases two or three albums in one year. But he always manages an exciting mixture of covers and his own tracks. What can we expect from his latest work?
Let’s get straight to the covers. There’s the classic „Hootchie Cootchie Man“ by MUDDY WATERS – a blues that couldn’t be more classic. It continues with a tribute to Willie Dixon, the recently deceased bassist of ZZ TOP – a grandiose, groovy blues that will at least make your hips sway along.
In the end, however, it’s the original compositions that make the Godfather of New York Blues. And that’s where Daddy has really come up with something. „Fly Away“ is a slow blues of the first order, in which Popa sings about a father who experiences his child leaving the parental nest – melancholic and yet hopeful. Another treat – but in the other direction – is „Tonight I’m Gonna Be The Man“, a fast blues and Popa shines with slide guitar riffing and soloing. The bard then acts light-hearted and cheerful on „Equal Opportunity“ – danceable and singable.
Interesting also what Popa does with „Why You Wanna Make War“, which he sings once in English and once in French. He asks quite directly why one should wage war when one could have a night of love followed by breakfast instead. It’s not something you want to imagine with Putin now – but it’s certainly an alternative.
Conclusion
When POPA CHUBBY plays the strings, something good always comes out of it. In this case it is the same. The album misses the full score because I miss a really powerful track – but that’s complaining on a high level. Predicate – you have to get it!
