PINK FLOYD – „Animals 2018 Remix“

Es ist schon schwierig, ein wieder aufgelegtes Meisterwerk zu würdigen, das einerseits keine neue Musik bringt und andererseits zu den Alben gehört, das ich beim Erscheinen verehrte…

Und genauso geht es mir. Unschuldige sechzehn Jährchen war ich alt, als „Animals“ auf den Markt kam, damals bereits eingefleischter PINK FLOYD Fan. Was mir die Band bedeutete, zeigte sich darin, dass ich mit meinem spärlichen Taschengeld satte Fr. 35.- für die Schallplatte bezahlte – die ich selbstverständlich heute noch besitze. Das ist die emotional-historische Problemstellung.

Musikalisch gibt es da zwei Probleme; einerseits bin ich kein Fan von 5.1 Surround und besitze entsprechend auch keine dieser Lautsprecheransammlungen und andererseits gibt es da meine Thorens-NAD-Klipsch-Kombination, welche den Vinyl-Sound so wiedergibt, dass auch jeder noch so durchdesignte Remix eh durchfällt. Und wie gesagt, ich hab nciht einmal die Röhrenversion des Verstärkers. Also was zum Album sagen?

Das klingt auf den ersten Blick vielleicht etwas trivial – mich hat das Cover mehr als überzeugt. Das ist ein Remake des Originalcobers, das so 1977 bestimmt nicht möglich gewesen wäre. Und selbstverständlich – es gibt natürlich einen Mehrwert; Vinyl, CD und Blu Ray ebenso wie ein „limited edition deluxe gatefold package“ das die Vinyl, CD, Blu-ray, und DVD mit dem Remix sowie ein 32-seitiges Buch mit umfangreichem Dokumentationsmaterial. Für den Pink Floyd-Fan gehört dieses Package nur schon der Vollständigkeit halber in die Sammlung. Es schlägt mit etwa Fr. 60.- bis 70.- zu Buche – doppelt so teuer wie das Album damals – was selbstverständlich nicht mehr zu vergleichen ist.

Wie gesagt, das Album enthält die Originalsongs neu abgemischt, die Qualität ist ähnlich dem Vinyl – Original, falls es auf einer durchschnittlichen Anlage abgespielt wird. Die Scheibe ist technisch verfeinert, einen Vergleich mit einer wie auch immer gearteten Original-CD ist nicht möglich, weil es dieses Medium damals schlichtweg nicht gab.

Fazit

Lohnt es sich, das Ding zu kaufen? Auf jeden Fall. Einerseits bestimmt für Fans, welche eine möglichst vollständige Sammlung haben wollen, andererseits wohl für Menschen mit einer dieser grässlichen Sorround-Sound-Anlagen. Und letztlich auch ein wenig, weil David Gilmour und Roger Waters ihren epischen Streit für eine gewisse Zeit sistierten und diese Neuauflage überhaupt möglich machten. Obwohl ich die CD als Promomaterial kostenlos erhalten habe – das „limited edition – package“ habe ich mir natürlich angeschafft.

Das wiederum hat für einen Leser oder eine Leserin dieser Review einen Vorteil; wer schnell genug ist, gewinnt die CD. Wie immer; Mail an [email protected], Glück haben und das Teil geht in die Post.

It is already difficult to appreciate a reissued masterpiece that on the one hand brings no new music and on the other hand belongs to the albums that I adored when it was released…

And that’s exactly how I feel. Innocent sixteen year old I was when „Animals“ came out, already a die-hard PINK FLOYD fan at the time. What the band meant to me was shown by the fact that with my meager pocket money I paid a whopping Fr. 35.- for the record – which of course I still own today. That is the emotional-historical problem.

Musically there are two problems; on the one hand I am not a fan of 5.1 Surround and own accordingly also none of these loudspeaker collections and on the other hand there is my Thorens-NAD-Klipsch combination, which reproduces the vinyl sound in such a way that also each still so durchdesignte Remix falls through anyway. And as I said, I don’t even have the tube version of the amp. So what to say about the album?

This may sound a bit trivial at first glance – I was more than convinced by the cover. This is a remake of the original Cobers, which certainly wouldn’t have been possible in 1977. And of course – there is added value; vinyl, CD and Blu Ray as well as a „limited edition deluxe gatefold package“ that includes the vinyl, CD, Blu-ray, and DVD with the remix as well as a 32-page book with extensive documentation material. For the Pink Floyd fan, this package belongs in the collection just for the sake of completeness. It strikes with about Fr. 60.- to 70.- at book – twice as expensive as the album at that time – which is of course no longer comparable.

As I said, the album contains the original songs remixed, the quality is similar to the vinyl – original, if played on an average system. The disc is technically refined, a comparison with any kind of original CD is not possible, because this medium simply did not exist at that time.

conclusion

Is this thing worth buying? Absolutely. On the one hand definitely for fans who want to have as complete a collection as possible, on the other hand probably for people with one of those hideous surround sound systems. And finally also a little bit because David Gilmour and Roger Waters suspended their epic quarrel for some time and made this reissue possible at all. Although I received the CD as promo material for free – the „limited edition – package“ I have of course acquired.
