PAPA ROACH – auf „Ego Trip“

Da wir keine halben Sachen machen, musste ich mich bei der Bewertung des neuen Albums der Kalifornier entscheiden – letztlich ist es mir nicht schwer gefallen, die volle Zehn zu geben.
Ich kann mich gut erinnern, an jenes SUMMERBREEZE, an welchem ich PAPA ROACH zum letzten Mal live gesehen habe. Im Vorfeld hörte ich im VIP-Bereich zwei Jungs diskutieren. Fazit; PAPA ROACH wäre ja ganz nett, Jacoby Shaddix wäre einfach alt geworden und bringen keine richtig Power mehr.
Der anschliessende Auftritt strafte die Jungs sowas von Lügen, dass es eine Freude war – das war definitiv einer der powervollsten, erfrischendsten Auftritte des gesamten Festivals. Wenn „alt“ so aussieht, sollten viele Bands so schnell als möglich altern… 2019 veröffentlichte die Band dann ihr zehntes Album „Who Do You Trust“, mit dem sie einmal mehr bewiesen, dass sie ihren Zenith noch nicht überschritten haben. Jetzt folgt Album Nummer 11 – ein Jahr, bevor die Band ihr dreissigjähriges! Bestehen feiert.
Mit Fronter Jacoby Shaddix und Gitarrist Jerry Horton sind zwei Gründungsmitglieder an Bord, Bassist Tobin Esperance ist seit 1996 an Bord, Drummer Toni Palermo seit 2008. Kann die Band nach wie vor musikalisch überzeugen?
Was macht ein gutes Album in diesem Genre aus? Druck, Druck und Druck! Daneben ist es kein Nachteil, wenn das Rhythmusfundament mit Bass und Drums sehr stabil ist, die Band zusammenhält und gnadenlos zur Präzision anhält. Wenn dann die Gitarre ordentlich rifft und die Stimmen powervoll und charismatisch sind, kann eigentlich nichts mehr schiefgehen. Wenn das ganze Arrangement zusätzlich richtig gut ist, kreativ und abwechslungsreich – dann ist eine gute Scheibe geboren. Womit wir bei „Ego Trip“ wären.
Nicht weniger als 14 Tracks haben die Männer auf die Scheibe pressen lassen – ein Hit wie „Last Resort“ findet sich allerdings nicht, was allerdings auch schwierig ist, einen solchen Überhammer schreibt man nicht alle Tage.
Mich hat „Leave A Light On“ sofort in Beschlag genommen – Balladen schreibt die Band auch nicht alle Tage – hier legt sie ein sanftes, schönes Exemplar dieser Gattung vor. Shaddix kann singen und macht da hier grandios.
Ein weitere Track, der mich sofort angesprochen hat, ist „No Apologies“ – für PAPA ROACH Verhältnisse ein Midtempo-Kracher und ein Track, der mancher Metalcore-Band gut anstehen würde – auch wenn der Growl-Anteil fehlt. Harmonischer, kräftiger Klargesang sind halt ein Erkennungsmerkmal der Band.
Was das Album zuhauf bietet – Bretter jenseits von Balsaholz. Da wäre der Titeltrack „Ego Trip“ – eine Abrissbirne mit etwas sanfteren Zwischentönen oder der Opener „Kill The Noise“ – einfach nur vorwärts, Hindernisse werden niedergewalzt, aus dem Weg geräumt.
So könnte ich zu jedem Track etwas sagen – es wären aber nur Worte. Glücklicherweise hat die Band immer wieder Auskoppelungen gemacht und diverse Videos im Vorfeld produziert. So kann sich jeder Fan guten Nu Metals ein Bild davon machen, was ihn ab Freitag erwartet.
Fazit
Nicht umsonst gehört die Band nach beinahe dreissig Jahren zum Besten, was man auf der Bühne sehen kann. Die Kalifornier sind eine Institution, eine Benchmark für kreativen, druckvollen Nu Metal. Holt euch den geilen Scheiss am Freitag, hört euch das Ganze über eine Musikanlage an, die diesen Namen auch verdient – und schert euch einen Deut um die Meinung eurer Nachbarn!

Since we don’t do things by halves, I had to make a decision when rating the Californians‘ new album – in the end, it wasn’t difficult for me to give it a full ten.
I can remember well that SUMMERBREEZE where I saw PAPA ROACH live for the last time. Beforehand, I heard two guys discussing in the VIP area. Conclusion; PAPA ROACH would be quite nice, Jacoby Shaddix would just have gotten old and wouldn’t bring any real power anymore.
The following performance gave the boys such a lie that it was a joy – this was definitely one of the most powerful, refreshing performances of the whole festival. If this is what „old“ looks like, many bands should age as quickly as possible… In 2019, the band then released their tenth album „Who Do You Trust“, with which they proved once again that they have not yet passed their zenith. Now album number 11 follows – one year before the band celebrates its thirtieth! With frontman Jacoby Shaddix and guitarist Jerry Horton, two founding members are on board, bassist Tobin Esperance has been on board since 1996, drummer Toni Palermo since 2008. Can the band still convince musically?
What makes a good album in this genre? Pressure, pressure and pressure! Besides that, it is no disadvantage if the rhythm foundation with bass and drums is very stable, holds the band together and is merciless to precision. If then the guitar riffs properly and the voices are powerful and charismatic, nothing can really go wrong. If the whole arrangement is also really good, creative and varied – then a good record is born. Which brings us to „Ego Trip“.
The men have had no less than 14 tracks pressed onto the disc – but there is no hit like „Last Resort“, which is also difficult, you don’t write such a superhit every day.
I was immediately taken in by „Leave A Light On“ – ballads are not something the band writes every day either – here they present a gentle, beautiful specimen of the genre. Shaddix can sing and does a great job here.
Another track that appealed to me immediately is „No Apologies“ – for PAPA ROACH standards a midtempo hit and a track that would suit many a metalcore band – even if the growl part is missing. Harmonic, strong clear vocals are just a distinctive feature of the band.
What the album offers in abundance – planks beyond balsa wood. There is the title track „Ego Trip“ – a wrecking ball with a little softer nuances or the opener „Kill The Noise“ – just forward, obstacles are rolled down, cleared out of the way.
So I could say something about every track – but it would only be words. Fortunately, the band has always made outtakes and produced various videos in advance. So every fan of good nu metal can get an idea of what to expect from Friday.
conclusion
Not for nothing, after almost thirty years, the band is one of the best to be seen on stage. The Californians are an institution, a benchmark for creative, powerful Nu Metal. Get this awesome shit on Friday, listen to it on a stereo worthy of the name – and don’t give a damn about what your neighbours think!
