Es ist erstaunlich, wenn ein Label die eigene Band als Rockband promotet und dir dann Musik vor den Latz knallt, wie sie OF MICE & MEN machen. Da ist das Genre Rock doch ziemlich weit gefasst, ziemlich universal. Zutreffend ist es auf jeden Fall nicht oder total – je nach Definition halt.
Für mich ist Musik, welche dir mit Doubleblasts die Magengrube beackert, welche dir sowohl Growls als auch melodischen Cleangesang in die Gehörgänge hämmert und dabei vorwiegend auf fette Bässe und knackige Riffs setzt – schlicht und einfach Metalcore. Oder wer es gerne etwas „professioneller“ mag; Post-Hardcore. Oder nochmal anders; OF MICE & MEN.

Die Südkalifornier spielen in einer relativ klassischen Besetzung Aaron Pauley (Bass + Vocals ), Valentino Arteaga (Drums), Alan Ashby (Guitar) und Phil Manansala (Guitar), wobei Aaron Pauley sowohl Growls als auch Cleargesang liefert. Das bedeutet, dass die Band auf Tour teilweise verstärkt wird.

Was hat das neue Album zu bieten? Zuerst einmal – wie gewohnt – heftig druckvoller Metalcore der härteren Art. OF MICE & MEN orientieren sich definitiv stärker am Hardcore als andere Bands wie etwa WE CAME AS ROMANS. Was nicht bedeutet, dass die melodischen, cleanen Passagen fehlen würden. Erstaunlich – wie weiter oben schon angetönt – Aaron Pauley zeichnet allein für beide Klangfarben beim Gesang verantwortlich.

Interessant; das Album besteht aus den beiden EPs „Timeless“ and „Bloom“ sowie der neuen „Ad Infinitum“ EP, welche im April kommenden Jahres als Vinyl veröffentlicht werden wird.
10 Tracks liefern die Mannen aus, praktisch jeder enorm druckvoll, heftig, gerade vorwärts. Leise Passagen muss man erst einmal suchen – etwa in Teilen bei „Anchor“. Ein mehrheitlich harmonischer, fast schon ruhiger Track ist „Fighting Gravity“, eher midtempo, die melodischen Stimmen überwiegen, die ganz harten Passagen fallen für einmal weg.
Es scheint beinahe so, als wollten die Jungs das Album sanft ausklingen lassen. Mit dem letzten Song „Helplessly Hoping“ schliesst tatsächlich eine Ballade das Album ab, nachdem kurz vorher mit „Echo“ nochmals heftig auf den Putz gehauen wird. Allerdings werden auch hier die ganz harten Parts mit melodiösen Fragmenten aufgelockert. „Echo“ ist für mich der typischste Metalcore-Song auf der Scheibe, der alle Ingredienzen bietet, die notwendig sind.

Fazit

OF MICE & MEN erfinden sich mit diesen zehn Songs nicht neu, das Album ist kein Wechsel weg von bewährten Rezepten. Warum auch? Die Kalifornier gehören zu den stärksten Vertretern dieses Genres, dafür lieben sie ihre Fans. Und diese werden sich das Album bestimmt nicht entgehen lassen. wer zu seiner Bekanntschaft, seinem Freundeskreis oder seiner Familie einen Metaller mit weissen Turnschuhen zählt – warum nicht dieses Album zu Weiohnachten schenken? Unterm Christbaum kann man sich ja immerhin „Helplessly Hoping anhören, ohne dass das Gebäum nadelt.

It’s amazing when a label promotes its own band as a rock band and then slams music in your face like OF MICE & MEN do. The genre rock is quite broad, quite universal. For me, music that hits you in the pit of your stomach with double blasts, that hammers both growls and melodic clean vocals into your ear canals and relies mainly on fat bass and crunchy riffs – is simply metalcore. Or for those who like it a bit more „professional“; post-hardcore. Or again differently; OF MICE & MEN.

The Southern Californians play a relatively classic line-up of Aaron Pauley (Bass + Vocals ), Valentino Arteaga (Drums), Alan Ashby (Guitar) and Phil Manansala (Guitar), with Aaron Pauley providing both growls and clear vocals. This means that some of the band will be amplified on tour.

What does the new album have to offer? First of all – as usual – fiercely powerful metalcore of the heavier kind. OF MICE & MEN are definitely more hardcore oriented than other bands like WE CAME AS ROMANS. Which doesn’t mean that the melodic, clean passages are missing. Amazing – as already mentioned above – Aaron Pauley alone is responsible for both timbres on vocals.

Interesting; the album consists of the two EPs „Timeless“ and „Bloom“ as well as the new „Ad Infinitum“ EP, which will be released on vinyl next April.
10 tracks the guys deliver, practically every one enormously powerful, heavy, straight forward. You have to search for quiet passages – for example in parts of „Anchor“. A mostly harmonic, almost calm track is „Fighting Gravity“, rather midtempo, the melodic voices predominate, the very hard passages are omitted for once.
It almost seems as if the guys wanted to let the album end gently. With the last song „Helplessly Hoping“, a ballad actually closes the album, after „Echo“, which is a heavy song before. However, the very hard parts are also loosened up here with melodic fragments. „Echo“ is for me the most typical metalcore song on the disc, offering all the ingredients that are necessary.

conclusion

OF MICE & MEN do not reinvent themselves with these ten songs, the album is not a shift away from tried and tested recipes. Why should it? The Californians belong to the strongest representatives of this genre, their fans love them for it. And they certainly won’t miss this album. If you have a metalhead with white trainers among your acquaintances, friends or family – why not give this album as a Christmas present? After all, you can listen to „Helplessly Hoping“ under the Christmas tree without the tree needling.
