NORTHTALE – „Eternal Flame“ seit 12.11.21
Richtig, ich habe die VÖ dieser Hammertruppe verpasst. Also eigentlich nicht, es war einfach auch sonst viel gutes Material am Start. Und letztlich ist Aufmerksamkeit dann, wenn niemand (mehr) berichtet, ja auch etwas wert.

Wenn wir von Power- oder gar Speedmetal sprechen, fallen uns in erster Linie DRAGON FORCE ein. Die haben so richtig schnelle Saitenfinger und mit den Doppel-Solo-Gitarren geht da richtig die Post ab. Allerdings ist das, was sie machen, teilweise ziemlich grenzwertig – ich habe da schon den Ausdruck „Solo-Gewichse“ benutzt – was niciht besonders nett, aber doch einigermassen zutreffend ist.
NORTHTALE gehören klar in diese Sparte, weil ihr Gitarrist Bill Hudson mehr als fähig ist, das Tempo der DRAGON FORCER zu halten. Eigentlich verhält es sich mit NORTHTALE ja so wie mit ANNIHILATOR – beide Bands sind Projekte ihrer Schöpfer Jeff Waters und Bill Hudson. Und beide brauchen weitere Musiker, um die Bühnen zu rocken.
Mit Guilherme Hirose am Mikrofon, Patrick Johansson an Drums und Percussion, Mikael Planefeldt am Bass und Jimmy Pitts an den Keyboards hat Hudson die Idealbesetzung gefunden. Aber was bietet das Album?
Gleich vorneweg; die Scheibe ist perfekt aufgenommen, die Tracks super arrangiert, das technische Level der Band extrem hoch. Und trotzdem gebe ich nicht zehn Punkte – es klingt halt schon Alles etwas nach DRAGON FORCE. Und genau wie bei den Briten dominieren einerseits die Gitarren, andererseits unterscheiden sich die Songs untereinander nicht wahnsinnig.
Damit wird es auch nicht einfach, einzelne Tracks hervorzuheben, als Hörtipps zu definieren. Egal, die Fans werden das Album eh schon gekauft haben und Neueinsteiger werden die durchgehende Power des Albums lieben. Klar, es ist Powermetal vom Feinsten, Hudson ein unbestrittener Meister seines Faches.
Einzelne Tracks warten auch mit kleinen Überraschungen auf; „Wings Of Salvation“ ist der absolute Hookliner, ein Song, der wie eine Ballade beginnt, sich dann zum epischen Midtempo-Song weiterentwickelt.
Ebenso „The Land of Mystic Rites„, in welchem orientalische Elemente eingeflocheten wurden – quasi ein orientalischer Basar, auf dem eine wildgewordene Gitarrentruppe ihr Unwerk treibt.
Es gibt also durchaus Abwechslung – sie bleibt aber leider die Ausnahme. Ansonsten sind die Tracks genretypisch – entweder mit eher langsamem Beginn oder gleich Vollgas voraus. Wie gesagt, das alles auf sehr hohem Niveau.
Fazit
Bill Hudson liefert mit NORTHTALE und „Eternal Flame“ ab, erfüllt die Erwartungen mehr als gut. Trotzdem hätten dem Album etwas mehr Vielfalt, etwas mehr ruhige Töne durchaus gut getan. Wer guten Powermetal liebt, wird jedoch meine Empfehlung unbestritten umsetzen – kaufen und so richtig laut abfeiern!

When we talk about power or even speed metal, DRAGON FORCE come to mind first and foremost. They have really fast string fingers and with the double solo guitars it really goes off. However, what they do is sometimes quite borderline – I’ve already used the expression „solo wank“ – which is not very nice, but still somewhat accurate.
NORTHTALE clearly belong in this category, because their guitarist Bill Hudson is more than capable of keeping up the pace of DRAGON FORCER. Actually, NORTHTALE is like ANNIHILATOR – both bands are projects of their creators Jeff Waters and Bill Hudson. And both need more musicians to rock the stages.
With Guilherme Hirose on the microphone, Patrick Johansson on drums and percussion, Mikael Planefeldt on bass and Jimmy Pitts on keyboards, Hudson has found the ideal line-up. But what does the album offer?
At the outset, the disc is perfectly recorded, the tracks superbly arranged, the band’s technical level extremely high. And yet I don’t give it ten points – it all sounds a bit like DRAGON FORCE. And just like with the Brits, the guitars dominate on the one hand, on the other hand the songs don’t differ much from each other.
This also makes it difficult to highlight individual tracks, to define them as listening tips. No matter, fans will have already bought the album anyway and newcomers will love the continuous power of the album. Sure, it’s power metal at its best, Hudson an undisputed master of his craft.
Individual tracks also come up with little surprises; „Wings Of Salvation“ is the absolute hookliner, a song that starts like a ballad, then develops into an epic midtempo song.
Also „The Land of Mystic Rites„, in which oriental elements have been incorporated – an oriental bazaar, so to speak, in which a wild guitar troupe is up to its mischief.
So there is definitely variety – but unfortunately it remains the exception. Otherwise, the tracks are typical for the genre – either with a rather slow start or full throttle ahead. As I said, all this on a very high level.
Conclusion
Bill Hudson delivers with NORTHTALE and „Eternal Flame“, more than meets expectations. Nevertheless, the album could have done with a bit more variety, a bit more quiet tones. If you love good power metal, however, you will undoubtedly implement my recommendation – buy it and party really loud!
