Was bedeutet es, wenn eine Gitarristin ein Soloalbum macht und dabei illustre Gäste an Bord hat wie Alissa White Gluz, Chris Motionless, Alice Cooper, Anders Fridén, David Draiman oder Lzzy Hale? Dass sie Teil eines guten Netzwerkes ist – und eine richtig, richtig gute Gitarristin!
Wer Nita Strauss einmal live erlebt hat, weiss, dass da eine der weltbesten Saitengöttinnen am Werk ist. Als Gitarristin des grossen COOPER zeigt sie ihre spielerische Genialität – ihre Fähigkeiten als eigenständige Musikerin und Songwriterin demonstriert sie eindrücklich auf ihrem kommenden Soloalbum „The Call Of The Void“, das in gut einer Woche auf den Markt kommt. An alle Gitarristen da draussen – was die 36-jährige Vinita Sandhya „Nita“ Strauss hier abliefert, hat die Klasse zum Album des Jahres im Bereich Gitarrenmusik. Auf dieser Scheibe jagt ein Knaller den anderen. Einige Songs sind bereits vor einiger Zeit ausgekoppelt worden – etwa „The Wolf You Feed“ mit Alissa White Gluz von ARCH ENEMY. Hier zeigt Nita Strauss im Duett mit Alissa, dass sie durchaus auch singen kann.
14 Tracks, davon nur fünf ohne Gäste, hat Nita auf das Album gepresst. 14 Tracks, von denen keiner abfällt, sich keiner Schwächen erlaubt. Da gibt es berührende, beinahe schon „leise“ Tracks wie jener mit Draiman ebenso wie richtig harte Bretter, beispielsweise „The Golden Trail“ mit Fridén.
Klar, die Auswahl der Gäste nimmt Einfluss auf die Genres, die musikalische Gestaltung, das Composing. Über allem schweben aber die Riffs, die Soli der Frau an der Gitarre.
Dass sie auch ohne Gäste kann, zeigen die „Solo“-Tracks. Da wäre „Summer Storm“. Ein sanfter Einstieg mit dem ersten wimmernden Solo, das dann aber ziemlich bald in einer doubleblastigen Metalnummer mündet. Man mag hier den Gesang vermissen – auf der anderen Seite müsste man sich fragen, wer denn singen sollen würde? Und damit gibt es auf dem Album vier Rätsel, die jede/r selbst lösen kann.
Mit „Scorched“ schlägt die eine instrumentale Powerballade auf, ein Beispiel dafür, dass gute Gitarre nicht schnell sein muss. Es ist eine Binsenweisheit, dass die besten Gitarristen den weniger guten etwas voraus haben – sie können Soli langsam und mit wenigen Tönen. „Scorched“ ist ein Beispiel dafür, wie sich das anhören könnte.
Es gibt auch was für die Speedmetaller, für die Fans der treibenden Drums, der knackigen Bassläufe – volle Kanne vorwärts. Nita Strauss komponiert mal eben eine Blaupause für richtig guten Metal. Eine Growlstimme über „Momentum“ legen und man hat einen Track, der von AMON AMARTH ebenso stammen könnte wie von ARCH ENEMY – um nur zwei Beispiele zu nennen.
Nicht mehr und nicht weniger als einen philosophischen Exkurs modelliert die Gitarristin in ihre fünfte Solonummer. „Kintsugi“ bedeutet „Narben aus Gold“ und beschreibt die Technik, zerbrochene Keramik wieder zu reparieren – um dann die „Narben“ mit reinem Gold zu belegen. Eine wunderbare Metapher für unser Leben, die Aufforderung, unsere Narben zu schätzen, ihnen jene Bedeutung zu geben, die ihnen zusteht. Nita Strauss gibt diesem Track das Gewand einer wunderschönen Instrumentalballade – ein Highlight!
Diese Ballade geht dann beinahe nahtlos über in den Bonustrack „Surfacing“. Ihr Gast hier – Marty Friedmann, seines Zeichens Gitarrist von MEGADETH während der wohl erfolgreichsten Zeit der Band. So klingt eine Metalnummer, wenn zwei grandiose Saitenzauberer miteinander musizieren.
Fazit
Das Album ist über längere Zeit entstanden – was sich bei dieser Gästeliste von selbst versteht. Es ist über längere Zeit gereift und herausgekommen ist ein ausgewogener, gehaltvoller Tropfen. Holt euch die Scheibe, sobald sie draussen ist und lasst sie euch schmecken. Jetzt!

Anyone who has ever seen Nita Strauss live knows that she is one of the world’s best string goddesses at work. As guitarist of the great COOPER she shows her playing genius – her abilities as an independent musician and songwriter she demonstrates impressively on her upcoming solo album „The Call Of The Void“, which will be released in about a week. To all guitarists out there – what 36-year-old Vinita Sandhya „Nita“ Strauss delivers here has the class to be the album of the year in the field of guitar music. On this disc, one banger chases the other. Some songs have already been released some time ago – such as „The Wolf You Feed“ with Alissa White Gluz from ARCH ENEMY. Here Nita Strauss shows in a duet with Alissa that she can also sing.
14 tracks, only five of them without guests, Nita has pressed on the album. 14 tracks, of which none falls off, none allows itself weaknesses. There are touching, almost „quiet“ tracks like the one with Draiman as well as really hard tracks like „The Golden Trail“ with Fridén.
Of course, the selection of the guests influences the genres, the musical arrangement, the composing. But above all float the riffs, the solos of the woman on the guitar.
The „solo“ tracks show that she can also do without guests. There is „Summer Storm.“ A gentle introduction with the first whimpering solo, which then pretty soon leads into a doubleblasted metal number. One might miss the vocals here – on the other hand, one would have to wonder who would sing? And with that, there are four riddles on the album that everyone can solve for themselves.
With „Scorched“ strikes the one instrumental power ballad, an example that good guitar does not have to be fast. It’s a truism that the best guitarists have something ahead of the lesser ones – they can do solos slowly and with few notes. „Scorched“ is an example of what that might sound like.
There’s also something for the speed metallers, for the fans of driving drums, crunchy basslines – full speed ahead. Nita Strauss composes a blueprint for really good metal. Put a growl voice over „Momentum“ and you have a track that could come from AMON AMARTH as well as from ARCH ENEMY – just to name two examples.
No more and no less than a philosophical digression the guitarist models into her fifth solo number. „Kintsugi“ means „scars of gold“ and describes the technique of repairing broken ceramics – to then cover the „scars“ with pure gold. It’s a wonderful metaphor for our lives, a call to cherish our scars, to give them the importance they deserve. Nita Strauss gives this track the guise of a beautiful instrumental ballad – a highlight!
This ballad then segues almost seamlessly into the bonus track „Surfacing“. Your guest here – Marty Friedmann, his sign guitarist of MEGADETH during the probably most successful time of the band. This is how a metal number sounds when two grandiose string wizards make music together.
Conclusion
The album was created over a longer period of time – which goes without saying with this guest list. It has matured over a longer period of time and the result is a well-balanced, substantial drop. Get the disc as soon as it is out and enjoy it. Now!
