Mit NICKELBACK verbinde ich drei Dinge. Erstens einen horrormässigen Foto-Akkreditierungs-Abend im Hallenstadion, mit „Dark Horse“ ein richtig geiles Rockalbum und eine unheimlich spontane, schnelle Aussage von ARCH ENEMY Frontfrau Alissa White Gluz, wer die „most overrated band of the world“ wäre: „NICKELBACK!“ Notabene, Alissa ist ebenfalls Kanadiererin…

Den oben erwähnten Foto-Abend im Hallenstadion kann ich NICKELBACK nur fast verzeihen. Wenn du dich als Fotograf neben das Mischpult stellen musst – ausserhalb der Abschrankungen wohlverstanden – und vierzig Meter von der Bühne weg, mitten im Publikum gute Bilder schiessen sollst, dann gibt es nur eine Konsequenz – ab nachhause! Und warum kann ich das jetzt einigermassen verzeihen? Wegen „Rollin'“, dem kommenden Album, das am 08.11.2022 auf den Markt kommt.

NICKELBACK sind Chad Kroeger, Vocals und Gitarre, Mike Kroeger an Bass und Backingvocals, Ryan Peake, Gitarre und Backingvocals sowie Daniel Adair, Drums und Backingvocals. NICKELBACK gehören zu den erfolgreichsten Rockbands der Welt, wobei die Definition von Rock hier relativ ist – NICKELBACK sind ebenso eine Popband oder eine Singer/Songwriterband oder…

Nun aber zur Musik. Eine Vorabsingle war „San Quentin“ und das ist gleichzeitig der grösste Brecher auf dem Album. „San Quentin“. Der Track ist knackig und druckvoll, das Gitarrensolo von Chad ist schlicht beeindruckend. Schade, dass das dazugehörige Video nicht kreativer ist, nettes „girl based“-Livevideo, aber eben nicht mehr. Spannendes Detail; Youtube liefert mir als nächstes Video „Black Is The Night“ von SAXON – was will mir das Videoportal damit sagen?
Ähnliches wie über „San Quentin“ kann man zu „Skinny Little Missy“ sagen, wobei mir hier Rhythmus und Riffing stärker hängenbleiben – und, dass Chad eigentlich eine ziemlich rockige Stimme hätte.
Klar, es gibt dann auch wieder die „typischen“ NICKELBACK-Pop-Songs, etwa „Those Days“ oder „High Time“, wobei Letzteres irgendwie auch Country-Gene hat.
Cool ist dann wieder „Vegas Bomb“ – so ein wenig US- Gangster-Vegas-Kupels-Bar-Romantik, aber ein schön fetter Track.
Mit „Steel Still Rusts“ legen sie eine anständige Powerballade auf, ordentlich Druck und eine schöne Hookline.
Mit „Horizon“ legen sie dann einen weiteren, klassischen NB-Song auf – schliesslich muss man den eigenen Fans auch genügend Futter geben – das ist weiter nicht verwerflich.

Fazit

Mit „Get Rollin“ liefern die Kanadier ein Rockalbum, das seinen Namen verdient, etwas Poprock ist drauf, allerdings auch nett Hardrock. „Get Rollin“ reicht nicht an „Dark Horse“ heran, das Album kann man aber guten Gewissens kaufen, wenn man NICKELBACK in hart hören möchte. Gut gemacht Jungs, Hallenstadion ist weitgehend verziehen!

With NICKELBACK I associate three things. I can only almost forgive NICKELBACK for the aforementioned photo night at the Hallenstadion. If you as a photographer have to stand next to the mixing desk – outside the barriers well understood – and forty meters away from the stage, in the middle of the audience to shoot good pictures, then there is only one consequence – go home! And why can I forgive this to some extent now? Because of „Rollin'“, the upcoming album, which will be released on 08.11.2022.

Now for the music. An advance single was „San Quentin“ and that is also the biggest crusher on the album. „San Quentin.“ The track is crisp and punchy, Chad’s guitar solo is simply impressive. Too bad that the accompanying video is not more creative, nice „girl based“ live video, but just not more. Exciting detail; Youtube provides me as the next video „Black Is The Night“ by SAXON – what does the video portal want to tell me with it?
Similar to „San Quentin“ can be said about „Skinny Little Missy“, although here rhythm and riffing stick to me more – and that Chad would actually have a pretty rock voice.
Clearly, there are then again the „typical“ NICKELBACK pop songs, such as „Those Days“ or „High Time“, whereby the latter somehow also has country genes.
Cool is then again „Vegas Bomb“ – so a little US gangster Vegas copper bar romance, but a nice fat track.
With „Steel Still Rusts“ they put on a decent power ballad, neat pressure and a nice hookline.
With „Horizon“ they then put on another, classic NB song – after all, you have to give their own fans enough fodder – this is further not reprehensible.

Conclusion

With „Get Rollin“ the Canadians deliver a rock album that deserves its name, some pop rock is on it, though also nice hard rock. „Get Rollin“ does not reach „Dark Horse“, but the album can be bought with a clear conscience if you want to hear NICKELBACK in hard. Well done guys, Hallenstadion is largely forgiven!
