METALLICA – 72 Seasons ist da…

Eigentlich schreibe ich keine Reviews mehr über Bands und Alben, von denen wir nicht mindestens einen Stream erhalten. Da ich mir das neue ‚tallica-Album eh gekauft hätte, mache ich mal einen Ausnahme.

Selbstverständlich braucht man kaum jemandem mehr vorzustellen, wer zur Band gehört, das Lineup ist seit genau 20 Jahren stabil und dürfte es wohl auch bleiben – bis die Jungs dann irgendwann wegsterben…
James Hetfield und seine Kollegen Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett und Robert Trujillo stemmen mit jedem neuen Album eine Riesenaufgabe; es soll besser werden als das letzte. Nicht mehr und nicht weniger.
Allerdings gehen in der Szene die Meinungen darüber auseinander, wie gut METALLICA ist und wie gut ihre jeweiligen Alben. Ein Problem, das ihnen das Leben in der Metalszene erschwert, haben die Jungs definitiv. Sie dürften die einzige Thrashmetalband sein, die Mainstream ist. Für die ehrenhaften Ritter des Underground und des „richtigen Metal“ sind die Amis schlicht keine Metalband.
Am anderen Ende der Skala – im Mainstream eben – gelten sie als die härteste Metalband, die regelmässig in Radio und TV spielen.
Ein Funfact; das mit Abstand schrägste und grottenschlechteste Album von METALLICA wird kaum erwähnt, kommt in den Reviews praktisch nicht vor. „Lulu“, gemeinsam mit LOU REED gemacht, ist nicht mehr als ein Haufen gequirlte Avantgarde-Scheisse – jawoll!

Zurück also zum neuen Album „72 Seasons“, welches also das bisher beste der Band sein müsste. Tut es aber natürlich nicht – die Klassiker, welche METALLICA unsterblich machen werden, sind längst draussen; „Master Of Puppets“ von 1986, „Kill ‚Em All“ von 1995 und „Metallica“ von 2003. Das ist meine persönliche Meinung, und irgendwie gehört für mich auch „Hardwired…To Self Destruct“.
Und „72 Seasons“? Die Thrasher haben uns ja schon im „Vorprogramm“ mit diversen Songs beglückt, und die liessen definitiv auf Gutes hoffen. Da sie alle auf dem Album mit drauf sind, ist es schon einmal nicht schlecht. Aber ist es auch gut? Richtig gut?
Nein, nein und nochmals nein. „72 Seasons“ ist nicht richtig gut, nicht richtig guterer als die Vorgänger. Mich hat „Hardwired…“ stärker beeindruckt, authentischer gewirkt.
„72 Seasons“ ist technisch einwandfrei, die Songs auf hohem Niveau komponiert und umgesetzt – METALLICA beherrschen schliesslich ihren Job. Es gibt wenige Bands, welche ein Album auf diesem Niveau bauen könnten. Aber ‚TALLICA müssen eben mehr. Sie müssen gute Arbeit liefern und das bisher Dagewesene toppen. Klar sind da geile Soli, das Riffing könnte kaum besser sein, Lars und Robert bringen eine stabile und präzise Basis und massig Drive.

Aber das Album vermag mich nicht zu packen, es überrascht mich nicht, es ist mir zu geschliffen. Da ist ein Album, wie man es erwarten darf – aber es ist klinisch rein. Und sorry, METALLICA ganz ohne Dreck geht gar nicht.
Ob es wenigstens einen Track gibt, der mich überrascht hat? Ja, und es ist mein Lieblingstrack auf der Scheibe; mit „Inamorata“ liefern METALLICA ein thrashig-progressives Stück Musik von über elf! Minuten. Der Mut hat sich gelohnt…

Fazit

„72 Seasons“ hinterlässt bei mir den Eindruck, dass der Vierer auf Biegen und Brechen ein „richtiges“ METALLICA-Album machen wollten – sie alles richtig machen wollten. Das haben sie, dabei ist aber die Authentizität aussen vor geblieben – schade!
Keine Frage, das Album kann man getrost kaufen, das ist erstens für die Vollständigkeit wichtig und zweitens kein Fehler.

Of course, hardly anyone needs to be introduced to who belongs to the band anymore, the lineup has been stable for exactly 20 years and is likely to stay that way – until the guys die off one day…
James Hetfield and his colleagues Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo have a huge task with every new album; it should be better than the last one. No more and no less.
However, opinions differ in the scene about how good METALLICA is and how good their respective albums are. The guys definitely have one problem that makes life difficult for them in the metal scene. They might be the only thrash metal band that is mainstream. For the honorable knights of the underground and „real metal“, the Yanks are simply not a metal band.
At the other end of the scale – in the mainstream, that is – they are considered the hardest metal band to play regularly on radio and TV.
A fun fact; METALLICA’s weirdest and worst album by far is hardly mentioned, practically doesn’t appear in the reviews. „Lulu“, made together with LOU REED, is nothing more than a pile of whipped avant-garde shit – yeah!

So back to the new album „72 Seasons“, which should be the best of the band so far. But of course it isn’t – the classics that will make METALLICA immortal are long gone; „Master Of Puppets“ from 1986, „Kill ‚Em All“ from 1995 and „Metallica“ from 2003. That’s my personal opinion, and somehow „Hardwired…To Self Destruct“ also belongs to it for me.
And „72 Seasons?“ The Thrashers have already made us happy in the „supporting program“ with various songs, and they definitely let us hope for good things. Since they are all on the album, it is already not bad. But is it good? Really good?
No, no and again no. „72 Seasons“ is not really good, not really better than its predecessors. I was more impressed by „Hardwired…“, it seemed more authentic.
„72 Seasons“ is technically flawless, the songs composed and realized on a high level – METALLICA finally master their job. There are few bands that could build an album on this level. But ‚TALLICA have to do more. They have to deliver good work and top what has been done so far. Sure, there are great solos, the riffing could hardly be better, Lars and Robert bring a stable and precise base and massive drive.

But the album is not able to grab me, it does not surprise me, it is too polished for me. There is an album, as you can expect – but it is clinically pure. And sorry, METALLICA completely without dirt is not possible at all.
I wonder if there is at least one track that surprised me? Yes, and it is my favorite track on the disc; with „Inamorata“ METALLICA deliver a thrashy progressive piece of music of over eleven! minutes. The courage has paid off….

Conclusion

„72 Seasons“ leaves me with the impression that the four-piece wanted to make a „real“ METALLICA album by hook or by crook – they wanted to do everything right. They did, but the authenticity was left out – a pity!
No question, the album can be bought confidently, that is firstly important for the completeness and secondly no mistake.
