KERRY KING braucht man weiss Gott nicht mehr vorzustellen. Der Gitarrist und Songwriter hat die Musik von SLAYER seit Anbeginn massgeblich geprägt, sein Riffing ist Kult.
Jetzt hat er sein Soloprojekt mit bekannten Musikern bestückt; Drummer Paul Bostaph, Sänger Mark Osegueda (DEATH ANGEL), Gitarrist Phil Demmel (VIOLENCE, EX-MACHINE HEAD) und Bassist Kyle Sanders (HELLYEAH, EX-BLOODSIMPLE) vervollständigen das Lineup.
Aktuell sieht es ja wieder nach einer Reunion von SLAYER aus, zumindest werden sie 2024 einige Konzerte in den Staaten spielen, Aufgrund der Überschneidungen im Lineup könnte KERRY KING jeweils direkt als Support spielen – oder umgekehrt? Ganz ehrlich – ich habe SLAYER seit 2019 nicht wirklich vermisst. Klar, die Big Four Truppe ist Kult, in den letzten Jahren vor ihrer Auflösung haben sie aber mehr mit Querelen innerhalb der Band als mit musikalischen Höhenflügen auf sich aufmerksam gemacht. Ihr letztes Album „Repentless“ war nett – viel mehr aber auch nicht.
Was bringt King nun aus der Asche hervor? Mit Mark Osegueda zumindest einmal einen Sänger, der locker mit Tom Araya mithalten kann, ihn meiner Meinung nach überflügelt. ANsonsten; ein geiles, hartes und schnelles Thrashalbum. King ist ein grandioser Gitarrist, ein Abbruch-Riffer vor dem Herrn. So geben sich auf „Rise From Hell“ Knochenbrechertracks die Klinke in die Hand. Für mich gibt es da keinen absoluten Höhe- oder Tiefpunkt. Zum abgerundeten Set gehören auch die brachialen und martialischen Tracknamen wie „Diablo“, „Rage“, „Shrapnel“ oder der Titeltrack „From Hell I Rise“. Klingt KERRY KING nach SLAYER? Klar, es wurde vom Kopf der erwähnten Band gemacht und es gibt keinen Grund, dass der Gitarrist plötzlich Bules oder Metalcore machen solte. Was meint King selber dazu?
„Ich denke, die Leute werden es mit SLAYER vergleichen. Davor habe ich keine Angst, denn ich denke, dass es mit allem mithalten kann, was wir in unserer Geschichte gemacht haben, sowohl musikalisch als auch von der Performance her.“ Dennoch: „Es wird Leute geben, die sich beschweren: ‚Warum klingt es wie SLAYER‘ und ‚Warum klingt es nicht mehr wie SLAYER‘? Das ist einfach das, was die Leute tun.“
Fazit
Ich gebe King zu einhundert Prozent Recht; „From Hell I Rise“ hält locker mit allem mit, was SLAYER je herausgebracht haben. Es ist ein Album, das zu den Besten des laufenden Jahres gehören wird – nciht nur für Thrashmetal-Fans. Kaufen!

God knows, KERRY KING needs no further introduction. The guitarist and songwriter has had a major influence on SLAYER’s music since the beginning, and his riffing is cult.
He has now added well-known musicians to his solo project; drummer Paul Bostaph, singer Mark Osegueda (DEATH ANGEL), guitarist Phil Demmel (VIOLENCE, EX-MACHINE HEAD) and bassist Kyle Sanders (HELLYEAH, EX-BLOODSIMPLE) complete the line-up.
It currently looks like SLAYER will be reuniting again, at least they will be playing a few shows in the States in 2024, and due to the overlaps in the line-up, KERRY KING could play directly as support – or vice versa? Honestly – I haven’t really missed SLAYER since 2019. Sure, the big four band are cult, but in the last few years before their break-up, they attracted more attention with squabbles within the band than with musical flights of fancy. Their last album „Repentless“ was nice – but not much more.
What will King bring forth from the ashes? With Mark Osegueda, at least once a singer who can easily keep up with Tom Araya, in my opinion even surpasses him. ANsonsten; a cool, hard and fast thrash album. King is a terrific guitarist, a demolition riffer before the Lord. On „Rise From Hell“, bone-crushing tracks are all over the place. For me, there is no absolute high or low point. The well-rounded set also includes brute and martial tracks such as „Diablo“, „Rage“, „Shrapnel“ or the title track „From Hell I Rise“. Does KERRY KING sound like SLAYER? Sure, it was made by the head of the aforementioned band and there’s no reason why the guitarist should suddenly be doing blues or metalcore. What does King himself think?
„I think people will compare it to SLAYER. I’m not afraid of that because I think it can compete with anything we’ve done in our history, both musically and performance-wise.“ Nevertheless: „There will be people who complain: ‚Why does it sound like SLAYER‘ and ‚Why doesn’t it sound like SLAYER anymore‘? That’s just what people do.“
Conclusion
I agree with King one hundred per cent; „From Hell I Rise“ easily holds its own with anything SLAYER have ever released. It’s an album that will be one of the best of the current year – and not just for thrash metal fans. Buy it!
