Also, wer es hier richtig schwer haben will, muss mir einerseits eine solche Genrebezeichnung in die Fresse hauen und andererseits eine Konstellation wählen, welche bei mir automatisch und bewusst und sowieso mit einer meiner absoluten Lieblingsbands assoziiert wird – ARCH ENEMY. Darum gleich vorneweg – IRONY OF FATE haben nicht den Hauch einer Chance!
Aber halt – das hat auch sonst keine FFMDM – Band, nicht einmal JINJER. AE speilen halt in einer eigenen Liga, also…
Warum bespreche ich dann ein Album und ziehe den Vergleich zur Überband? Weil, wer in der Musikszene als Spitzenband rauskommen will, sich mit den Besten messen muss, zur Spitze streben und sich daran allenfalls aufreiben.
Auf diesen Weg hat sich das Berner Quintett IRONY OF FATE gemacht. Zur Band gehören die Sängerin mit dem unaussprechlichen Namen Cveti Stojmenova, Raffael Kühni und Lars Gygax an den Gitarren, Tom Zürcher am Bass und Greg Bucher an den Drums.
Die Harteisen-Kapelle hat sich bereits eine ansehnliche Fanbase erspielt und ist über die Eidgenossenschaft hinaus bekannt. Sie haben schon mit ansehnlichen Namen gespielt – beispielsweise JINJER oder NERVOSA. Soviel zur Mannschaft, wenden wir uns dem organisierten Lärm zu.

Wie gesagt, mit der Genrebezeichnung kann man mich jagen – was nämlich sagt es über die Musik aus, wenn „female fronted“ dasteht? Nichts, null nada, denn das sind MADONNA, LADY GAGA, gar BRITNEY SPEARS auch! Wir lernen trotzdem – am Mikrofon steht also ein nettes Mädel mit verträumtem Blick und einer richtig bösen Stimme – wirklich! Ohne Zweifel, growlen kann die gute Cveti, sie deckt stimmlich den Rest der Band sauber ab. Greg legt dazu einen soliden Teppich aus Double Blasts, die Gitarren wummern zusammen mit dem Bass in die Magengrube – was will man mehr von melodischem Todeseisen? Wenig, vielleicht etwas mehr Abwechslung, etwas mehr Risiko.
Ich gestehe, die Kapelle hat mich mit dem einen oder anderen Songeinstieg grandios geärgert. Beim Titeltrack „Wicked & Divine“ habe ich irgendwie etwas anderes erwartet – zum Beispiel einen etwas leichteren Track, vielleicht sogar clear gesungen?
„Vengeance“ hat mich an meine zweite, absolute Lieblings-Melodic Death Metal Band erinnert – AMON AMARTH. Aber eben auch nur während der ersten Takte. Aber, ein Brecher ist der Albumopener auf jeden Fall.
Das ist ein Attribut, welches man auch dem gesamten Album verleihen kann, ein echter „wrecking ball“. Die Band schenkt sich ncihts und hat sich gegenüber dem Debut von 2018 nochmals gesteigert, ist reifer und treffsicherer geworden.

Fazit

Was ich mir wünsche – auch wenn Weihnachten schon vorbei ist; etwas mehr Kreativität, Mut zum Risiko, Überraschungen. Ich weiss, damit tun sich viele Metalbands schwer. Wer seinen Stil einmal gefunden hat, unternimmt wenig Anstrengungen, daran viel zu ändern – wegend er Fanbase oder so. Ich fände es trotzdem spannend – schliesslich liebe ich Alyssa White Gluz‘ Cleansongs ebenso wie die gegrowlten Vorschlaghämmer. Also, nur Mut! Empfehlung; das Album darf man kaufen, es macht bestimmt jedem „melodisch-toten-Hartmetalls-mit-einer-Frau-am-Mikrofon-die-growlt“ – Fan Spass – und ihr unterstützt eine Schweizer Band, die Hoffnung auf mehr macht!

So, if you want to have a really hard time here, you have to punch me in the face with such a genre designation on the one hand and on the other hand choose a constellation which is automatically and consciously and anyway associated with one of my absolute favourite bands – ARCH ENEMY. So right from the start – IRONY OF FATE don’t stand a chance!
But wait – no other FFMDM band has that, not even JINJER. AE are in a league of their own, so…
So why am I reviewing an album and comparing it to the over-the-top band? Because if you want to be a top band in the music scene, you have to measure yourself against the best, strive for the top and wear yourself out.
This is the path the Bernese quintet IRONY OF FATE has taken. The band includes the singer with the unpronounceable name Cveti Stojmenova, Raffael Kühni and Lars Gygax on guitars, Tom Zürcher on bass and Greg Bucher on drums.
The Harteisen band has already acquired a respectable fan base and is known beyond the borders of the Swiss Confederation. They have already played with respectable names – for example JINJER or NERVOSA. So much for the team, let’s turn to the organised noise.

As I said, you can hunt me down with the genre description – what does it say about the music when it says „female fronted“? Nothing, zero nada, because so are MADONNA, LADY GAGA, even BRITNEY SPEARS! We learn anyway – so at the microphone is a nice girl with a dreamy look and a really wicked voice – really! Without a doubt, good Cveti can growl, she covers the rest of the band vocally cleanly. Greg lays a solid carpet of double blasts, the guitars rumble together with the bass in the pit of the stomach – what more do you want from melodic death iron? Little, maybe a little more variety, a little more risk.
I confess, the band annoyed me grandiosely with one or the other song opening. With the title track „Wicked & Divine“ I somehow expected something else – for example a somewhat lighter track, maybe even sung clear?
„Vengeance“ reminded me of my second, absolute favourite Melodic Death Metal band – AMON AMARTH. But only during the first bars. But the album opener is definitely a breaker.
This is an attribute that can also be given to the whole album, a real „wrecking ball“. The band doesn’t give itself anything and has improved again compared to the debut of 2018, has become more mature and more accurate.

Conclusion

What I wish for – even if Christmas is already over; a bit more creativity, courage to take risks, surprises. I know that many metal bands have a hard time with that. Once you’ve found your style, you don’t make much effort to change it – because of your fanbase or something. I would still find it exciting – after all, I love Alyssa White Gluz‘ cleansongs as much as the growled sledgehammers. So, go for it! Recommendation; you can buy the album, it will surely be fun for every „melodic-dead-hard-metal-with-a-woman-at-the-microphone-who-growls“ – fan – and you support a Swiss band that gives hope for more!
