HAMMERFALL braucht man in der Metalszene niemandem mehr vorzustellen – die Band gehört längst zu den Klassikern, zu den Kultbands. Ihre Fanbase garantiert für volle Hallen und wogende Battlegrounds.
Beinahe 30 Jahre sind HAMMERFALL unterwegs, die aktuelle Besetzung mit Joacim Cans (Gesang seit 1996), Oscar Dronjak (Gitarre seit 1993), Pontus Norgren (Gitarre seit 2008), David Wallin (Schlagzeug von 2014–2016, seit 2017) und Fredrik Larsson (Bass 1994–1997, seit 2007) scheint stabil. Mittlerweile haben HAMMERFALL elf Studioalben veröffentlicht, „Hammer Of Dawn“ macht das Dutzend voll. Wie die letzten beiden Alben wird auch die aktuelle Scheibe bei Napalm Records veröffentlicht. Dass HAMMERFALL in den letzten beinahe 30 Jahren jeden relevanten Konzertsaal und jedes nennenswerte Openair-Festival bespielt haben, versteht sich von selbst. Und nicht zuletzt ihr Livealbum „Gates Of Dalhalla“ haben ihren Ruf als Kultkapelle besiegelt.
Was das Album musikalisch bietet? HAMMERFALL at its best! Selbstverständlich bleiben die Männer ihrem Sound treu, spielen nach wie vor klaren Heavy Powermetal der melodischen und nicht ganz so harten Art. Joacim Cans Falsettstimme trägt nach wie vor den Hauptteil zum unverkennbaren Stil der Band bei, wird dabei aber tatkräftig von einer technisch perfekten Band unterstützt:
Jeder Ton sitzt, jeder Doubleblast passt, jedes Solo überzeugt musikalisch als auch technisch. Die Jungs sind zu lange im Geschäft, als dass sie sich hier Schwachheiten leisten würden.
Mir gefallen besonders „Too Old To Die Young“, ein rhythmisch anspruchsvolles Brett vor dem Herrn. Klar, eine Ballade darf nicht fehlen, „Not Today“ übernimmt diesen Part. Cans zeigt dabei seine Klasse und demonstriert eindrücklich, weshalb er zur Spitze der genialen Metalsänger gehört.
Ein gelungener Opener auf dem Album ist die Abrissbirne „Brotherhood“, welche bereits vorab inklusive Video veröffentlicht wurde. Und zuletzt ist da noch „Live Free Or Die“, ein Song, den man getrost als sehr typisch für HAMMERFALL nennen kann – eine Hymne mit viel Drive und Abwechslung, dem bekannten Doublebass , dem fetten Riffing und der charismatischen Stimme.
Fazit
In fast dreissig Bühnenjahren ein Dutzend Alben, das ist eine Hausnummer. Wenn dann das neueste Album noch gelungen ist und so frisch und gekonnt wirkt wie die früheren Werke, dann hat eine Band vieles richtig gemacht. Bei „Hammer Of Dawn“ machen HAMMERFALL eigentlich alles richtig. Empfehlung; kaufen!

HAMMERFALL needs no introduction to anyone in the metal scene – the band has long been one of the classics, one of the cult bands. Their fanbase guarantees full halls and surging battlegrounds.
Nearly 30 years HAMMERFALL have been on the road, the current line-up with Joacim Cans (vocals since 1996), Oscar Dronjak (guitar since 1993), Pontus Norgren (guitar since 2008), David Wallin (drums from 2014-2016, since 2017) and Fredrik Larsson (bass 1994-1997, since 2007) seems stable. By now, HAMMERFALL have released eleven studio albums, „Hammer Of Dawn“ makes the dozen full. Like the last two albums, the current disc is also released by Napalm Records. It goes without saying that HAMMERFALL have played every relevant concert hall and every noteworthy open-air festival in the last almost 30 years. And not least their live album „Gates Of Dalhalla“ have sealed their reputation as a cult band.
What does the album offer musically? HAMMERFALL at its best! Of course, the men stay true to their sound, still playing clear heavy powermetal of the melodic and not so heavy kind. Joacim Can’s falsetto voice still contributes the main part to the unmistakable style of the band, but is actively supported by a technically perfect band:
Every note fits, every doubleblast fits, every solo convinces musically as well as technically. The guys have been in the business too long to allow themselves any weaknesses here.
I especially like „Too Old To Die Young“, a rhythmically demanding song. Of course, a ballad should not be missing, „Not Today“ takes over this part. Cans shows his class and demonstrates impressively why he belongs to the top of the brilliant metal singers.
A successful opener on the album is the wrecking ball „Brotherhood“, which was already released in advance including a video. And last but not least there is „Live Free Or Die“, a song that can be called very typical for HAMMERFALL – an anthem with a lot of drive and variety, the well-known double bass , the fat riffing and the charismatic voice.
conclusion
A dozen albums in almost thirty years on stage is quite a feat. If then the latest album is still successful and comes across as fresh and skilful as the earlier works, then a band has done a lot right. With „Hammer Of Dawn“ HAMMERFALL actually do everything right. Recommendation; buy!
