Auch wenn uns Corona nicht in Ruhe lässt und wir die Truppe so bald nicht auf den Bühnen sehen dürften – die Rockgiganten um Dave Grohl knallen uns ihr neuestes Machwerk vor den Latz!

Also, vergesst mal gleich, dass diese Review neutral und einzig bezogen auf die musikalischen Details ist. Das funktioniert nicht, schliesslich bin ich davon überzeugt, dass hier eine der grössten Rockbands ever aufspielt, von deren Sound ich begeistert und von deren immensen Bühnenpräsenz ich jeweils geplättet bin.
Muss man hier aufzählen, wer zur Truppe gehört? Nein, kann man aber doch, möglicherweise gibt es ja noch Jemanden, der die Band nicht kennt. Hääh?
Also, Frontmann Dave Grohl (Gesang und Gitarre) war ursprünglich mal Drummer bei den Grunge-Kultern von NIRVANA und hat sich glücklicherweise entschieden, eine neue Band zu gründen und dort den Sechssaiter zu bedienen und zu singen. Seit 1997 wird er unterstützt durch den ehemaligen Drummer von ALANIS MORISETTE, Taylor Hawkins. Bereits 1995 kamen Nate Mendel am Bass und Pat Smear an der Gitarre dazu. Smear führte ähnlich wie Keyboarder Rami Jaffee eine Art on-off-Beziehung mit der Band, sie waren zeitweise „nur“ als Live- und Sessionmusiker dabei.
Last but überhaupt not least wäre da noch Leadgitarrist Chris Shiflett, der seit 1999 das Stromruder bedient. Es scheint, dass den Jungs die Weiterentwicklung aus dem Grunge gutgetan hat – sie leben alle noch und sind psychisch gesund – nehme ich mal an.
Der letzte Auftritt der Band war übrigens an einer geschichtsträchtigen Veranstaltung; der Inauguration von JOE BIDEN, dem neuen Präsidenten der USA. WAs der draufhat, muss er erst zeigen – sein Musikgeschmack stimmt aber schon einmal.

Zum Album gibt es zuerst Eines zu sagen – da ist pure Kreativität und Abwechslung angesagt. Nachdem mit „Making A Fire“ ein rhytmisch typischer FF-Midtempo-Track das Album eröffnet, schliesst es mit „Love Dies Young“ ab, einem Track der ein ziemlich typisches Siebzigerjahre-Riffing bringt, selbstverständlich auf aktuellem technischen Niveau. Typisch Siebziger? Klar, schon einmal „Barracuda“ von HEART aus dem Jahr 1977 gehört? Also!
Natürlich können Grohl und Co. auch Balladen – „Chasing Birds“ ist ein gutes Beispiel dafür. Sehr cool, weil so richtig groovig ist auch „Shame Shame, da schwimmt die Band schon im benachbarten Teich des guten, alten PRINCE – Hammer! Ebenfalls als Ballade schlägt „Waiting On A War“ auf, zumindest am Anfang. Im zweiten Teil geht der Track dermassen ab – eine typische,sehr starker Rocknummer aus dem Hause FOO FIGHTERS. Auch der Titeltrack „Medicine At Midnight“ verbaut funkige Elemente, besonders in der Bassline und bei der Percussion. „No Son Of Mine“ wiederum stellt das dar, was die FOO FIGHTERS seit jeher auszeichnen – fetten Rock mit einem guten Schuss Punk – der Track marschiert unerbittlich vorwärts und kennt kein Halten. Garantie; wenn der live gespielt werden wird, tobt die Meute!
„Holding Poison“ zeichnet sich durch seine Choralparts aus und lässt den instrumentalen Passagen mehr Platz als andere Tracks – ein Ausdruck der musikalischen und kompositorischen Qualität der Band. „Cloudspotter finde ich den durchschnittlichsten Track. Rhythmisch ist er durchaus spannend, ansonsten holt er mich am wenigsten ab. Nichts desto trotz dürfte auch das ein Song sein, der vielen Fans gefallen wird – und der grosses Livepotenzial hat.

Fazit

Man kann es drehen und wenden, wie man es will; die FOO FIGHTERS haben wiederum ein Album geschaffen, das in die einigermassen ernst zu nehmende CD-Sammlung gehört. Klar, kann man auch digital speichern, besser noch legt man sich die orange Vinyl-Version zu und macht damit dem guten alten Plattenspieler wieder Freude. Empfehlung? Ganz klar kaufen – sonst seid ihr selber schuld!

So, forget that this review is neutral and only about the musical details. That doesn’t work, because I’m convinced that this is one of the greatest rock bands ever, whose sound I’m thrilled by and whose immense stage presence I’m always blown away by.
Is it necessary to list the members of the band? No, but you can, maybe there’s someone else who doesn’t know the band. Eh?
Well, frontman Dave Grohl (vocals and guitar) was originally the drummer for the grunge cult band NIRVANA and fortunately decided to form a new band to play the six-string and sing. Since 1997 he is supported by the former drummer of ALANIS MORISETTE, Taylor Hawkins. Already in 1995, Nate Mendel on bass and Pat Smear on guitar joined the band. Smear, like keyboardist Rami Jaffee, had a kind of on-off relationship with the band, they were at times „only“ there as live and session musicians.
Last but not least, there is lead guitarist Chris Shiflett, who has been at the helm since 1999. It seems that the evolution from grunge has done the guys good – they are all still alive and mentally healthy – I guess.
By the way, the band’s last gig was at a historic event; the inauguration of JOE BIDEN, the new president of the USA. He has yet to show what he can do – but his taste in music is already right.

There is one thing to say about the album – pure creativity and variety are the order of the day. After „Making A Fire“, a rhythmically typical FF midtempo track opens the album, it closes with „Love Dies Young“, a track that brings a pretty typical seventies riffing, of course on a current technical level. Typical seventies? Sure, ever heard „Barracuda“ by HEART from 1977? Well!
Of course Grohl and Co. can also play ballads – „Chasing Birds“ is a good example. Very cool, because it’s really groovy, is „Shame Shame“, where the band is already swimming in the neighbouring pond of good old PRINCE – awesome! Waiting On A War“ is also a ballad, at least at the beginning. In the second part, the track goes off the hook – a typical, very strong rock number from the FOO FIGHTERS. The title track „Medicine At Midnight“ also incorporates funky elements, especially in the bassline and percussion. „No Son Of Mine“, on the other hand, represents what has always distinguished the FOO FIGHTERS – fat rock with a good shot of punk – the track marches relentlessly forward and knows no stopping. Guarantee; when it’s played live, the crowd will go wild!
„Holding Poison“ stands out with its choral parts and leaves more room for instrumental passages than other tracks – an expression of the band’s musical and compositional quality. I find „Cloudspotter“ the most average track. Rhythmically it is quite exciting, otherwise it gets me the least. Nevertheless, this should be a song that many fans will like – and that has great live potential.

Conclusion

You can twist and turn it however you like; the FOO FIGHTERS have once again created an album that belongs in a CD collection that can be taken reasonably seriously. Of course, you can also save it digitally, but it’s even better to get the orange vinyl version and make the good old record player happy again. Recommendation? Buy it – otherwise it’s your own fault!
