Gerade noch im alten Jahr hauen die Mittelalterrocker von FEUERSCHWANZ ihr zehntes Album raus – die zweite Scheibe unter dem Label von NAPALM RECORDS.

Mittelalterrock aus Deutschland zuhause bei NAPALM RECORDS
FEUERSCHWANZ sind seit vielen Jahren eine Institution, wenn es um mittelalterlich angehauchten Folkrock geht. Neben ihren ausgefallenen Klamotten fallen die Jungs und Mädels immer wieder durch die musikalischen Ingredienzien auf, welche teilweise harten Metal mit Folk verbinden. Nun ist die Mischung nicht ganz neu, FEUERSCHWANZ sind nicht alleine auf diesem Markt. SALTATIO MORTIS oder Schandmaul etwa fischen in denselben Gewässern.
Hebt sich die Truppe irgendwie ab? Bringen sie auf den neuen Album Unerwartetes? Schauen wir uns mal an, was Hauptmann Feuerschwanz (Gesang, Akustik-Gitarre), Johanna von der Vögelweide alias Stephanie Pracht (Geige, Drehleier), Hans der Aufrechte alias Hans Platz (E-Gitarre), Prinz R. Hodenherz III alias Ben Metzner (Akustik-Gitarre, Flöten, Rauschpfeife, Dudelsack, Gesang), Jarne Hodinsson alias Jan Jamaszyk (Bass), Rollo H. Schönhaar alias Rolf Hering (Schlagzeug) sowie Mieze Musch-Musch (Performance und Tanz) und Mieze Myu alias Jenny Diehl (Performance, Tanz und Harfe) uns zu bieten hat.
Musikalisch sind sich die Recken – gottseidank – treu geblieben. FEUERSCHWANZ stehen auch auf dem neuen Album für harte Metalriffs, gekoppelt mit melodiösem, mehrstimmigen Gesang und einer Vielzahl an alten Instrumenten. Glücklicherweise nehmen sie auch den Mund weiterhin voll, kümmern sich nciht allzusehr um politische Korrektheit – auch wenn die textlichen Ausrufezeichen nicht so deutlich sind wie damals mit „Sex Is Muss“.
Gleich zu Beginn; jawoll, es gibt wieder Songs, die sich in Kürze zu Mitsingnummern an den Konzerten und Festivals entwickeln werden – so diese denn bald wieder stattfinden.
FEUERSCHWANZ verstehen es, Hookliner zu produzieren, die so schön klingen und fast vergessen machen, wofür die Lieder stehen. Beispielsweise „Krampus“ klingt wie ein Trinklied, es handelt jedoch von der Sagengestalt, die in den Bergtälern Deutschlands und Österreichs, im Südtirol und in Norditalien aber auch bis nach Slowenien und Ungarn ihr Unwesen treibt. In der SChweiz heisst der schweigsame, dunkle gesell, welcher den Nikolaus begleitet, schlicht und einfach „Schmutzli“. Zugegeben, „Krampus“ klingt als Songtitel definitiv cooler. Mir persönlich gefällt ja der Track zum Reitervolk der „Rohirrim“ aus „Herr der Ringe“. Da treffen fette Riffwände auf Geigen und Flöten, die markigen Stimmen skandieren „Reitet, ihr Rohirrim!“ und die monumentalen Bilder aus den bekannten Filmen tauchen sofort am Horizont auf.
FEUERSCHWANZ können aber auch ruhig und besinnlich, auf „Memento Mori“ ist es die Ballade „Das Herz Eines Drachen“. Die Ballade ist kraftvoll und zeitlos, allerdings auch jener Track, der gewisse gesanglichen Schwächen entlarvt. Die ersten Takte des Liedleins überzeugen nicht, erst im Verlauf des Songs erstarken die Stimmen, werden der epischen Kraft des Songs gerecht.
Richtig zu fetzen vermag auch „Hannibal“, die Geschichte des nordafrikanischen Heerführers, welcher mit Elefanten die Alpen überquerte und beinahe das römische Reich in die Knie zwang. Die Doubleblasts, die knackigen Gitarrenriffs, die Fiedeln und ein Hammersolo vom aufrechten Hans machen diesen Song zu einem der besten auf dem Album.
Fazit
Kurz und gut; mir gefällt das Album. Es macht Lust auf Sommerfestivals mit Fleisch vom Grill und Bier oder Met, am liebsten hornweise. Damit die Vorfreude aufrecht erhalten werden kann – kauft euch getrost diese Scheibe und reitet mit den „Rohirrim“ in die Schlacht – oder ins neue Jahr!

Medieval rock from Germany at home on NAPALM RECORDS
FEUERSCHWANZ have been an institution when it comes to medieval-inspired folk rock for many years. Besides their fancy clothes, the guys and girls always stand out because of their musical ingredients, which partly combine hard metal with folk. Now the mixture is not entirely new, FEUERSCHWANZ are not alone in this market. SALTATIO MORTIS or Schandmaul, for example, fish in the same waters.
Does the troupe stand out somehow? Do they bring the unexpected on the new album? Let’s take a look at what Hauptmann Feuerschwanz (vocals, acoustic guitar), Johanna von der Vögelweide alias Stephanie Pracht (violin, hurdy-gurdy), Hans der Aufrechte alias Hans Platz (electric guitar), Prinz R. Hodenherz III alias Ben Metzner (acoustic guitar, flutes, noise whistle, bagpipes, vocals), Jarne Hodinsson alias Jan Jamaszyk (bass), Rollo H. Schönhaar alias Rolf Hering (drums) as well as Mieze Musch-Musch (performance and dance) and Mieze Myu alias Jenny Diehl (performance, dance and harp) to offer us.
Musically, the warriors have – thank God – remained true to themselves. FEUERSCHWANZ also stand for hard metal riffs on the new album, coupled with melodic, polyphonic vocals and a variety of old instruments. Fortunately, they also keep their mouths full, not caring too much about political correctness – even if the lyrical exclamation marks are not as clear as back then with „Sex Is Muss“.
Right at the beginning; yes, there are songs again that will soon become sing-along numbers at concerts and festivals – if they take place again soon.
FEUERSCHWANZ know how to produce hookliners that sound so beautiful and almost make you forget what the songs stand for. For example, „Krampus“ sounds like a drinking song, but it’s about the mythical creature that wreaks havoc in the mountain valleys of Germany and Austria, in South Tyrol and northern Italy, but also as far away as Slovenia and Hungary. In Switzerland, the silent, dark figure who accompanies St. Nicholas is simply called „Schmutzli“. Admittedly, „Krampus“ definitely sounds cooler as a song title. Personally, I like the track about the horsemen of the „Rohirrim“ from „Lord of the Rings“. Fat riff walls meet violins and flutes, the pithy voices chant „Ride, you Rohirrim!“ and the monumental images from the well-known films immediately appear on the horizon.
FEUERSCHWANZ can also be quiet and contemplative, on „Memento Mori“ it is the ballad „Das Herz Eines Drachen“. The ballad is powerful and timeless, but also the track that exposes certain vocal weaknesses. The first bars of the song are not convincing, only in the course of the song do the voices become stronger and do justice to the epic power of the song.
„Hannibal“, the story of the North African army leader who crossed the Alps with elephants and almost brought the Roman Empire to its knees, is also a real tearjerker. The doubleblasts, the crunchy guitar riffs, the fiddles and a hammer solo by the upright Hans make this song one of the best on the album.
conclusion
Short and sweet; I like the album. It makes me want to go to summer festivals with grilled meat and beer or mead, preferably by the horn. To keep the anticipation going – buy this disc with confidence and ride into battle with the „Rohirrim“ – or into the new year!
