Mit Kreativität und Corona ist das so eine Sache. Da bringt man 2020 oder wie im Fall der italienischen FALSE MEMORIES Anfang 2021 ein Album raus und kann damit nicht auf Tour gehen. Was also tun mit der so gewonnenen Freizeit? Man könnte ein neues Album aufnehmen. Aber weil Kreativität nun mal nicht auf Bäumen wächst, muss ein Cover-Album mit den wichtigsten Einflüssen reichen. Und wenn das sogar DEEP PURPLE machen dürfen, dann dürfen das alle anderen erst recht!
Und so befinden sich auf «Echoes Of A Reflection» fünf Coverversionen aus unterschiedlichen Epochen des Gothic-Rock und -Metal, welche die Mitglieder von FALSE MEMORIES auf ihrer Reise durch die Musikwelt geprägt, beeindruckt und inspiriert haben. Rossella Moscatello trägt die Songs mit ihrer gewaltigen Stimme. Eine druckvolle und fette Produktion gibt den Stücken einen Hauch von Bombast gegenüber ihren teilweise über 25 Jahre alten Originalen. Davon abgesehen halten sich FALSE MEMORIES leider sehr stark an die Ursprungs-Arrangements und verpassen es, den Covers eine richtig eigene Note zu verleihen, was zu einigen spannenden Momenten hätte führen können.
Fazit
Persönlich bin ich kein Freund von ganzen Cover-Alben oder Hommagen an musikalische Heldinnen und Helden. Einzelne Covers immer gerne, sofern sie sowohl den Spirit des Originals als auch die Eigenheiten der covernden Band transportieren können. Zumindest zweiteres fehlt bei «Echoes Of A Relfection», was den Mehrwert der EP sowohl für Fans von FALSE MEMORIES als auch der Original-Versionen kaum erkennbar macht. Ich halte mich da lieber an den Zweitling der Band, «The Last Night Of Fall».

With creativity and Corona, it’s one thing. You release an album in 2020 or, as in the case of the Italian FALSE MEMORIES, at the beginning of 2021 and can’t go on tour with it. So what do you do with the free time you’ve gained? You could record a new album. But because creativity doesn’t grow on trees, a cover album with the most important influences will have to do. And if even DEEP PURPLE are allowed to do that, then everyone else is even more so!
And so on „Echoes Of A Reflection“ are five cover versions from different eras of gothic rock and metal that have influenced, impressed and inspired the members of FALSE MEMORIES on their journey through the music world. Rossella Moscatello carries the songs with her powerful voice. A punchy and fat production gives the tracks a touch of bombast compared to their originals, some of which are over 25 years old. Apart from that, FALSE MEMORIES unfortunately stick very much to the original arrangements and miss to give the covers a real own touch, which could have led to some exciting moments.
conclusion
Personally, I’m not a fan of whole cover albums or tributes to musical heroines and heroes. Individual covers are always welcome, as long as they can convey both the spirit of the original and the idiosyncrasies of the covering band. At least the latter is missing on „Echoes Of A Relfection“, which makes the added value of the EP hardly recognisable for fans of both FALSE MEMORIES and the original versions. I’d rather stick to the band’s sophomore album, „The Last Night Of Fall“.
