Sorry Freunde, da könnt ihr jammern, soviel ihr wollt – 2021 wird definitiv kein besseres Album aus dem Rock- und Metalbereich mehr erscheinen, als „The Bitter Truth“ von EVANESCENCE.

Satte zehn Jahre hat sich eine der besten Rockbands der Welt Zeit gelassen, um den darbenden Fans wieder Musik zu schenken. Die Wartezeit hatte bestimmt nicht damit zu tun, dass der Band keine Songs eingefallen wären. Fronterin Amy Lee hat vielmehr dem Umstand Rechnung getragen, dass sie Mutter ist und Zeit für ihr Kind haben will, solange es aufwächst. Hat Amy Lee schon einmal halbe Sachen gemacht?

Nope; die Fronterin hat gemeinsam mit Basser Tim McCord, Drummer Will Hunt sowie dem Gitarristen Troy McLawhorn und ihrer Mitkämpferin Jen Majura an Mikrofon und Gitarre mal eben ein Comeback hingelegt, dass sich mehr als gewaschen hat.
Ich war schon lange nicht mehr versucht, einer Scheibe 5+ zu geben – bei „The Bitter Truth“ hätte ich diese Regel beinahe gebrochen und mich dem Rock-News-Fegefeuer ausgeliefert. Langer Rede kurzer Sinn; was erscheint da am 26. März?

Ein ganzen Dutzend Tracks hat die Band auf der Scheibe verewigt, und alle sind auf ihre Art grossartig. Kleiner Tipp gleich zu Beginn; wenn du das Album nicht mit genügend Power hören kannst, dann lass es – es würde ihm einfach nicht gerecht!
Der beste Track? Klar; „Wasted On You“! Was Amy Lee hier für einmal mehr mit ihrer unglaublichen Stimme veranstaltet, ist unglaublich. Das geht durch Mark und Bein und wenn dann der Text beginnt, hast du Gänsehaut pur – versprochen! „Ich brauche keine Drogen, ich bin schon unter der Erde, verschwendet an dich. Ich warte auf ein Wunder und kann nicht weitermachen – es fühlt sich an, als wären wir in der Zeit eingefroren…“ Die EVANESCENCE Sängerin war schon immer dafür bekannt, tiefgründiger und nachdenklicher als andere Künstler zu sein – und das mit einer musikalischen Genialität und Energie zu verbinden, wie es nur wenige können. „Wasted On You“ setzt gleich noch einen drauf auf die beiden Überhits „Immortal“ und „Bring Me to Live“ – nach fünfundzwanzig Jahren auf der Bühne liefert Amy Lee ab, als ob sie gerade voll jugendlichem Übermut und Genialität angefangen hätte, Musik zu machen. Grossartig!

Der Fluch an dem Album? Es gibt keine schlechten Songs, nicht einmal solche, die abfallen.
Nehmen wir zum Beispiel „Take Cover“ – ein absolutes Brett, megafettes Riffing, Drums und Bass mit einem unglaublichen Druck und über allem immer wieder diese Stimme – besser geht einfach nicht.
Musikalisch lebt das Album von den lauten, harten Tönen ebenso wie von den leisen; „Far From Heaven“ zeigt die beeindruckende Dynamik, die wechselnden Stimmfarben einer Frau, welcher kein Attribut unter „genial“ nur einigermassen gerecht wird. Diese Ballade lässt dir von Anfang bis Ende Schauer des Rückgrat hinunterkriechen – ich hatte permanent das Bedürfnis, meine Anlage noch etwas höher zu schrauben. Wie viele Bands und Künstler nehmen für sich in Anspruch, ehrlich und authentisch zu sein – Amy Lee ist es einfach. So kann man nicht singen, solche Musik kann man nicht schreiben, wenn es nicht tief aus deinem Innern kommt!

Ich könnte jetzt zu jedem Song etwas schreiben, aufzeigen, was jeden einzelnen einzigartig macht – aber es lohnt nicht – du musst es hören, anders geht es nicht. Dazu gibt es immerhin schon fast die Hälfte der Tracks als Video oder zumindest Lyricvideo. Für einmal haben wir alle hier eingebaut.

Fazit

Wie gesagt, da kommt das beste Album 2021 auf den Markt! Ich sehe keine andere Band am Horizont, welche dieses Jahres etwas annähernd gleichwertiges oder gar besseres bringen könnte. Wer sich das Album nicht kauft oder runterlädt oder streamt oder klaut ist selber schuld – „The Bitter Truth“ ist ein absolutes Muss!

One of the best rock bands in the world took a full ten years to bring music back to their starving fans. The wait certainly had nothing to do with the fact that the band couldn’t think of any songs. Fronter Amy Lee rather took into account the fact that she is a mother and wants to have time for her child while it is growing up. Has Amy Lee ever done things by halves?
Nope; together with bassist Tim McCord, drummer Will Hunt as well as guitarist Troy McLawhorn and her fellow combatant Jen Majura on microphone and guitar, the frontwoman has made a comeback that is more than worthwhile.
It’s been a long time since I was tempted to give a disc 5+ – with „The Bitter Truth“ I almost broke that rule and gave myself over to rock news purgatory. Long story short; what’s coming out on 26 March?

The band has immortalised a whole dozen tracks on the disc, and all of them are great in their own way. A little tip right at the beginning; if you can’t listen to the album with enough power, don’t – it just wouldn’t do it justice!
The best track? Sure; „Wasted On You“! What Amy Lee does here for once again with her incredible voice is unbelievable. It goes through your marrow and when the lyrics start, you have pure goosebumps – I promise! „I don’t need drugs, I’m already underground, wasted on you. I’m waiting for a miracle and I can’t move on – it feels like we’re frozen in time…“ The EVANESCENCE singer has always been known for being deeper and more thoughtful than other artists – and combining that with a musical genius and energy that few can match. „Wasted On You“ follows up on the two über-hits „Immortal“ and „Bring Me to Live“ – after twenty-five years on stage, Amy Lee delivers as if she had just started making music full of youthful exuberance and genius. Great!

The curse of the album? There are no bad songs, not even those that fall off.
Take „Take Cover“ for example – an absolute board, mega fat riffing, drums and bass with an unbelievable pressure and above all this voice again and again – it simply doesn’t get any better than that.
Musically, the album lives from the loud, hard tones as well as from the quiet ones; „Far From Heaven“ shows the impressive dynamics, the changing vocal colours of a woman, which no attribute under „brilliant“ can do justice to. This ballad sends shivers down your spine from start to finish – I permanently felt the need to turn up my stereo a little higher. How many bands and artists claim to be honest and authentic – Amy Lee simply is. You can’t sing like that, you can’t write music like that, if it doesn’t come from deep inside you!

I could write something about each song now, point out what makes each one unique – but it’s not worth it – you have to hear it, there’s no other way. After all, almost half of the tracks are already available as videos or at least lyric videos. For once, we’ve put them all in here.

Conclusion

As I said, the best album of 2021 is coming out! I don’t see any other band on the horizon that could bring something even close to the same or even better this year. If you don’t buy or download or stream or steal this album, it’s your own fault – „The Bitter Truth“ is an absolute must!
