Zak Stevens – Leadvocals, Ralf Scheepers – Leadvocals, Carsten „Lizard“ Schulz – Leadvocals, Roland Moschel – Hammond Organ, Markus Pfeffer – Leadguitars, Wolfgang Sing – Leadguitars, Sabrina Roth – Backingvocals und Stephan Hugo – Backingvocals – diese illustre Truppe hat Guitarrist, Basser und Programmierer Juergen Walzer um sich geschart, um das dritte Konzeptalbum über den Protagonisten Josh Devon zu schreiben, einzuspielen und heute zu veröffentlichen.
Mich interessieren die Geschichten in Konzeptalben eher selten, da sie meist nicht zu den literarischen Highlights zählen und für das musikalische Werk eher zweitrangig sind. Das ist nicht negativ zu verstehen, sondern hat damit zu tun, dass ich Musiker gerne an dem messe, woran sie gemessen werden sollten – an ihrer Musik. Also lasse ich mich auch dieses Mal kaum auf die Geschichte dieses Kampfes gegen die eigenen Dämonen ein, auf das Mädchen Marion Dust – welches, wie schon der Titel erahnen lässt, im Mittelpunkt des Interesses steht.
Viel spannender finde ich da, wen Komponist Walzer alles aufgefahren hat, um seinem neuesten Meisterwerk – und das ist es durchaus – Leben einzuhauchen. Neben Cartsen Schulz und Markus Pfeffer von LAZARUS DREAM ist das insbesondere PRIMAL FEAR Fronter Zak Stevens, welcher unbestritten zu den Grossen des Genres gehört. In diesem Fall natürlich nicht des Progmetal, sondern eher des klassischen, powervollen Heavy Metal mit viel Hardrockattitüde.
Und das Album; ja, es erzählt die oben erwähnte Geschichte, mich fasziniert aber eher die musikalische Umsetzung. Progmetal ist meist so eine Sache. Oft sind die Werke musikalisch komplex, häufig zu komplex. Viele Bands bemühen sich, all ihr musikalisches Können zu integrieren und bei jedem Album die volle Ladung abzufeuern – was dann oft in einer Überdosis endet. Konzerte und Alben, welche nach einer gewissen Zeit ihre Faszination verlieren, weil das Können der einzelnen Musiker wichtiger ist als das Gesamtwerk.
Hier finde ich DISPYRIA eine löbliche Ausnahme. Mein Eindruck – die einzelnen Musiker – insbesondere die verschiedenen Sänger – ordnen ihre persönliche Kompetenz soweit unter, wie es dem Werk dient. Sie tragen ihren Teil bei, um ein stimmiges Produkt zu machen – und steuern gleichzeitig die zentralen Ingredienzen dazu bei. Selbstverständlich funktioniert das nur, wenn die Basis, nämlich die Komposition, auch die entsprechende Qualität liefert – und das schafft Walzer quasi spielend. So zumindest wirkt das ALbum auf mich – trotz der musikalischen Komplexität und der Intensität der Geschichte – hier wäre das also wieder – fühlt sich das Werk „leicht“ an, aus einem Guss, packend und zum Mitgehen, zum Headbangen. Die musikalische Umsetzung genügt sich auch selbst und liefert dabei selbstverständlich das passende Gewand zur futuristischen Geschichte.
Fazit
Prog-Werke sind immer eine Gratwanderung zwischen „Alltagstauglichkeit“ und musikalischem Anspruch. DISPYRIA gelingt dieser Spagat sehr gut. Es spielt nahe an der Liga mit Tobi Sammer’s AVANTASIA und wird auch deren Fans begeistern. Also, kaufen nützt der Band und der eigenen Musiksammlung!

I am rather rarely interested in the stories in concept albums, as they are usually not among the literary highlights and are rather secondary to the musical work. This is not to be understood negatively, but has to do with the fact that I like to measure musicians by what they should be measured by – their music. So this time, too, I hardly get involved in the story of this fight against one’s own demons, in the girl Marion Dust – who, as the title already suggests, is the centre of interest.
I find it much more exciting who composer Walzer has brought in to breathe life into his latest masterpiece – which it certainly is. Besides Cartsen Schulz and Markus Pfeffer from LAZARUS DREAM, this is especially PRIMAL FEAR frontman Zak Stevens, who is undoubtedly one of the greats of the genre. In this case, of course, not prog metal, but rather classic, powerful heavy metal with a lot of hard rock attitude.
And the album; yes, it tells the above mentioned story, but I am more fascinated by the musical realisation. Progmetal is usually such a thing. Often the works are musically complex, often too complex. Many bands try to integrate all their musical skills and fire off the full charge with every album – which then often ends in an overdose. Concerts and albums that lose their fascination after a certain time because the skills of the individual musicians are more important than the overall work.
Here I find DISPYRIA a laudable exception. My impression – the individual musicians – especially the various singers – subordinate their personal competence as far as it serves the work. They contribute their part to make a coherent product – and at the same time contribute the central ingredients to it. Of course, this only works if the basis, namely the composition, also delivers the corresponding quality – and Walzer achieves this almost effortlessly. At least that’s how the album feels to me – despite the musical complexity and the intensity of the story – here we go again – the work feels „light“, from one mould, gripping and to go along with, to headbang. The musical realisation is also self-sufficient and, of course, provides the appropriate garb for the futuristic story.
Conclusion
Prog works are always a tightrope walk between „everyday suitability“ and musical demands. DISPYRIA manages this balancing act very well. It plays close to the league with Tobi Sammer’s AVANTASIA and will also delight their fans. So, buy it for the benefit of the band and your own music collection!
