Rocknews: „Redemption Part 1 – Twisted World“ klingt nach dem Beginn einer größeren Geschichte. Was bedeutet „Redemption“ für euch persönlich und musikalisch?
Vielen Dank für Ihre Fragen! DISPYRIA ist keine klassische Band, sondern ein von mir 2012 gegründetes Projekt, entstanden nach einer schwierigen Zeit. Die Musik begleitet eine fortlaufende Geschichte, die im Mittelpunkt steht und mich persönlich unterstützt hat. Stilistisch lasse ich mich von verschiedensten Einflüssen leiten – ohne Genregrenzen. Rocknews: Wenn ihr „Twisted World“ in wenigen Worten erklären müsstet – was steckt dahinter?
Ist es wirklich eine „Verdrehte Welt“?

Sie ist eine Metapher auf all den Wahnsinn, der momentan so intensiv in der realen Welt sich Bahnen bricht. Nichts scheint mehr ruhig, normal oder entspannt zu sein. Alles scheint an einem Faden zu hängen, der so gespannt ist, dass er nicht mehr anders kann, als zu reißen und alles mit sich in den Abgrund zieht. Also ist die Story, wenn auch eine dunkle Fantasy-Geschichte, gar nicht so weit entfernt von der Realität, zumindest emotional.

Rocknews: Gibt es einen roten Faden oder eine Geschichte, die sich durch das Album zieht?
Wie schon in der ersten Frage beantwortet, beginnt der rote Faden mit dem ersten Titel von Album Nummer 1: „My Hell“ und endet vorerst mit dem Titel „Twisted World“, dem letzten Song des jetzt bald erscheinenden Albums. Die endgültige Auflösung der Geschichte um Josh Devon und Marion Dust (aka Aelyrea) und all ihren auftretenden Persönlichkeiten gibt es mit dem letzten Song des letzten Albums dieses Zirkels „Redemption-II“. Der Plot steht und ich weiß auch schon, wie alles ausgeht.

Rocknews: Wie würdet ihr den Sound von „Redemption Part 1 – Twisted World“ im Vergleich zu euren früheren Releases beschreiben?
Seit dem 2. Album „Dispyria-The Journey to Aelyrea“ sitzt bei der Produktion Markus Teske auf dem Produzenten-Platz. Er produziert unter anderem auch Vandenplas. Ich würde sagen, da hat sich nicht viel geändert. Viel Kraft, schwere Sounds und ein wenig orchestral. Dispyria-Stil halt.

Rocknews: Gab es musikalische Einflüsse (Bands, Genres) die dieses Album besonders geprägt haben?
Die Frage ist nicht leicht zu beantworten. Oft wird behauptet, ich würde Avantasia oder Ayreon nachahmen – das stimmt aber nicht. Ich mag Metal-Opern und orchestralen Rock, was sich auch in meiner Musik widerspiegelt. Letztlich geht es mir darum, mit der Musik die Geschichte zu erzählen. Wie andere meinen Stil einordnen, bleibt ihnen überlassen.

Rocknews: Gab es während der Produktion besondere Herausforderungen oder Momente, die euch im Nachhinein stark in Erinnerung geblieben sind?
Es gibt immer wieder Momente des Zweifelns und Nachdenkens darüber, ob etwas überhaupt möglich ist. Dennoch war die wohl wichtigste Entscheidung, die Visualisierung mit generativer KI umzusetzen. Dadurch konnte ich der Geschichte endlich ein echtes Gesicht geben – die Menschen sehen nun, wie ich mir die Figuren und ihre Interaktionen vorstelle. Da ich das Projekt sowohl inhaltlich als auch visuell komplett allein gestalte, war es mir möglich, eine ansprechende Visualisierung zu erschaffen und gleichzeitig die Produktionskosten vergleichsweise niedrig zu halten.

Rocknews: Welcher Song auf dem Album ist euch persönlich am wichtigsten, oder gefällt euch am besten – und warum?
Jeder Song hat für mich Bedeutung. Besonders „After Dawn“ und „The Revelation“ geben mir emotional Halt – weniger wegen Zak Stevens’ Gesang, sondern weil sie mich inhaltlich und emotional unterstützen.

Rocknews: Wie liefen die Arbeiten an dem neuen Album für euch als Band, war es eine Hand in Hand oder seid ihr auch mal auf unterschiedliche Meinungen untereinander gestoßen?
Da es sich um ein Soloprojekt handelt, erhielten die Gastmusiker und Sänger einen gewissen kreativen Spielraum. Zak Stevens sowie seine Frau Katherine, die die Liedtexte zu „After Dawn“, „The Revelation“ und „Light of a Dream“ beigesteuert hat, ebenso wie Carolina, Sabrina, Damiano, Rob und Dennis haben von Beginn an großes Engagement für die Songs gezeigt und ihre jeweiligen Beiträge wundervoll umgesetzt.

Rocknews: Hat die Arbeit an „Redemption Part 1 – Twisted World“ euch als Band oder einzeln verändert?
Nein. Ziel: Die Story fertig stellen. Ich bin auf Kurs und da schon drei der 11 Songs des letzten Teils von Redemption-II fertig gestellt sind, kann ich jetzt schon sagen, dass sich da nichts Großes verändern wird.

Rocknews: Welche Emotionen möchtet ihr bei den Hörern auslösen, wenn sie das Album zum ersten Mal hören?
Ich wünsche mir, dass die Musik und die Geschichte begeistern und die Figuren emotional berühren. Am besten: Raum abdunkeln, entspannen, kleines Licht an und genießen. Zu Part 1 und 2 der Dispyria-Reihe gibt es passende Bücher und Hörbücher. Ich empfehle, alles  von Teil 1 bis Teil 4 in  Reihenfolge zu hören. Wer erst mit dem vierten Teil beginnt, kann das problemlos tun. Auf dispyria.com findet man die „Saga“ und alle Storylines zu den jeweiligen Teilen.

Rocknews: Wie setzt ihr das Konzept von „Twisted World“ auf der Bühne um?
Mit den verfügbaren finanziellen Mitteln und ganz ohne Budget für eine Bühnenshow ist Kreativität gefragt. Es wird eine Videowand geben, auf der zu jedem Song eigens animierte Figuren die Performance unterstützen.

Rocknews: Was können Fans in Zukunft von Dispyria erwarten?
Mehr Musik, mehr Story, noch mehr Emotionen, da die Story vor ihrem gewaltigen und emotionalen Abschluss stehen wird mit dem Erscheinen von „Redemption-Part 2“.

Rocknews: Ihr habt auf diesem Album einige Gastsänger-/Sängerinnen, wie kam es dazu?
Auf dem Album wirken zwei Sängerinnen und Sänger aus dem Live-Cast mit: Sabrina Roth, die bei „After Dawn (Intro)“ und „Nothing without you“ die Leadvocals übernimmt, und Dennis Ohler von Dragonsfire, der „Red Requiem“ singt. Zak Stevens lernte ich während der Corona-Pause kennen; meine Anfrage überzeugte ihn sowohl inhaltlich als auch musikalisch sofort, sodass er auf dem dritten Album „The Story of Marion Dust“ bei fünf Songs und nun bei drei Titeln von „Redemption – Part 1“ dabei ist. Auch Ralf Scheepers war auf dem vorherigen Album mit einem Song vertreten. Für dieses Album habe ich gezielt Sängerinnen und Sänger kontaktiert, deren Stimmen mich besonders beeindruckten. Carolina etwa verfügt über eine beeindruckende stimmliche Bandbreite – sie beherrscht von Pop bis Metal-Growling alles, was sie eindrucksvoll bei „David’s Nightmare“ zeigt. Rob Lundgren wiederum kenne ich durch meinen Kollegen Markus Pfeffer, der Rob bei seinem Projekt Mystery Moon engagiert hatte.

Rocknews: Wenn „Redemption Part 1“ ein Kapitel ist: Wie würdet ihr das nächste Kapitel beschreiben, bekommen wir einen Teil 2 und wie wird dieser klingen, gibt es hier schon mehr Infos?
Redemption – Part 2 löst die Geschichte um den Devon/Dust-Zirkel auf mit all seinen Verstrickungen und Windungen. Emotional wird es die bisher größte Achterbahnfahrt mit einigen tränenreichen Momenten. Also seid gespannt.

Rocknews: Was möchtet ihr den Hörern mit „Redemption Part 1 – Twisted World“ mit auf den Weg geben?

Rocknews: “Redemption Part 1 – Twisted World” sounds like the beginning of a bigger story. What does “redemption” mean to you personally and musically?
Thank you for your questions! DISPYRIA is not a traditional band, but rather a project I founded in 2012 after a difficult period in my life. The music accompanies an ongoing story that is central to the project and has helped me personally. Stylistically, I am guided by a wide variety of influences—without genre boundaries. Rocknews: If you had to explain “Twisted World” in a few words, what would you say?
Is it really a “twisted world”?

It is a metaphor for all the madness that is currently raging so intensely in the real world. Nothing seems calm, normal, or relaxed anymore. Everything seems to be hanging by a thread that is so taut that it can’t help but snap and drag everything down with it into the abyss. So even though it’s a dark fantasy story, it’s not so far removed from reality, at least emotionally.

Rocknews: Is there a common theme or story that runs through the album?
As already answered in the first question, the common thread begins with the first track on album number 1, “My Hell,” and ends for now with the track “Twisted World,” the last song on the album that will be released soon. The final resolution of the story about Josh Devon and Marion Dust (aka Aelyrea) and all their personalities appears in the last song of the last album of this cycle, “Redemption-II.” The plot is set, and I already know how it all ends.

Rocknews: How would you describe the sound of “Redemption Part 1 – Twisted World” compared to your previous releases?
Since the second album, “Dispyria—The Journey to Aelyrea,” Markus Teske has been in the producer’s chair. He also produces Vandenplas, among others. I would say that not much has changed. Lots of power, heavy sounds, and a little bit of orchestral. Just the Dispyria style.

Rocknews: Were there any musical influences (bands, genres) that particularly shaped this album?
That’s not an easy question to answer. People often say that I’m imitating Avantasia or Ayreon, but that’s not true. I like metal operas and orchestral rock, which is reflected in my music. Ultimately, my goal is to tell a story through my music. How others classify my style is up to them.

Rocknews: Were there any particular challenges or moments during production that stuck in your mind afterwards?
There are always moments of doubt and reflection about whether something is even possible. Nevertheless, the most important decision was probably to implement the visualization with generative AI. This finally allowed me to give the story a real face—people can now see how I imagine the characters and their interactions. Since I am designing the project completely on my own, both in terms of content and visuals, I was able to create an appealing visualization while keeping production costs relatively low.

Rocknews: Which song on the album is most important to you personally, or do you like best—and why?
Every song has meaning for me. “After Dawn” and “The Revelation” in particular give me emotional support—not so much because of Zak Stevens‘ vocals, but because they support me in terms of content and emotion.

Rocknews: How did the work on the new album go for you as a band? Was it a collaborative effort, or did you sometimes encounter differences of opinion among yourselves?
Since this is a solo project, the guest musicians and singers were given a certain amount of creative freedom. Zak Stevens and his wife Katherine, who contributed the lyrics to “After Dawn,” “The Revelation,” and “Light of a Dream,” as well as Carolina, Sabrina, Damiano, Rob, and Dennis showed great commitment to the songs from the very beginning and did a wonderful job with their respective contributions.

Rocknews: Has working on “Redemption Part 1 – Twisted World” changed you as a band or individually?
No. Goal: to finish the story. I’m on track, and since three of the 11 songs on the last part of Redemption II are already finished, I can already say that nothing major will change.

Rocknews: What emotions do you want to evoke in listeners when they hear the album for the first time?
I hope that the music and the story inspire them and that the characters touch them emotionally. Ideally, darken the room, relax, turn on a small light, and enjoy. There are accompanying books and audiobooks for parts 1 and 2 of the Dispyria series. I recommend listening to everything from part 1 to part 4 in order. Rocknews: How are you implementing the concept of “Twisted World” on stage?
With the financial resources available and no budget for a stage show, creativity is required. There will be a video wall on which specially animated characters will support the performance for each song.

Rocknews: What can fans expect from Dispyria in the future?
More music, more story, even more emotion, as the story approaches its powerful and emotional conclusion with the release of “Redemption Part 2.”

Rocknews: You have several guest singers on this album. How did that come about?
Two singers from the live cast appear on the album: Sabrina Roth, who takes the lead vocals on “After Dawn (Intro)” and “Nothing without you,” and Dennis Ohler from Dragonsfire, who sings “Red Requiem.” I met Zak Stevens during the coronavirus break; he was immediately convinced by my request, both in terms of content and music, so he is featured on five songs on the third album “The Story of Marion Dust” and now on three tracks on “Redemption – Part 1.” Ralf Scheepers was also featured on one song on the previous album. For this album, I specifically contacted singers whose voices particularly impressed me. Carolina, for example, has an impressive vocal range—she masters everything from pop to metal growling, which she impressively demonstrates on “David’s Nightmare.” I know Rob Lundgren through my colleague Markus Pfeffer, who hired Rob for his project Mystery Moon.

Rocknews: If “Redemption Part 1” is one chapter, how would you describe the next chapter? Will there be a Part 2, and what will it sound like? Is there any more information available yet?
Redemption – Part 2 resolves the story surrounding the Devon/Dust circle with all its twists and turns. Emotionally, it will be the biggest rollercoaster ride yet, with some tearful moments. So stay tuned.

Rocknews: What message would you like to convey to listeners with “Redemption Part 1 – Twisted World”?
