Üblicherweise vergeben wir für EPs selten Punkte. In diesem Falle tue ich es, weil ich meine, dass diese fünf Tracks genügend über die Qualität der Band aussagen und darüber, was wir zukünftig erwarten dürfen. Zudem ist es die zweite EP der 2014 gegründeten Band.
David Mende (Gesang, Bass), Gerrit Kuhl (Gitarre, Hintergrundgesang), Lukas Heimann (Gitarre, Hintergrundgesang) und Jonas „Jo“ Elsner (Schlagzeug, Hintergrundgesang), das sind DEAD MEMORY. Und sie beeindrucken zuerst einmal damit, dass ihre EP ein Konzeptalbum ist. Es geht inhaltlich um mentale Erkrankungen, die damit verbundenen Herausforderungen und die Hoffnung, dass diese besiegt oder zumindest in ihre Schranken gewiesen werden können. Insbesondere auch nach den zwei Jahren der Pandemie hat sich diese Thematik verschärft, ist also in einem negativen Sinn „aktuell“.
Was kriegen wir aber musikalisch? Knackigen Metalcore auf jeden Fall. In diesem Genre spielt der Gesang eine zentrale Rolle. Da wäre beispielsweise die Kombination von Screams und Growls oder die mehrstimmigen Sounds im Hintergrund. DEAD MEMORY haben sich für zweites entschieden. Und dafür, dass sie die Genregrenzen auch gleich wieder auflösen. So zeigt das Album diverse Rockattribute – wie etwa die prominent platzierten Gitarrensoli. Die üblichen Breakdowns finden Eingang in das Album, ebenso wie kraftvolle Sreams. Ansonsten brettern Bass und Drums, feuern die Jungs Riffgewitter ab und bieten gehörig Druck und Vorwärtsdrang. „Awake“ knallt!
Fazit
Mit DEAD MEMORY erhebt sich eine qualitativ hochstehende Band aus dem Ruhrgebiet, der die eine oder andere grosse Bühne zu gönnen ist. Vorerst könnt ihr die Band aber unterstützen, indem ihr die EP kauft und die Band live besucht – es lohnt sich!

Usually we rarely give points for EPs. In this case I do, because I think these five tracks say enough about the quality of the band and what we can expect in the future.
David Mende (vocals, bass), Gerrit Kuhl (guitar, background vocals), Lukas Heimann (guitar, background vocals) and Jonas „Jo“ Elsner (drums, background vocals), that’s DEAD MEMORY. And they impress first of all with the fact that their EP is a concept album. In terms of content, it’s about mental illnesses, the challenges associated with them and the hope that they can be defeated or at least put in their place. Especially after the two years of the pandemic, this topic has intensified, so it is „topical“ in a negative sense.
But what do we get musically? Crisp metalcore in any case. In this genre, vocals play a central role. For example, there is the combination of screams and growls or the polyphonic sounds in the background. DEAD MEMORY have chosen the latter. And for the fact that they also dissolve the genre boundaries right away. So the album shows various rock attributes – like the prominently placed guitar solos. The usual breakdowns find their way into the album, as well as powerful sreams. Apart from that, the bass and drums crash, the boys fire off a flurry of riffs and offer a lot of pressure and forward momentum. „Awake“ bangs!
Conclusion
With DEAD MEMORY a high quality band from the Ruhr area rises, who should be granted one or the other big stage. But for now, you can support the band by buying the EP and seeing them live – it’s worth it!
