DAVID REECE – „Baptized By Fire“ erscheint anfangs März

DAVID REECE – kommt mir irgendwie bekannt vor… Ach ja, der hat doch mal bei ACCEPT und BONFIRE das Mik bearbeitet. Und jetzt lässt er einen neuen Longplayer auf die Massen los.

Das gleich zum Einstieg; leider musste ich letzten Samstag dem ROCK4Future-Event in Bern den Vortritt geben, sonst hätte ich mir David Reece supergerne im Johnny’s Lion Cave angesehen und -gehört.David Reece hat meine Sympathie seit dem ersten Ton, den ich von ihm gehört habe. Das ist schon eine Weile her und gecacht hat er mich, weil seine Stimme zwar eigenständig ist, mich aber doch sehr an Biff Byford von SAXON erinnert – und das sind immerhin meine alltime-faves des klassischen Heavy Metal.
Für das neue Album hat sich Reece eine italienische Mannschaft geholt, welche aus Riccardo Demarosi – Bass, Niccolò Savinelli – Guitars und Giovanni Savinelli – Drums besteht. Das gleich vorneweg, hier hat er sich eine geile, technisch sehr versierte Band zusammengestellt.

Was aber bietet das Album? Zuerst einmal 12 Tracks mit einer Spielzeit von etwas unter einer Stunde. Die zwölf Tracks sind genretypisch, schöpfen die Bandbreite aber gut aus. Da wäre beispielsweise der Midtempokracher „Twilight Of The Gods“, oder das zu Beginn an MANOWAR erinnernde „Enemy is me“ – die Drumblasts nach circa zwei Minuten sind ziemlich geil. Zudem zeigt Reece hier, was er stimmlich leisten kann und Gitarrist Savinelly steigt gleich mit einem geilen Solo ein.

Bei insgesamt guten Alben – und ein solches ist „Baptized By Fire“ – fällt es mir oft schwer, einen Lieblingstrack zu definieren. In dieser Setlist ist es aber eindeutig, also zweideutig: „No Rest For The Wicked“ und „Seasons Of A Man“. Beide Songs haben unheimliche Power, gehören zu den absoluten Harteisen auf der Scheibe – und ja, sie erinner mich an geile SAXON-Tracks. Ich komme nicht von diesem Vergleich los, möchte aber der Band nicht unrecht tun. Nein, David Reece ist keine Kopie, sondern einfach ein genretechnisch enger Verwandter meiner Lieblings-NWOBHM-Band.

Fazit

Von „Baptized By Fire“ habe ich mir viel erwartet – David Reece ist schliesslich nicht einfach nur irgendein Rocksänger. Die Erwartungen haben sich erfüllt, die Scheibe ist etwas vom Besten, was mir dieses Jahr untergekommen ist. ein Dutzend richtig fette Metaltracks, geile Drumblasts, ein fetter, teils beinahe funkiger Bass, eine geniale Giterre und über allem eine charismatische, unverwechselbare Stimmt – grosses Kino! Kaufempfehlung? What else?

Let’s start right away; unfortunately I had to give way to the ROCK4Future event in Bern last Saturday, otherwise I would have loved to watch and listen to David Reece at Johnny’s Lion Cave.David Reece has had my sympathy since the first time I heard him. It’s been a while since then and he cached me because, although his voice is unique, it reminds me a lot of Biff Byford from SAXON – and those are my all-time faves of classic heavy metal.
For the new album, Reece has recruited an Italian team consisting of Riccardo Demarosi – bass, Niccolò Savinelli – guitars and Giovanni Savinelli – drums. First of all, he has put together a great, technically very accomplished band.

But what does the album offer? First of all, 12 tracks with a playing time of just under an hour. The twelve tracks are typical of the genre, but make good use of the bandwidth. There’s the mid-tempo cracker „Twilight Of The Gods“, for example, or „Enemy is me“, which is reminiscent of MANOWAR at the beginning – the drum blasts after about two minutes are pretty cool. Reece also shows what he can do vocally here and guitarist Savinelly gets right into it with a great solo.

With albums that are good overall – and „Baptized By Fire“ is one such album – I often find it difficult to define a favourite track. In this setlist, however, it is clear, i.e. ambiguous: „No Rest For The Wicked“ and „Seasons Of A Man“. Both songs have incredible power, are among the absolute heavies on the disc – and yes, they remind me of great SAXON tracks. I can’t get away from this comparison, but I don’t want to do the band an injustice. No, David Reece is not a copy, but simply a close relative of my favourite NWOBHM band in terms of genre.

Conclusion

I expected a lot from „Baptised By Fire“ – after all, David Reece is not just any old rock singer. The expectations have been fulfilled, the disc is one of the best I’ve come across this year. A dozen really fat metal tracks, great drum blasts, a fat, sometimes almost funky bass, a brilliant guitar and above all a charismatic, unmistakable voice – great cinema! Recommendation to buy? What else?
